rpmurphy
How come wilco never covered this song on mermaid ave? Too trendy?
rockinrob
mermaid avenue was made from woody guthrie manuscripts. He never recorded the songs and no one remembered how they went, so wilco and billy bragg made music to fit them. Obviously, this land is your land is well known and was recorded. The whole point of the record was to save lost songs.
LouieB
Trendy? If it is it has been trendy for oh....about 60 or more years. I am sure Jeff Tweedy covered it at some point....every who ever picked up a guitar has played it. LouieB

Doug C
I remember in elementary school chorus we could only sing it sans the so-called Socialist verse: As I was walkin' - I saw a sign thereAnd that sign said - no trespassin'But on the other side .... it didn't say nothin! Now that side was made for you and me! That was a common practice back then as was the Americanism versus Communism class that was a high school graduation requirement.

LouieB
I think This Land is Your Land was written to counter the song God Bless America. This seems to be a correct story. Irving Berlin wrote God Bless America. There was a great article in the NY Times a few years back about the dicotomy of popular music based on these songs. I guess I forget that many of the guitar players on this board aren't of the hootenanny generation.... LouieB

This is true, but Hoodoo Voodoo is pretty much the same song as 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 from this album here(you can check out a little clip of it - basically it's the same song, about as basically as Woody Guthrie singing the same lyrics to his songs gets, anyway)
