Wilco-Brooklyn 7/13/09

Recommended Posts

Sums up my thoughts...

If I didn't like the band I wouldn't go. It is just frustrating knowing that they know how to play all the songs in there catelog and they have done so recently and they don't throw in a few more nuggets in the live show. Sure the songs they play at every show sound polished but I like Wilco when they play that one off and it sounds a little rusty..one of my favortie surprises at a Wilco show was when they played Pieholden last time in Brooklyn. It was awesome. It made me wonder why they don't play it more oftent! I just find it strange why a band of Wilco's skill and talent wouldn't want to push the live boundry a little further and mix it up. Taht being said I did thoroughly enjoy the show at Keyspan!

Well put.

For all the folks that wish that they'd change it up some more, let's put the new songs aside, since they are touring on a new album. Let's also put aside the rarer tunes that they played in Brooklyn. Like Cant Stand It and I'm Always in Love. Let's focus on the "standards" that always get played. If they swapped out Shot in the Arm or You Are My Face or Heavy Metal Drummer for something like Shouldn't Be Ashamed or Radio Cure, sure the message board folks (and certainly me) would be thrilled. But how many of the more casual fans of the 12,000 in Brooklyn would be disappointed? How many folks would be disappointed that they went to see Wilco for the first time and didn't get to hear HMD?

We have these discussions all the time and we've certainly beaten the issue in the ground. I agree with the folks that want more variety. I just think it's unrealistic. There are more casual fans at these shows than hardcore fans (and the website requests were an attempt to GIVE the hardcore fans want they want (and they got it)).

Wilco (The Hardcore Concert Series)

Yeah that would be fun! I have a fun idea...Wilco should do 2 night stands at every location they visit. One night will be dubbed the "Hits" night and the other will be "Hardcore" night for the hardcore fans...Wishful Thinking I suppose :P

Someone please look at how many different songs they have played so far on this tour. I think you will be surprised.

I can understand being a little underwhelmed by the variety, but if you look at the shows from the Summerteeth tour or the YHF tour there was not only less variety in the song selection, but they were playing almost the exact same order every night as well. So they've actually gotten a lot better with this.

It's pretty funny. This entire thread mirrors the criticisms on Springsteen's boards. The hardcore fans complain that they hear the same 12-15 songs every night with only a few variables, none of which appease them enough. "Why can't he rest Born to Run just one night and break out Seaside Bar Song or Frankie." Then the next poster says, "If you don't like it then stay home and give the rest of us who can't go to many shows a chance." Then the next poster says to look at the pre-internet tours like Darkness and Born To Run when he played the exact same set every single night for months on end and that instant access has ruined any spontaneity.

I think that's becoming more apparent of late, and that's positive for the band. I've noticed more people on this board saying things like they loved hearing Spiders live for the first time. I also noticed a big high school and college contingent in the lot and at the show at Keyspan. It's as if the Dave Matthews crowd has taken notice, much like the Phish crowd did with AGIB. And that's a positive sign for the band that the fanbase is growing and expanding.

Unfortunately for me, that means seeing the band in larger and larger venues. My last four shows were Sayreville (tiny), Red Bank (small theater), McCarren Pool (huge), and Keyspan (mammoth) (aside from opening for Neil Young at MSG). I miss the intimacy and the feeling of being close and getting enveloped in the music. On the other hand, it's great to celebrate the band with big crowds who genuinely care about great music.

I always thought it was funny that for all the bickering and desire to hear all the rarities, anytime you look at the top requests for a show they're always songs like Misunderstood, California Stars, At Least That's What You Said, and other songs that typically get lumped in with the "we hear them too much" crowd. Maybe the people who are asking for a variety are just a more vocal minority. We do have to take into account that being an album release tour, W(TA) songs are inevitably going to take up slots, I guess I'd just prefer 3-4 of the old standards as opposed to 6-7 standards.

With all that said, and that dead horse punched one more time, I can't effing wait for Wappingers Falls!!!

I think when scrolling down a list of song titles posted from a setlist (of a show you didn't attend), it's easier to complain about familiar titles. When I'm at a Wilco show, I pretty much never have the thought "I'd rather be hearing (song title) right now." They play the songs they play because they sound GREAT live.

Oh, I agree. I wasn't clear. I was trying to say they've actually played more variety (a longer list of songs overall) than people might realize.

That is a good variety for 10 shows. Funny thing is I have seen only 1 show supporting this album and 1 solo show and I have heard every song on that list live except Shouldn't be Ashamed at one point or another.....

It seems obvious that Wilco have really honed their stagecraft over the last several tours. This includes a great feel as to what might work better in 12,000 capacity ball field (Keyspan) or 9000 capacity outdoor venue (Berkeley) given the size of the audience and the venue. There is the added issue of that as your catalogue increases and especially when you have released a new record there is less room for old chestnuts That said, and as much as love these two songs, it would seem that mixing up the inclusion of "Misunderstood" and "Spiders"in the encore would allow the band to reward long time and newer fans with three or four alternatives in the encore. What I really love about Wilco is that when curfews don't interfere they will give an audience 25 - 27 songs and up to 2 1/2 hours of stage time.

After the death of Pigpen, the Grateful Dead pretty much played the same mix of songs from about 1973 to the time Brent Mydland passed away in 1990 . They kicked ass in the process. I'll never forget the second night of two nights of Wilco at Irving Plaza, NYC some time around '98 or so. About a third of the way through the show Jeff sensed that the crowd was getting unsettled because they were playing the exact same setlist as the first night. He said something along the lines of "what are you complaining about, a few blocks from here you have a theater district where the same play is performed 365 days a year. This post has no point whatsoever. I follow you all that want some variety I just don't bother commenting on it. It is what it is. Wilco will love you baby.

Perhaps the only conclusion that we can come to is that some people [here, that is] want nothing more than Wilco to visit their exact town, play the perfect venue, and perform every song that THEY want to hear. If this were the case, here's to hoping they play a private show just for me in a 200-seat theater in Kansas City, MO, in which I get to invite all of my friends, and Wilco will play nothing but individual requests, like a Living Room show.

But seriously...

the last time Wilco played KC was 10/13/2007, and boy did we get some rarities.

Yeah, I realized that I failed to highlight a few other key tracks after I made the post...this show was so good. It was the same night that the big-shiny new Sprint Center arena opened in KC - and Elton John was playing. Jeff made cracks all night long about Elton John that were hilarious. Good quality recording of this show out there too.

In the AGIB tour days, I think I heard Company at every show. For a while, they were playing PKB all the time. About a year ago, you would hear Too Far Apart every show. It's all cyclical :)

wait what are you talking about the dead played different every night and they had 6 or 7 studio albums of all new songs going into their sets after pig pen dies. after he dies they arguably had the most new material ever for their band. they are no the band to compare wilco to in this sense.
