Also on the setlist (but not played): Hummingbird (after ITMWLY), Far Far Away (before Spiders), and Hoodoo Vooodoo (closing the show) Outtasite (Outtamind) was not on the written setlist. Saw three tapers.Epic show, band was in good spirits and Glenn now has a gong. More to come, sleep now.
Preferred B
Glenn's gong saw a lot of action! And Liam is amazing. Great night.
bböp
Interesting tidbit: According to Wilcobase, Cars Can't Escape and A Magazine Called Sunset have only been played at the same show five, now six, times (and actually, one was at a Living Room show, so it's really five times at an actual Wilco show). Three of the five times have been in Iowa -- twice at Val-Air Ballroom in Des Moines (9-17-03 and 3-9-08) and tonight in Iowa City. Weird. The other two times, incidentally, at were the first Auditorium Theatre shows (9-19-03 and 9-20-03). I can't say tonight's rendition of Cars was the finest one ever, though. Jeff flubbed a lyric and Nels, who was battling technical difficulties for much of the night, definitely had problems during this song (though Jeff noted that he made a nice comeback at the end)! Still, it's always great to hear the B-sides... And the setlist posted by mylifeisought to start this thread is the correct one, as played.
H.Stone
Thanks for the setlist--it's nice to see Deeper Down on it. P, I feel like I'm watching an NFL broadcast with your stats: "The only other time a 49ers quarterback threw for over 400 yards with three Texas A&M grads on his line was..." That is pretty bizarre, though. I remember Cars from the last Val Air show. Jeff wanted to know who requested it since he claimed about 90% of the audience was thinking, "What the fuck was that?" There must be an Iowan who keeps bumping both Cars and Magazine to the top of the request list. But as you said, it's always great to hear B-sides.

itstillmoves84
-Cars Can't Escape That's a hell of a way to start another leg! Can't wait to hear the sound. C'mon, we need a Northeast Winter Tour!!
sonnyfeeling
Here's the set list. They called a few audibles, but we had no complaints
Preferred B
Before Cars, Jeff did mention that it was one of the most requested songs, so they'd play it ... but that didn't mean they were going to like it. Ha. Casino Queen was great, and Sonny Feeling always makes me happy. I think Jeff should have followed through on his threat (on the heels of Jesus, Etc.) to let the audience sing lead on Sonny too. Jeff seems to have a new guitar - or, at least, I'd never seen it before. It replaced the gold top for Wilco (the song). At this point I think my daughter might be more excited to see Liam Finn than Wilco next week. When I found out that he and EJ were playing a full show in Madison on Sunday, I just about exploded with glee.

kencoomerislockedinmybasement
Wilco could record their belches and I'd be first in line to buy it. They could perform said belch album in its entirety and I'd buy a ticket. That said, this was an average show. Granted, average Wilco shows are better than most bands on their best nights, but...they were rusty and I needed beer. Dry campus, dry building = bleeccch. They're swell guys for doing the request-a-song thing on the website, but I'd prefer they take control and play what they want to. The jokes JT made last night about "gaming the system" were apt. And Cars Can't Escape sucked, btw. His quip, "we're gonna play it, but we're not gonna like it" rang true indeed. California Stars? Casino? Jeez. Sounded extra tired to me. Can't please everyone. I know, I know. They do play a full show, no qualms there. P.S. - Liam Finn and EJ layered big sounds with just two peeps and looper. Good stuff there.

ditty
There is literally nothing interesting about that. Show some respect...your kidding, correct? bbop's been to more shows this year, than you've had birthdays. It's good to see Jeff following through with the true meaning of requests and the fact that these songs haven't been played at the same show more than a handful of times is incredible at this point with the wide catalog of songs available to them. Thanks for the variety Jeff! Can't wait to see you in Columbus and both nights in Chicago!

I cannot imagine the 'request a tune idea' to be that of JT... (i smell management & marketing) he's simply far to cynical and, let's not kid ourselves, in it for his own pleasure. Casino sucked. Sorry. A.M. songs will never be the same w/o our friend in the sky... Pat screwed up the hooks (met with glaring stares from JT) - i love the evolution of the Wilco, but the classic twang tunes are poorly represented these days. For the record i loved the show and had one of the best experiences of my life holding my 9 yr old son as he sat on the rail 15 ft. from the stage. A roadie, or P.A. (?) brought him Glenn's sweaty towel and drumsticks after the show Wilco loves me? Well, we love them back.

heffer
right, so number of shows attended is directly proportionate to being interesting is it? seriously, this is like trainspotting with songs or something.
Wendy
right, so number of shows attended is directly proportionate to being interesting is it? seriously, this is like trainspotting with songs or something. IMO your belaboring of your disinterest in this topic is uninteresting. Tell us what does interest you about this show and maybe we'll get a nicer conversation going.
