I've always been very interested in the way people percieve Manny, and this seems like the general consensus amongst fans (along with your "manny is an idiot post".)

However, really what has he done to earn this? "Gave up" on the Red Sox (to the tune of like a .450 OBP in his final month with them, I wish all players gave up like that)? Took a leak in the monster?

Seriously, I'm honestly curious why you think he is dumb and a douchebag. From all accounts from teammates he works as hard as anyone before the game, he just likes to have fun during the game (sacreligious to 'purists') and he's kind of aloof in interviews. I don't get the incindieary feels towars him.

Also, as with all steroid related cases, I don't care too much. Hey, an elite player took steroids (probably). Oh no!

I've always disliked they way he walks out of the batter's box, watching the ball fly, before he trots around the bases.

That is an excellent article. Sums up a lot of my feelings pretty well.

I'm surprised at how good it was. I like Bill Simmons when he doesn't drop a movie reference every other line.

Anyone who's got the balls to do that after hitting a home run in the playoffs is awesome.

But then again, I'm probably the furthest thing from a purist ever.

Ballsy? Sure, but its pretty dickish. I'm surprised more pitchers don't try to hit him after that shit. Of course, they're probably terrified of him. Having said all that, I always liked watching him play. Just that one thing always made my ass twitch.

Well, Manny did push the Red Sox 60+ year-old traveling secretary to the ground for no good reason.

But I think for the most part, he's just a fun-loving guy who works pretty damn hard when he wants to, but doesn't always want to. Which is perfectly normal, but I think it's understandable that people hold him to a higher standard, since he's one of the most highly paid players in MLB people on Earth. Dude gets paid $18M a year, you want to see him hustle his ass down the line.

I think it's dickish when most guys do it, but he plays the game in sucha joyous way that I really think he's just doing it for laughs.

If he would ever say why he does that, and if that is the answer, I'd respect that.

IIRC, Manny pulls that arms-in-the-air-watching-the-ball-sail-away shit only when the homerun means he's either brought his team within striking distance, tied the game or given his team the lead - which makes me think his mentality in the moment is "Holy shit I'm awesome man look what I just did everybody! You're happy because of me right now!" And I can dig it.

And IIRC, that particular picture is of a game winning, walk-off home run he hit against the Angels in Game 2 of the 2007 ALDS.

I believe it was game 1 of that series. They won 9-3.

While watching Sportscenter on this yesterday, I came to the realization that this is probably one of the better karma moments in history. I've always disliked Manny in a big way. His lack of hustle and disruptive nature to the clubhouse is exactly what I hate in major leage/professional sports. He was without a doubt a great player but this will obviously put a large " * " next to his name.

Not only does this indicate steroid usage, it does it in such an embarassing way. Hell, he can't even dispute it. Taking a prescription for a medical condition?

They won Game 1 4-0, Game 2 6-3 (on Manny's home run shown in that picture), and Game 3 9-1.

And while I don't have a problem with that particular celebration I do think it was the start of Manny's both-arms-raised celebration for even routine home runs.
