Wilco -- 10/8/09, Cedar Park, TX

Recommended Posts

It's late, so I'll just post the setlists for this arena spectacular (or not spectacular, depending on your point of view). Jim Scott, who co-produced both Wilco (the album) and the Seven Worlds Collide project, was at the show (with a couple of the Dixie Chicks, I'm told), and got shoutouts from both Wilco and Liam Finn. There was also Jeff's "regifting" of a signed Nolan Ryan baseball to somebody named Patrick in the first few rows. Apparently it was Patrick's birthday.

Anyway, here's what Wilco played:

Wilco (the song)

A Shot in the Arm

Bull Black Nova

You Are My Face

IATTBYH>

One Wing

At Least That's What You Said

One By One

I'll Fight

Impossible Germany

Deeper Down

Handshake Drugs

Can't Stand It (dedicated to Jim Scott)

Jesus, etc. (crowd singalong)

Hate It Here

Theologians

I'm The Man Who Loves You

------------------------

Via Chicago

You Never Know (w/Liam Finn on acoustic guitar and vox)

California Stars (w/Liam Finn on acoustic guitar and Eliza Jane Barnes on maracas and vox)

The Late Greats

Heavy Metal Drummer

------------------------

Walken

Kingpin ("livin' in Austin," natch)

Monday>

Outtasite (Outta Mind)>

Hoodoo Voodoo

And here was Liam Finn's set, for anyone who cares:

Plane Crash

Long Way To Go

Gather To The Chapel

Red Wine Bottle (w/Glenn Kotche on drums)

I'll Be Lightning

—improv freestyle interlude—

On Your Side>

Second Chance

Lead Balloon

I know I am going to take some grief for this comment, but I am really not excited about these set lists. It is generally the same songs except for 1 or 2 a night with a different song mixed in here and there. They have been usuing the same encore songs for the past few years. Never the less I will still enjoy the shows I am planning to go to.

I agree with you. They need a good shake up! We know they can play almost ever song live so there should be some good mixups!

The show was great but the venue sucked. Stubbs is a much better place to see them

Phooey. Stubbs is okay if and ONLY if 1) the weather in Austin actually cooperates for once and it's not hot & humid or cold & raining outside, or 2) you luck out and surround yourself with an audience that's there to watch and listen to the band performing onstage. Otherwise, it's a barrage of nonstop talking, cell phones/texting, drinking and smoking for a social scene rather than a concert. The ideal place for Wilco in Austin is a multiple-night stand at the Long Center, with Bass Concert Hall a distant second.

That being said, last night's show turned out much better than I expected it to, considering it was a hockey arena way out in the middle of nowhere (i.e. Williamson County) and the band seemed to be having a genuinely good time soaking in the strangeness of it all.

Agreed.

"Is this WilCo County?"

The show was great....I believe that was the 8th Wilco concert I've ever been to, never heard Tweedy make that many jokes or been that upbeat. I agree the venue sucked, $10 parking and $8 beers.....They should have played down town and a second night. Tweedy even mentioned he was dissapointed they weren't playing Austin 2 nights, also said Austin is the best (or one of the best) cities to play in.

I agree with the comment about mixing up the set. Roughly the same as three months ago when I saw them. I was also pissed that the address on the band's official site was completely wrong. It was the address for some type of management office that venue rented out in the shopping center that Wal Mart was in. Thankfully my friendly neighborhood Chili's bartender pointed me in the right direction.

The same setlist only matters if you see every show.

Actually it matters if you see more than one.

I hope you were paying attention to Jeff's rant tonight (in Dallas)...

I think he's tired with internet whiners

To be honest I don't really care what Jeff Tweedy is or is not tired of. I'm tired of ITMWLY, but I expect it when I go to a show, just like he should expect some criticism in a forum dedicated to talking about each show. People around here throw just as much high praise his way as criticism. The purpose of this subforum is to discuss the shows and the sets, and I would find it pretty boring if no one ever said anything but OH MAN BEST SHOW/SET EVER HIGH FIVE. You said the same setlist only matters if you see every show. The point stands that if you see two back to back, and they have the same set, it would matter to you. I was simply agreeing with someone up there that, when you are attending multiple shows, you like it when they mix it up a bit more.

We're obviously attending multiple dates, we love this band and their shows, it was a simple comment. We're hardly crying into our pillows over here. And it was a great show tonight, with a great set shuffle.

For the sixth time tonight, why?

I've seen them several times too, including tonight. I feel that in smaller venues WILCO makes more of a connection with the crowd and there is more energy. I just felt like there was some distance between the crowd and the band, and I had really great seats and still felt this way. Maybe my seats were too close to really get the proper mix for the sound, and I could hear a noticeable echo from the back of the house. Coming from out of town I thought it was difficult to get to Cedar Park, and I was less than thrilled with parking. I had to go to guest services for a small matter and chatted with the manager a bit and we talked about parking and he said they normally charge 15 for parking, he said WILCO management got them to lower the price, kudos to them. I think the only thing I liked about Cedar Park the Venue (the band were top notch as always) were the roaming beer guys, that was cool.

I didn't notice any sound problem, but maybe I just don't have an ear for that sort of thing. I was from out of town too (DFW) but it was really pretty much a straight shot down 35 for me. I liked the parking, lot was new, and quick to get out. I don't think I waited more than 5 minutes. All concessions prices were pretty out there, but I don't drink, so it didn't really bother me like it did some others.

I don't go to every show but I do attend a lot of them. Jeff staes that the band can now play EVERY Wilco song. I don't understand why they play the same songs over and over. I do love the band and love the shows. I would just like to be suprised every once in awhile with a song or two from the back catalogue.

Thank's for summing up how I feel. I don't listen to Wilco to make Jeff happy. I listen to Wilco becuase they are an excellent band made of great musicians. Despite the changing cast memebers.
