remphish1
http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/04/16/obama.rail/index.html I love Europe's trainsportation system and dependence on trains...I believe this is a great model to strive for. I am all for this! Every train I have rode in Europe is fast and reliable and was relatively reasonable.

remphish1
I'll stick with my car, thanks. Can your car go 150 MPH!? Can I get a ride? I love my car too, but this is a great alternative.....Also Amtrak currently is awful, expensive and slow...
PigSooie
This is going to take a while to complete, I'm guessing.
dondoboy
If it can be made affordable this is a fantastic idea. The Amtrak runs through here, but its as expensive as a plane.

buffy3kins
If it can be made affordable this is a fantastic idea. The Amtrak runs through here, but its as expensive as a plane.Amtrak doesn't go thru' Wichita where I live. It does go about 30 miles north of me. Getting there is a problem. Improving and maintaining our rail system better should be a top priority. Many cities such as Wichita need to improve their bus systems, too, with routes that make sense so people would use it more often. All of our mass transit systems need improvements. Obama has the right idea with it.
Analogman
I think Al Gore had some ideas about this back in the day. I wish we had such a thing - not so much the Amtrak model, but more like what the Japanese have. I was just talking with someone the other night about this sort of thing. We were also discussing how it would be good if the trolley was still running here where I live. We have 28,000 extra people with cars, and streets that were never made for cars to park on and/or drive around on. It is also somewhat difficult to get in and out of here - unless you have a car, and don't mind spending hours on the Interstate.

Analogman
Particularly during football season, the congestion is terrible. --Mike Exactly. It gets worse every year. We no longer have Greyhound bus service here, and no Amtrak service for that matter. It's either drive, or catch a ride from the airport to Pittsburgh. And I am not even sure they are offering a flight to Pittsburgh anymore. When I go to NY, I ride a city ran bus to the airport in Pittsburgh. It has worked pretty good - so far. OOO
Isn't there a high speed rail line that was approved by voters in CA going up between The Bay Area and Orange County? Yes on cool trains - No on gay marriage, if I recall correctly.

explodo
The city of Chicago, Illinois, would be the hub of the proposed Midwest Regional Rail System, which would stretch to Madison, Wisconsin, in the Northwest; St. Louis, Missouri, in the South; and Detroit, Michigan, in the East. These regional networks have been my answer to the "but America is too big" claim for years. This better actually get done. And while they're at it, they might as well throw Minneapolis, Omaha, Kansas City, and Indianapolis into that Midwest system.

calvino
It would do me a great service if they added Memphis. I don't see why they couldn't go all the way to New Orleans, eventually. There is a route from Chicago to there already.

austrya
Michigan got some stimulus money to develop a line from Ann Arbor to Detroit. I really hope this happens. It would be nice for me to drive the 1/2 hour to Ann Arbor and hop on the train to go to a ball game or a concert as opposed to driving an hour one way and paying $20 to park and praying that my car doesn't get stolen.
