stooka
Several references to DL lately. So many interesting scenes and characters to choose from when you look at his entire work, but I especially liked Mulholland Drive. His use of symbolism can make for an incredibly vague storyline, leaving the viewer to fill in some missing pieces. Eraserhead is downright disturbing, not to mention Blue Velvet. However, films like The Elephant Man and The Straight Story have more clarity and lack the uncomfortable smackdown he typically induces on the viewer. I've seen the majority of this list and think he is a brilliant director. 2006 INLAND EMPIRE 2002 THE SHORT FILMS 2001 MULHOLLAND DRIVE 1999 THE STRAIGHT STORY 1997 LOST HIGHWAY 1993 HOTEL ROOM - TV 1992 AMERICAN CRONICLES - TV 1992 TWIN PEAKS - FIRE WALK WITH ME 1991 INDUSTRIAL SYMPHONY #1: The Dream of the Broken Hearted - ON THE AIR - TV 1990 TWIN PEAKS - TV 1990 WILD AT HEART 1986 BLUE VELVET 1984 DUNE 1980 THE ELEPHANT MAN 1977 ERASERHEAD 1970 THE GRANDMOTHER 1968 THE ALPHABET 1967 SIX FIGURES
lost highway
I've seen a little more than half of his work for the big screen. The enjoyment of Lynch for me has always hinged on considering that he might be 'fucking with you'. That sometimes he's not being pretentious, he's being absurdist. Laughing behind the curtain so to speak. I've never been able to enjoy anything of his nearly as much as Blue Velvet and Wild at Heart, but I found Mulholland Drive to be worth watching more than once. Inland Empire didn't really work out for me at all. He kind of tests how far you're willing to go.
OOO
There really should be a "Both" option...but I went with genius.

owl
Most of the first season of Twin Peaks is awesome. Blue Velvet is kind of bad (but mainly because of Dennis Hopper). So is Mulholland Dr. I'm ambivalent on Lost Highway. Dune, well, it's Dune. I've heard people call him one of America's greatest directors. I'm not so sure about that. I voted "other." lost highway
Oh yeah, and my member name is leaning a little harder towards Williams, than Lynch. But have your pick: hard luck country traveler, or metamorphisizing, noir, porno industry, guy on the phone is also looking at you and not talking yet you hear him talking to you on his phone what he lends you to....... you see where this goes. Take your pick.

theologian
David Lynch is my favorite film maker. I think the thing with him is that in some cases, you just need to watch his films not "expecting" to see a movie. Blue Velvet is still one of my favoritesand M Drive I think is awesome in how each scene is a complete piece of art within itself Twin Peaks is still the greatest tv show ever...even when it lost its vigor. EL the Famous
i absolutely love 'blue velvet' as well, but i'm on the fence whether it qualifies as genius. and it may actually be a bad movie, but i love a lot of bad movies.
