Wilco Knoxville 2009-04-18

My god what a show, the second encore was straight up rock n roll:

California Stars

Red Eyed and Blue

I Got You

Outtasite (Outta Mind)

Casino Queen

Hoodoo Voodoo

I'm not exactly sure on the order of the rest of the set but they played Kamera and Box Full of Letters, two of my favorite songs. This was easily the best wilco show I have ever been too.

!!!

outtasite (outta mind) AND outta mind (outtasite) ~ that was awesome. Lovin' the (almost) perfect blend of songs from every album. Was hoping for a new song though.... But I really can't complain!

What a great show. Fantastic set! Loved the crowd too! Next best thing to a Chicago crowd that I've seen in the south lately :cheekkiss

Athens, here I come!

OH ~ and totally wasn't expecting the opening band!! VERY pleasant surprise, I'm glad I didn't skip it like I had intended to!

You must come from a Russian circus background or you were very drunk when you saw a Hawk and a Hacksaw. That music is damn near intolerable when they don't let the violinist show her skills. The vocals...MY GOD THE VOCALS! I could only listen to this when consuming alcohol.

Yeah, I enjoyed the opening band quite a bit.

And Wilco was, of course, unbelievable. At Leat That's What You Said was the definite highlight for me.

As a side note, and Jeff's banter with "Beardie" was pretty classic.

Loved the show, it was redemption for the slop three years ago. Thought it was over for sure and they surprised me with hoodoo voodoo for the finale. The fact that they didn't play any new songs is interesting since they played a few last fall. Great! Great! Great!

That may be the best Wilco show I've ever seen, too. It's definitely the best mood I've ever seen Jeff in. Nels seemed a little subdued though. But wow - it seemed like they played 30 songs. The main set seemed a lot longer than usual, but maybe it was just me.

Anyone happen to keep track of the set list? This is out of order, but I know we had Misunderstood, Outtamind (Outtasight), Outtasite (Outtamind), California Stars, Red Eyed and Blue, I Got You, Casino Queen, Hoodoo Voodoo, Kamera, Box Full of Letters, Impossible Germany, I'm the Man Who Loves you, Shot in the Arm, IATTBYH, You Are My Face, Hate it Here, Hummingbird, Company in My Back, Ashes of American Flags, Jesus Etc., Forget the Flowers, Late Greats, Heavy Metal Drummer, Walken, At Least That's What You Said, Shouldn't Be Ashamed... am I missing anything?

He was his normal gyrating self until he busted his ass. I hope someone got a picture of that.

I didn't catch that...which song?

It was a great show with a solid setlist. I really like when they aren't pushing a new album so all albums are represented equally (although Summerteeth could've been represented a bit better).

I don't really agree on the crowd comment. I thought they it was kind of lame. I was stuck in the balcony and there was *no one* standing (maybe a dozen or 2). People were yelling things out at my girlfriend and I when we were standing and about midway through the set they got the usher to come over and try to get us to sit. Then a song later they sent security over. He was really cool and admitted that it was total BS and we ended up working it out but my girlfriend and I got shuffled around to a few different areas which ruined a few songs. Now, i understand if it is a GA show and you choose to sit in the balcony, or if it's an acoustic performance, but you can't expect people to sit down at a rock show...especially when the whole floor is standing and rocking out. I just couldn't believe that they would sit through half the set behind us without standing up....how hard is it!?! Oh well, after the finally got our seats and we ended up in theirs (in the last row!) they left before the end of the show.

Still didn't ruin one of the better Wilco shows that I've seen.

Oh, and I agree about Jeff's mood. It took him a while to get going, but 1/2 to 2/3 through the set, he started chatting it up b/w every song. Lots of classic Tweedy banter.

Just to play devil's advocate, "no parking on the dance floor". What you have is 40% of the audience stading motionless in front of 59% of the audience that would rather sit and actually SEE the musicians, all watching 1% attempting to dance. Dancing is cool, standing blows. No one stood until the encore at the Ryman last year, and that is the best Wilco show that I have seen (apparently a good enough performance for inclusion in the new DVD). I used to be right there with you (when I would actually dance), but I see it a different way now. You've got your right, though.

Other than that, it was a great show (never seen a bad Wilco concert). I'm spoiled listening to the Riviera residency recordings. Somehow envisioned a three hour marathon w/ horns. How about that Tennessee Theatre? We are very proud of our "Grand Entertainment Palace".

I was there, and as great of a show as it was, the fact that no one was standing in the balcony sucked. Everyone in the floor was having much more fan. That said, I've come to accept that shows in theaters like that, the floor stands, balcony sits. That's just the way it is.

Yesterday was just a great day. It started at Disc Exchange for a meet and greet with the band and getting them to sign their new DVD. Pretty crazy that there were not more people there. But more for us. Everyone was very gracious and it was nice to meet them for the first time.

For the show we had second row pit tickets DFC and I must say it was one special night of music featuring Wilco. We were treated to an amazing setlist and great conversation back and forth between Tweedy and our crew. Some highlights were Tweedy casually walking over to our buddy Scott and massaging his beard and then later saying that he wanted to get a tattoo of him on his body. Me screaming that the sombrero was unfair in the sausage race at Brewers and he agreeing. We really had a bunch of energy in the pit and Tweedy was responding with good banter back and forth. I did turn around several times and see the lot of the balcony sitting. I am not sure how they made you sit but that is not allowed as far as I can say. No one can make you sit down, those are your seats and there are no rules about standing up. Also, the intro to ITMWLY with Glen raising his arms and then Tweedy making him do it again and the whole band got up on their amps and jumped off to kick off the song.

I also wanted to comment on the Hoodoo Voodoo that was my first time hearing it as a kind of bluegrass style intro (may not be new but for me it was) by Nels and then watching he and Pat just trade licks back and forth to end the show. We saw a couple of the guys out afterwards and they seemed to be enjoying the town. Great to know that we all shared a great night at an amazing theater.

I had a photo pass for the night, so I will post those pics as soon as I get a chance to edit them. Does anyone have the full setlist?

PS One thing about Athens, even though the boys are tearing it up, the venue is not the best. Just an FYI.

Another great show! I loved hearing both versions of Outtasite, Misunderstood, ALTWYS, Shouldn't Be Ashamed...it was a really great setlist. The Tennessee Theater is really beautiful, too.

Wendy, Jen, Doug, Heather, Russ, and Greg - I had so much fun hanging out with you guys! Hope to see you all again soon. :cheers

People who expect others to sit at a rock concert are idiots. Stay home and listen to the album, this isn't church.

I didn't drive four hours to see my favorite band to watch the back of somebody's head for two hours. I've attended many concerts and had someone blocking my view the majority of the show. Right, it's a rock concert and people will be drunk and active, however, treat the people behind you with respect.

It's a given that standing and dancing will be happening on the floor but if you are obviously blocking several rows behind you (ie the balcony), be sympathetic.

I was on the first row of the balcony (Knoxville) but if I'd stood, I'd have blocked everyone behind me. It was all good.

I had a blast, too! We definitely have to do it again sometime. Oh and thanks for the beer. I owe you one. :cheekkiss And it was great meeting all the other VC'ers and non-VC'ers. Pretty sure I'll see some of you in Asheville.

Still can't believe I actually met Wilco. What a day/night!

Excellent, glad to hear somebody taped it. But did you miss Outta Site (Outta Mind)?

(And did I nail the setlist from memory, albeit out of order? Holy shit!)

When they open with Outta Mind (Outta Sight), you know that it's going to be an amazing show. That was an excellent set list. They were a kick ass straight up rock band for 2 hours. Time and money were again well spent.

It was a pleasure meeting and talking with Wendy, Watch Me Fall and Elixir Sue for a couple of hours. Thanks!

That looks correct to me. Please be sure to let us know when and where you put it up. I can't wait to hear it again.
