bobbob1313
It's not that simple. Rice and beans, for instance, is very cheap and healthy. Most places aren't going to have locally-grown rice, but that's some stuff that is plenty cheap, natural, and healthy. Americans like things that taste good too, and variety. For some reason, the idea of eating the same thing with every meal is anti-American. But still, I'd say cost is the biggest factor to why we are so unhealthy as a whole. For many, price isn't an issue, and that's where youget into choice. And finding the reasons why people choose to eatthings that are bad for them is a task far greater than this board can handle. Getting people to eat healthier on the whole would require a massive restructering of our agricultural system.
jenbobblehead
I don't think it is that hard to figure out--people eat stuff that is bad for them because they can, and because they don't realize (or choose not to care because perhaps it doesn't cost them anything) that eating something healthier is cheaper in the long run. I mean, why would they? If they don't have health insurance and they are poor, then medicaid/medicare will cover their health problems, just like folks who smoke and end up with lung cancer. Granted eating shitty is a little different from being addicted to nicotine, but the end result is the same, isn't it? I honestly do not believe it is cheaper to feed your family at mcdonalds (especially once you factor in all the costs) than it is to feed them fresh, natural food. Fresh need not mean organic, btw, it just means Whole Food (as opposed to Whole Foods) and fresh foods. perhaps a mod will break out the food stuff and we can have another thread that doesn't include Sarah Palin? bjorn_skurj
A problem is that a lot of people living in cities do not have easy access to fresh food. Poughkeepsie, for instance, hasn't had a supermarket in the city for more than a decade now.

M. (hristine
don't mean to be a dick, but you didn't answer his question, which was a fair and good one. feasible cost Feasible? You are correct that a high density calorie diet is cheaper. Studies have shown it time and again. The lowest income families are the most obese. Americans spend less of their income on food than most industrialized nations. We consume cheap calories and get fat. Diabetes and heart disease skyrocket. I live at the poverty line and rarely consume McDonald's or any other packaged food for that matter. Why? Because it is my priority to feed my body and the body of my child in a way that nourishes rather than just temporarily sates hunger. High density foods create craving since the body is not really being nourished. It's an addictive cycle. I don't have time for the government to stop subsidizing soy and corn farmers. I have to make dinner TONIGHT. We can't have it both ways, bobbob.

bobbob1313
Americans spend less of their income on food than most industrialized nations. So maybe we need to address why this is. Do you think it's by choice?
M. (hristine
So maybe we need to address why this is. Do you think it's by choice? Is habit the same as choice? I work in a grocery store. I watch what employees eat for lunch. We all pay the same employee price, and get a choice of a salad bar, prepared food; Italian, Chinese, an 'American' food court and a deli. What do you suppose 90% of the employees choose to eat?
