Well, I'm doing Lolla, but I'd almost rather be doing the RH>Wilco shows in Indy.

I'm doing both. :dancing

It'll be my first time at White River, and probably my last time at Verizon since they're supposed to tear it down for condos after this season (or that's the last I heard anyway).

Aman that's the last time I ever send you pics from our family album.

I'm seeing both RH and Wilco - with my wife the first night, not sure yet about the second. I still haven't successfully transformed her into a Wilco fan. I got reserved row G tickets through the presale which at least partly makes up for getting terrible Ticketmaster tickets to the Radiohead show.

What's this place like? Is the GA area any good? I'm thinking about snagging some duckats off of Ticketbastard, but I don't want to get tied into the small fortune that gas & lodging will cost if the place is huge and the GA stinks or is otherwise sub-par.

Here's some opinions of other Hoosiers who have been there (some not so recently since changes have been made) and most of whom have been to Deer Creek, now known as Verizon Wireless - the large outdoor amphitheater shed-type venue that's been around forever north of Indianapolis.

I recommend you look at the layout of the place on a seating chart, because the GA lawn tickets actually can get you sort of close compared to other large places where the lawn is way the heck back.

Wilco is playing there Aug 4 (day after Radiohead!) I have never been there so I'm trying to find out what it's like.

I have heard it isn't the greatest venue. But a lot of what I hear is conflicting, even when I call the box office. So here are some points I am curious about. What has been your experience there?

* No protection from the sun or rain.

* The sun is in your eyes late in the day.

* You can only buy 1 drink per person at the concession stand each time you visit.

* Porta potties or real bathrooms?

* Reserved seats? or box seats for season ticket holders only? or all GA lawn chairs?

Thanks for any input!

Re: What is Indy's White River like as a venue? It sucks, pretty much. Its a big grassy hill with a a stage at the bottom, and it's right on the river, which have led to biblical swarms of gnats or the like that made the experience miserable.

I believe they do have real bathrooms, though. The park is adjacent to the Zoo, and theres a building that the concessions are in and I think I remember the bathrooms being there.

There's no way they could assign seating, as it's a big grassy field, unless they rope off an area. They just opened the gates and handed people folding chairs and sent you on your way.

Personally, I love it as a venue. I've been waiting for someone worth a damn to play there again so I can go back.

I didn't have any experience with the gnats or any other bugs, though.

If I remember correctly, the stage shields the sun late in the evening, around showtime.

I didn't drink, so I'm not sure about the limits in place @ the concession stand.

They had porta-potties when I was there...that may have changed considering this was 2 summers ago.

All General Admission w/free lawn chairs.*

*Again...this may have changed since I was there.

I agree with _____ ... I dug the place.

I much prefer it to Deer Creek, mostly because of size (smaller) and location (downtown!!). I think the last couple years it has transitioned from temporary facility to permanent, which should bring more amenities (should you need that).

Ditto that.

I liked the venue

There were only port-a-potties

No bug problems

The complimentary low-rider lawn chairs were nice

Food was expensive

I only bought one beer at a time. The beer was expensive and I slammed some in the park out front where they were letting hippies smoke pot and drink beer in plain sight.

We parked far away & paid for parking in the Eiteljorg garage

I like it much, much better than Deer Creek

Here's a link with a great picture of the venue:

http://www.livenation.com/venue/getVenue/venueId/2615

To quickly answer some of the questions I saw on this thread:

The sound has been very good for every show I've seen there (around 10).

Only 30 rows of seats so the lawn is not too far away from the stage.

No pavilion. So even up front, if it's raining, you're wet.

The setting sun can be an issue... bring shades.

No permanent facilities (unless they are new this year). It's port-o-let city.

Caution: If you are in the first few rows, I hope you are near the center. The seats on the ends of the first few rows have horribly obstructed views and you will be pissed. As you can see in the picture, the front few rows extend WAY beyond the edges of the stage. If you are there, you will only be able to see the front part of the opposite side of the stage.

Overall, I like the venue about as much as I can like an outdoor venue except for the seating issue above. There's no way you should score front row seats and not be able to see most of the stage.

I've stayed at the Marriott and the Westin downtown Indy. Pretty nice, I thought. No complaints. I think I did hotwire.com and got a decent rate. The Marriott was very nice IMO. Nice clean high-rise room, really great bed linens, you know, with the fresh sheets over the poofy comforter thing. :)

I would stay away from the downtown Embassy Suites, that wasn't so great quite a few years back. I guess it could be different now, but ... ?

I stayed at the Crowne Plaza next to the train station last month when I was in town to see the N.C. Singers. I got a good price on it via Hotwire (I think $56 or something ridiculously low like that), and it was fairly nice. Don't stay there if you're a light sleeper, though--trains run beneath the hotel. They didn't wake me, but one went by when I was still awake and my room shook a little.
