GtrPlyr
I hadn't looked through the book (Listen to This!) in ages, but was glancing through it the other day and thought the chapter on Jeff might be of interest for some. http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d76/GtrP...stentoThis6.jpghttp://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d76/GtrP...stentoThis7.jpghttp://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d76/GtrP...stentoThis8.jpg
myboyblue
When Jeff's wife owned a club on the northside of Chicago, he used to occasionally DJ there to bring folks in on a Monday night or something. He had pretty stellar music taste and used to bring in a stack of LPs. Minor Threat and the Clash definitely come to mind.
uncool2pillow
Ha. Just an hour or so before I read this, I added a signature to my VC profile that's a Tweedy quote about the 'mats.
mpolak21
That's a great list and I am proud to say I have almost all of those albums (not the boxsets). Thanks for sharing. --Mike
Lukestar
Ha. Just an hour or so before I read this, I added a signature to my VC profile that's a Tweedy quote about the 'mats. Someone mentioned that quote in a thread on a Westerberg board recently. I had said how much I thought that the way the Replacements closed out Rock Around The Clock (on the new bonus ed. of Stink) sounded like the way WIlco closed out Dreamer in my Dreams. It made me wonder if Tweedy or one of them had ever heard a boot of that 'mats song and it crept in (not so?)sub-consciously. The person who replied cited that quote. It really does. I hadn't heard it before I bought this re-issue and when I did hear it, I did an aural double-take. Man I love that band.

It was just before he covered "Color Me Impressed".... well.
Lukestar
Yer quick. I went and checked the PW board and the poster got it right, I have smog in my brain. I also was thinking of the wrong bonus track. I edited above, couldn't find the strike through (wish I had smarts).
uncool2pillow
It was Tweedy at the Riviera in 97. It was just before he covered "Color Me Impressed".... well.Based on the recording I have, I figured it was at the Fillmore. "Color me Impressed" is immediately followed up by "I Wanna be Sedated". There were two setlists that show them being played consecutively and they were 5/9 and 5/10 of '97. Of course, he could've said it more than once. It was true up until ST. HungryHippo
thanks for posting this, it made for a nice read. now I think Wilco should cover 'Yea! Heavy and a Bottle of Bread.'
Golden Smoghead
Agree, this was a very cool read. It kinda reminds me of what the Old Crow Medicine Show guys say at the end of their ACL show: "when we were in high school, we mostly listened to what was on the radio, Nirvana and stuff like that." WaronWar
London Calling and Sweetheart of the Rodeo. This explains everything. I will have to give Nick Drake a listen. Yeah, Drake is excellent. His music is very hauntingly beautiful. And thanks for sharing the article. I always love to find out what artists I like listen to because it's a great way to find new stuff. GtrPlyr
I'm not a big Pink Moon fan, Five leaves Left is where its at for meI don't think you can go wrong with either one, or Bryter Layter for that matter. I picked up the Fruit Tree box set back in the 90s; that was the perfect introduction to Drake's music .

I'd always thought that about "Hootenany" from that LP (sorry I can't call it a cd since i bought all of their stuff originally on album lol) I haven't gotten the new Mats reissues yet (bad me!), but I am a long time fan. Is it similar to the end of Hootenany then?
rsjbraz
I remember Jeff did a feature in Uncut a couple of years back saying John Cale's Paris 1919 was his favorite album, I'll try and dig up the article.

Is it similar to the end of Hootenany then? Rock Around the Clock has about 3 false endings, really sloppy endings that re-start after somebody plays another note or two. And they play one of those re-starts much slower than they did throughout the song proper. Very, very similar to how Dreamer ends. All the Replacements re-issues are great and have some really cool bonus tracks. Greart packaging and liner notes. The Sire releases are supposedly scheduled to come out this Sept. roby
I don't know if Jeff is a music fanatic as me, but we two have almost the same albums and the same taste, really. His mind could recognize all those different kind of music (seldom light years far from one to another: Stax soul, Nick Drake, Replacements) and choose the good inside of it.It would be curious know if he follows some modern indie artists, there are many out there and I am sure he could loves some like Martin Craft, Songdog, The Shins, The National, John Vanderslice.Surely he knows one of may favourite: Andrew Bird, one of the finest musicians around. To those who like some folk music, I would suggest a great CD: Rachel Unthank & the Winterset - The Bairns (2007 on EMI): a without time great album. Now I'm in love with the Martin Craft's Silver and fire CD, the debut album by a great songwriter, I am sure he will be famous one day. ..sorry for my rusty english...Bye all!
