remphish1
I love going on a long ride and exploring new places. What are some of your favorite drives you have been on? Some of my all time favorites.. 1. San Francisco-Portland, Oregon- Driving along the coast is amazing and the scenery was really interesting! 2. Denver-Santa Fe- Although I was not driving I will get an opportunity to do it again this year! Colorado is one of my favrote states and the Mountains are breathtaking! New Mexico also provides unique beauty and some of the best food I have ever ate on a road trip 3. The State of Alaska- I drove 1400 miles in 5 days in Alaska. Every single mile was unique! Highly recommend doing this some day. I drove from Anchorage to Seward back to Anchorage then to Fairbanks via Delta Junction/Fort Greeley, then up Past the Artic Circle back to Anchorage via Denali! 4. New Orleans-NYC- Even though my friend and I had car trouble and were stuck in Kentucky for 24 hours it was a beautiful roadtrip with alot of fun roadside stops and great food! 5. NYC-San Fran- I was 14 and it was with a camp group. We did 7000 Miles in 40 days. I enjoyed most of it but became sick of camping. Good news was I lost a lot of weight that summer and saw some truly awesome sites. Some of my favorite stops were Mitchell South Dakota (Corn Palace...ha!), Lake Powell Arizona, Moab Utah, Bryce/Zion, Vegas, San Diego, Yosemite! PS I was inspired to write this thread as I am planning a road trip to the Alantic Providences in the late spring. I estimate that the trip will be 3000 miles round trip. Hopefully not too ambitious for 10 days! I also am planing a milestone raod trip in the Summer to North Dakota....yeah thats right North Dakota!!! Me and a bunch of friends are going to join me as I cross into my 50th state. My goal is to do this before I am 30. I have found a few people to join me (My friends are as nuts as I am). We are going to fly into Minneapolis for a few days, go to Fargo for the night, then up to Winnipeg (Trying to go to all the Canadian Provinces too someday!) and then back! cryptique
I was on some awesome road trips as a kid, but as an adult my trips have been much less ambitious. For one thing, I don't have summers off. My parents were both teachers and thought nothing of taking us on the road for a month or more. We tent-camped on all of these trips, except when staying with relatives/friends. 1976: Michigan to San Francisco, by way of South Dakota (the Badlands, Corn Palace, etc.), Wyoming (Yellowstone, Grand Tetons), Utah (visited relatives in SLC) and Nevada (relatives in Reno). Returned through Colorado (Rocky Mountains, visited relatives in Denver). Included visit to Yosemite. Stayed with uncle in Berkeley. 1978: Michigan to Nova Scotia -- through Ontario, crossed at Niagara Falls, through upstate New York/Vermont/New Hampshire/Maine (Acadia National Park), ferry from Bar Harbor to Yarmouth, then all around Nova Scotia (incl. Cape Breton Highlands, Bay of Fundy), Prince Edward Island, then back through New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario. 1979: Michigan to San Francisco, by way of Montana (Glacier National Park), Seattle (visited my dad's college roommate), Olympic National Park, then down the coast (Oregon & northern California, including Crater Lake and Lassen Volcanic National Parks). Another trip to Yosemite. Stayed with uncle in Berkeley (again). 1984: Michigan to San Francisco, by way of Colorado (Mesa Verde N.P.), Four Corners, Arizona (Grand Canyon), southern Utah (Bryce Canyon & Zion N.P.s), Las Vegas, Los Angeles (stayed with a relative), then up the coast to San Francisco. Stayed with uncle in Berkeley (yet again). My maternal grandparents retired to Fairhope, Alabama, so we'd do these wild 17-hour car trips (each way) every year at Christmas or Easter to go visit. As an adult, my road trips haven't gotten much more exciting than Michigan to D.C., or to Florida (Gainesville), usually done as quickly as possible so we could reach our destination. NightOfJoy
I quit my job in the summer of 94 to go on a 40 day jaunt out West with the girlfriend (now wife). Put 7000 miles on her Honda while visiting a whole bunch of national parks, the Rainbow Gathering and family. Tent camped almost the entire time. One the best times of my life. OOO
I don't know if this counts as a road trip, but I took the Empire Builder from Seattle, WA to Chicago, IL and stopped for a week in Glacier National Park. If you like trains at all, thats pretty fun. I also did Chicago to Los Angeles via Route 66 (although half the time we took the interstates near Route 66) and then Los Angeles to Chicago via San Francisco, Salt Lake City, and Mount Rushmore. Iowa to Montana for Skiing about a million times. These were great going 95 in a mini van across South Dakota, and Montana.Iowa to Virgina if only my brother went to school closer. moxiebean
Late Dec. - Jan. 1987: Baltimore to Charleston WV (picked up roommate), to northern Georgia to visit Howard Finster, to Atlanta for new year's eve (saw Fetchin' Bones & HR Band), to New Orleans (great food & jazz, good weather), up the Mississippi to Memphis (Graceland, or course), across to Lynchburg (Jack Daniels Distillery), and back to Charleston/Baltimore. Took lots of pictures (especially H. Finster & New Orleans cemeteries), visited a bunch of civil war battlefields, and had a great time. Can't believe that was over 20 years ago... Lammycat
Fall '88: Roanoke, VA-> St. Petersburg, FLA.-> New Orleans-> Houston, TX.-> Dallas, TX-> back to Roanoke, VA. All for GD shows but the travel mates were the best part: Two great friends (one now passed away) and a chick I ended up dating for 5+ years as a result of the trip. Great memories. Lots of laughter. Great music both at the shows and on the road. And got to chat over a few drinks with Brent Mydland after the NO show. I also have fond memories of my trip from NY to Boulder, CO in 1995. It was just me but it was a life-altering and great trip.
Three dollars and 63 cents
I did a lot of traveling this summer, most of it solo. My favorite trip was in July, when I traveled to see Nels play a string of shows with the Singers. I drove from my home in Ithaca, NY, out to Belleville, IL, passing through most of New York, the northwest tip of Pennsylvania (just about the only part of my home state I'd never seen), Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois en route. I went with poppydawn and Mr. B'n'B to Columbia, MO, on day three of the trip, then took poppy with me to Nashville the next day, passing through Kentucky for the first time on the way. On day five I traveled solo across Tennessee to Knoxville, then on day six drove through mountains and Cherokee National Forest to Asheville, NC. It was probably the prettiest two hours of driving I've ever done. I closed the trip with a 12-hour jaunt north through North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New York to get home. Here's a picture I took while I was driving through the forest:
alison the wilca
i once went on a road trip from san diego to LA to san diego to las vegas to denver to st louis to chicago to louisville to ann arbor to cleveland to new york to philadelphia to asheville to memphis to carbondale to chicago to flagstaff to la to san diego. that was pretty fun. I think i got some of those places out of order. i've been dying to take another road trip but i don't think it will happen this year. there is something about being young and unencumbered that makes a road trip so much easier and more exciting. explodo
there is something about being young and unencumbered that makes a road trip so much easier and more exciting.Indeed. I still consider myself relatively young and it has been years since I've made it past a neighboring state in a car. Depressing. I'm getting to Santa Fe within the year, though. I'll make that my resolution. As for my favorites: : A trip to the Black Hills in South Dakota where I blew my transmission and got stranded for a week during Sturgis.: A couple of trips to the Smokey Mountains, North Carolina coast, and West Virginia that I still can't shake. poppydawn
Most of my road trips in recent years have been rather brief. Like the trip with $3.63 last summer, which was a blast! I'm much better at the whirlwind, last-minute trips than the marathon cross-country hauls. When we were dating, my husband and made a few road trip from St. Louis to Michigan's Upper Peninsula through Chicago and Wisconsin. Lots of good memories from those trips. We drove everywhere when I was a kid. In 1981 I rode in our pickup truck's camper shell from western Missouri to Orlando and back. It had one of those sliding windows so my parents could communicate with me. I was eight at the time and felt like I had my own traveling apartment. Awesome! When I was 14, I got to bring my best friend on the family trip - Missouri through Oklahoma to Albuquerque. We planned to go to Santa Fe after a few days, but there was a big prison break in the area. We were camping, and campers were being advised to stay away from Santa Fe. So we headed west and wound up going to the Grand Canyon, up through southern Utah, and across Colorado on the way home. I've made the drive/ride from Missouri to Colorado more times than I can recall. When I was 17 my mom decided we were going to fly to the cheapest place possible - St. Louis to Detroit. She wanted to be on my first flight. From Detroit we rented a car, chose a direction (east), drove across Ontario to Watertown, NY, and spent a week wandering around upstate New York and Vermont before rushing back to Detroit to fly home. We got our GPS unit today, and I've spent the evening playing with it. Now I want to hit the road!
