Rest in Peace, Prince

Recommended Posts

Let's see, my top 10:

1. Purple Rain (kinda a no-brainer)

2. Lovesexy (a controversial choice, but every song on there is ace, except maybe one)

3. Dirty Mind

4. The Love Symbol (underrated)

5. The Black Album

6. Sign o' the Times

7. Chaos and Disorder (also underrated, and Prince's best guitar album)

8. 1999

9. Controversy (maybe I'm just not familiar enough with it)

10. The Gold Experience

can't say i like 10 of his albums, the ones i do like a lot are:

01 Around The World In A Day

02 Sign O The Times

03 Purple Rain

04 1999

then there are these:

05 Prince (this is a 50/50 one for me)

06 Controversy (don't like this one much, but i do love "jack u off")

edit: shit, forgot Parade - that'd be 5th on that list

01. Purple Rain (probably seen the film a dozen times over the years and listened to the record too many times to count)

02. Sign 'o' the Times (this and Purple duke it out for top spot in my books)

03. The Black Album (bought this on vinyl then CD back in the days before it got an official release... still his funkiest record ever)

04. Lovesexy (Always liked this one. Some really innovative arrangements and sequencing on here. One of the best live concert boots I saw of Prince was from this tour.)

05. Around the World in a Day

06. Parade

07. 1999

08. Dirty Mind

09. Graffiti Bridge (there's some great underrated Prince tracks on this one)

10. Controversy

11. The one with the symbol on the cover

12. The Vault: Old Friends 4 Sale

13. Chaos and Disorder

14. Prince

15. Diamonds and Pearls

I've still not heard them all, but here goes. And there hasn't been enough recent Prince love yet. So I threw Lotusflower in the ten spot. Obviously it doesn't equal his classics, but I think it's a consistent album, and I still play it from time to time.

Purple Rain

Around The World

Sign O The Times

Dirty Mind

1999

The Undertaker (live studio bootleg. Some incredible stuff on here. Prince on guitar, with a drummer and a bassist. Great blues rock)

Black Album

Controversy

Love Symbol

Lotusflower

I listened to Chaos and Disorder for the first time earlier, and it might make the list eventually.

1 - Sign 'O' the Times (this is the only real easy choice here)

2 - Dirty Mind (when you're listening to Dirty Mind, it's a safe bet no one's listening to anything nastier than you are)

3 - Parade (a bunch of small weird unshakable songs about love and maybe France and death)

4 - Purple Rain (1984 - when Prince and the world had sex)

5 - 1999 (what it lacks in flow it more than makes up for in song quality - when I happen to hear a particular tune from this, apart from the album, I'm always struck by how good it is)

6 - The Black Album (a friend and I played this album so much at a warehouse job my co-workers declared an official moratorium on it - perfect music to pack shelves to. Maybe his weirdest one ever. It's the album I think had to inspire the Smog song 'Prince Alone In The Studio')

7 - Lovesexy (I've never had a problem with the fact that the CD is one continuous track - it makes sense to me)

8 - Graffiti Bridge (unwatchable movie that I actually saw at the theater, but some of his best songs ever live here with welcome appearances from The Time weaved in - 'Thieves In The Temple' might be his best song ever)

9 - Emancipation (sure it's three hours long but the gems pop up left and right and up and down all over the place. And there's a giddy sense of joy throughout the whole thing)

10 - Around the World in a Day (Pop! Even 'Temptation' is fun to listen to)

11 - Come (should be in the dictionary next to 'overlooked' - besides 'Papa' all of this is solid)

12 - Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic (shoulda been the comeback album - outside of the Gwen Stefani song and maybe the Sheryl Crow cover (maybe), it certainly deserved to be)

And:

The B-Sides, from The Hits package (nobody has more classic songs backing up their singles than Prince)

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that digs this record. I played the crap out of it when it came out (though there was a time when that was true of all his albums.) I think this might be Prince's most overlooked record when you consider how many gems are on it.

p.s. I dig your Billy Sparks avatar :thumbup

Well, someone still believes in cds:

Prince: 'The Internet Is Over'

Prince has given what has been billed as his first U.K. newspaper interview in a decade as part of a deal for his new album, "20Ten."

The Daily Mirror will give the album away July 10 as a free CD with the paper, while European deals have also been struck with Rolling Stone Germany and a Belgian newspaper.

In the interview, Prince outlines his anti-Internet stance. Naturally his comments have been widely circulated via the Internet.

"The Internet is completely over," Prince told the Mirror. "I don't see why I should give my new music to iTunes or anyone else. They won't pay me an advance for it and then they get angry when they can't get it."

He added: "The Internet's like MTV. At one time MTV was hip and suddenly it became outdated."

Prince is not a fan of digital devices, either. "All these computers and digital gadgets are no good," he said. "They just fill your head with numbers and that cant be good for you."

Prince does not intend "20Ten" to get a download release in addition to the free CD distribution with newspapers and magazines. He has also shut down his official website and does not plan to license new music to download stores or subscription services.

A U.S. distribution deal for the album has yet to be confirmed. The record has been linked with Warner Bros.
