eisler
Wouldn't it be cool if Billy Bragg and Wilco would ever do some shows where they played music from the Mermaid recordings.Wilco could get Jay back on guitar, which i'm sure will never happen.I know there was some tension towards the latter half of the recordings but im sure it settled by now. That would be my Wilco dream concert. What do you all think? cryptique
I'd love to see a Tweedy-Bragg show where they both played solo. Bragg's best when playing solo anyway (in my opinion).
groovingdan
I'd rather see Wilco without Bragg, doing the MA songs.

mfwahl
Given the fact that they don't really like each other, this probably wouldn't happen. I remember reading that in Learning How to Die they both did a festival after Mermaid (1 or 2?) and played different sets instead of playing together. And I love this Bragg quote directed toward Bennett about mixing the album:"you make your record, and I'll make mine, fucker."
gogo
Yeah, they played the Guinness Fleadh in San Jose in 1998. Each played a set of mostly Mermaid Avenue stuff, but they did not play together.
mpolak21
Bragg and Wilco have played together a couple of times on late night television. They did California Stars on Letterman and Conan, and Secret of the Sea on Letterman. These aren't up on Youtube, but they are on one of JHamm's DVD's. --Mike
bigshoulders
I was telling Isadorah just the other day that one of my favorite songs from the MA collaboration is "She Came Along to Me" which features Bragg on vox. Musically speaking, this is a brilliant song that although it doesn't feature Tweedy's voice, is a great song nonetheless. The non-Tweedy vox songs shouldn't be overlooked. After all, the collaboration wasn't lyrical, it was musical. cheers, kevin
you ever seen a ghost?
>I'd rather see Wilco without Bragg, doing the MA songs. exactly my sentiment! -justin
IRememberDBoon
How the hell do you play "I guess I planted a seed" without billy bragg?? I listened to that song like 20 times one day and at least 3 or 4 times a day for multiple months. I LOVE LOVE LOVE that song.

eisler
I'd rather see Wilco without Bragg, doing the MA songs. I'd settle for just seeing Wilco do them too.Jay would have to be there too.
froggie
Bragg did join them for Hoodoo Voodoo in 1998 once > How the hell do you play "I guess I planted a seed" without billy bragg?? the same way wilco and JP played Walt whitmans neice in 2000 they can easily play eachother's songs if they wanted
hh44
I was fortunate enough to see them in the summer of '98 in Seattle/Redmond, WA for the WOMAD Festival. It's certainly one of my top concerts of all time. Wilco opened for Bragg and played a mix of UT, AM, BT, and MA I. It was really raw and exciting. After Wilco exited and Bragg took the stage, however, Tweedy and Co. rushed the stage with Jay doubling with Ian McLagan on organ and Jeff on harmonica. They actually seemed like they were having a bit too much fun and Tweedy knocked a mike stand over. After that they were politely encouraged to leave the stage and afterwards Bragg commented, "Wilco and his crazy Wilcos." That's how I remember it anyways.
cryptique
the same way wilco and JP played Walt whitmans neice in 2000 they can easily play eachother's songs if they wantedBragg has played California Stars on occasion. Does a pretty respectable job of it, too.
froggie
it was funny when Mermaid avenue first came out here. thats when i first heard of wilco and became a fan. they were playing California stars all over the radio, and at the same time, calling it billy bragg's new album while wilco was shoved off as the backing band.... umm, billy bragg didnt sing California stars
LouieB
Yeah, they played the Guinness Fleadh in San Jose in 1998. Each played a set of mostly Mermaid Avenue stuff, but they did not play together. Some of the band, including Jeff, sang backup on a few MA songs at the Chicago Fleadh....I was there....not exactly a tour, but it sort of happened. LouieB
JerseyMike
I saw Wilco opening for Natalie Merchant where they played a lot of MA II. Its a shame they don't play more of those songs because "Secret of the Sea" and "Feed of Man" were incredible. I recentley saw Billy Bragg at a Woody Guthrie tribute concert and he played all MA songs: "Igrid Bergman", "Another Man Done Gone", "Way Over Yonder", "Against the Law" and "Black Wind Blowing". AFter that I would assume (big assumption here) that the obscure songs will then get played at other shows. LouieB
