ction
This is easily in my top 5 favorite Wilco songs, but enough with the seemingly endless "nothings" already.

Guest David Puddy
the best version, is on the Rockpalast DVD from 1999 Mr. Mendte, what is this dvd you speak of? and i agree, the endless "nothings" is amazing, but only in sparse use. it's been a bit over done. although it was a perfect in IATTBYH, just after they got dropped, and the cut to "i'd like to thank you all for nothing..." Analogman
I figure that is where he got it - I don't know what volume or whatever it is - I don't mess with the dvd stuff. It is probably not to hard to figure out.

Lammycat
nah, thr rough versions in 95 when the song wasnt finally finished. at first you dont know which verese will come, let alone the number of Nothings!1997-99 versions could get pretty out there, too. The one from the Fillmore sticks out in my mind, as does the one where JT seems a little cocked and the song has some pretty bizarre moments in it. I think the unpredictability of the tune on a given night was what made them so fun to hear. Easily in my top 5 of Wilco tunes, too.
Sweet Papa Crimbo
Mr. Mendte, what is this dvd you speak of? and i agree, the endless "nothings" is amazing, but only in sparse use. it's been a bit over done. although it was a perfect in IATTBYH, just after they got dropped, and the cut to "i'd like to thank you all for nothing..." I love the cacophony and subtle mood changes of MISUNDERSTOOD; however, I am always taken aback a bit by the vehemence of the repeated nothings: I'd like to thank you all for nothing (x 40?) at all. Not exactly an uplifting sentiment from an artist to his fans. What is Jeff saying here? Although he doesn't have the same (seeming) anger in these 'nothings' these days, it still stings. This song plus LET'S NOT GET CARRIED AWAY lead me to think at times that this sentiment may not always be tongue in cheek. I have never (to my recollection) heard or read Jeff expounding on where his head was when this song was written and where his head is now, but no love is crueler than unrequieted love. bwhite0421
i know it's bad form to double post but this thread makes me think of an incident that involves the grateful dead and their song 'wharf rat'. (no dirty hippie jokes, ok?) i once collected all of the taped versions that i could find and filled up 7 cd's with nothing but 'wharf rat'. some say i'm a little bit, uhhh, compulsive. i don't really get it, but......... it also is a good case for the internet live music archive. very easy to download just 1 song from a show. cheers, b
Guest Alan
does it really differ very much from version to version? i'm sure any version with this current line-up is pretty great.

Lammycat
does it really differ very much from version to version? i'm sure any version with this current line-up is pretty great. When stating it was the "best version" of course there are comparisons. They've been playing the tune live for 14 years or so. Even if just comparing the tune within the current line up (which has been together long enough to see the tune varied from tour-tour/year-year, even if slightly) a case can be made. Even if it's a slight case.
electro
1/9/2003, Jeff Tweedy solo at the Vic. First song of the encore, and the rest of Wilco makes a surprise appearance halfway through to finish the song (and the set). The crowd reaction is terrific.

adjason
I think this may be one ofthe few songs that I just like the regular old album version the best. or maybe 1997 in south carolina. jeff is not being tongue in cheek, at some level he is thakful for his success but also has to hold on to the punk ethos or it will go away. This is his attempt to do that.
