RaspberryJam
I lived a few streets over from John Kerry when I live in Boston--trust me-I lived on the cheap side of the hill, he didn't- and I used to see him around the neighborhood from time to time. He was always very nice and considerate, a pretty pleasant guy. I'd see him picking up pizza with his son at Figs.

When I was in Grad school, there was a seminar that dealt with the merits of public service by people who either were scions of the wealthy or were wealthy themselves. In a crass sense, it can be argued that it is harder to bribe a wealthy man than it is a poor man. I fall more into the line of thinking that to those whom much has been given, much is expected. Those on the list who earned their money by 'the sweat of their brow' (so to speak) and are in public service to give back to their country should be lauded, not looked on with suspicion. But I'm sure there will be the usual dogmatic arguements in this thread. Looking for the usual clusterfuck that arises when politics and money are discussed.
WilcoFan
How come they count Kerry's wife's money but they don't count McCain's wife's money?
Guest Jules
How come they count Kerry's wife's money but they don't count McCain's wife's money?I don't know. McCain's wife had it before she married him. Could that be it?
austrya
Maybe the McCain's keep separate finances and the Kerry's don't?
Doug C
I care far more about an elected official's character than their wealth. I haven't seen correlational studies on those two pieces of data to know if scientifically one tends to predict the other.
Edie
The McCains file separately. That might be it. FYI -- Teresa Heinz had it before she married Kerry as well.
MrRain422
It doesn't include Kerry's wife's with his. For both Kerry and McCain, items owned in the name of the spouse or children are listed only at "$1 Million or more" on their official list of assets, so the actual amount is likely much higher for both of them (and I assume for several other people on the list). I'm not necessarily suspicious of wealth, but I think it's good to know who is paying our representatives in government.

Spawn's dad
I was also always under the impression that rich people sucked, so wouldn't the richest atheists (who are also using or causing the use of the most natural resources) suck even more? Making the poster boys for atheism pretty darn evil?

myboyblue
that's quite a stretch, isn't it? there are rewards for generosity right here on earth while one is alive, whether or not one is an atheist or agnostic. Maybe this tells us more about JNick's philanthropy or lack thereof.

Spawn's dad
dude, do you really think you grasp what Mother Terresa's thought process is? You won't accept another's belief in god, but you'll buy into mind reading, eh?
