SarahC
I am a music major in school, and for the last 3 years I have been forced to sing Italian arias and crummy little art songs. I mean it's okay, and I've learned a ton, and actually loved quite a few of the pieces, but just as many make me cringe. Today, in my 3rd lesson with my new teacher, she suggested I sing a musical theatre song. I can't stand musical theatre stuff, and explained my reasons. She said "Well, what about a pop song, like a Beatles song or something?" I said the Beatles would be awesome, but the keys a lot of those songs are written in aren't ideal for the female voice. I suggested Wilco. My teacher said if I could find a song in a key that works, and that is kinda slow, then I could do it. So, these are my options (I am limited to songs in the Wilco songbook, because it is mandatory I have sheet music). Sunken Treasure Jesus Etc. At Least That's What You Said All 3 of those songs, I think, could work. They sit vocally right in my middle register which is what we are trying to focus on this semester. I think from an "art song" perspective "Sunken Treasure" or "ALTWYS" would work better, because they tell a bit more of a story than "Jesus, Etc." does. What do you guys think would be a better song choice?
u2roolz
Jesus, Etc. would be nice sung by a woman. I think if you tried At Least That's What You Said or Sunken Treasure you would be compelled to rock out at the end with air guitar and get an F.Not to mention the former song is pretty short without that amazing ending. It's at 112bpm I think. I also thought about "Poor Places", but I am scared my teacher won't like the lyrics. I pretty much had to skip 50% of the songs that are even in the song book based on lyrical content. Unfortunately, Misunderstood would not be well received on a classical bill. I think ALTWYS would be kinda neat, because there's a repeat in it, so I could sing the verse twice or something.
Basil II
my gut feeling for you Sarah......would be "Sunken Treasure" ...... -Robert

Reedo
At Least that's what you said! Pleeeeeaaaaaase
Shining Sunbeam
What about "Country Disappeared". I think that one is a great vocal turn by Tweedy. I have no idea if you could find sheet music, however.
Griddles
Less than you think. This is a serious suggestion. Stay on stage for the drone at the end as well. That would kick ass, but might get an F. It's gonna be fun though.

Mr. Kinsley
I'd definitely go with Sunken Treasure. The lyrical content on ALTWYS might be a bit harsh for your audience. Lots of great imagery in Treasure.
ponch1028
I know you've already decided on ALTWYS or Sunken Treasure, but these few songs immediately jumped out at me as intriging possibilities: Ashes of American FlagsOne True VineRadio CureReservationsSky Blue SkyPlease Be Patient With MeCountry Disappeared
SarahC
One True Vine would be AMAZING! But, then there's no sheet music. I'm not even sure the stuff in the song book will work, but it's earth shattering that my teacher would even consider it. I'd definitely go with Sunken Treasure. The lyrical content on ALTWYS might be a bit harsh for your audience. Lots of great imagery in Treasure.True. I had to sing a song 3 semesters back about a dead baby though. So sometimes classical music is harsh too, a lot of the stuff they pick for me to sing tends to be a bummer though. I do think sunken treasure would be a winner though. You get could an ensemble of Mongolian throat singers to do the drone. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwANedEkqaY

Moss
I think you should do "Misunderstood" and do about 50 "Nothings" at the end. Nothing! Nothing! Nothing at all...
Ghost of Electricity
If this is being decided democratically my vote is for Jesus, etc. Here's a great version in Swedish which is absolutely beautiful : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyFfXyY0xdU
mpolak21
I think you could work up a pretty sweet arrangement of Sunken Treasure. --Mike
