kidsmoke
I love post-Christmas far more than the actual day of Christmas. I love when the nice new items have time to slip into my life and I can delight in a gift as I use it. For me, right now, it's the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour Season Three, which the kids and I watched last night. It took me right back to 1968, when I was 12...I felt 12 again watching it. It was powerful and poignant, because of course the world has changed since then, but the political comments brought to mind how little some things ever really change! Pat Paulsen's "political speech" wouldn't have sounded outdated today. The first episode shown was taped shortly after the 1968 Democratic National Convention riots. The episode featured singer Harry Belafonte singing against a background of footage from the riots, in a bit that totally captured the zeitgeist of the times. It was a bit the CBS censors hadn't allowed to air, at the time, and it swept me away just to watch it. It was actually painful to watch, and to remember what that year had been like! Those of you who are old enough to remember will know just what I mean. How did we ever make it through 1968?! Brennan (19) and Alissa (14) needed it explained to them, so we paused the dvd for me to give them the briefest of history lessons. But it was so gratifying to watch them enjoy other parts of the episode: Cass Elliott, newly separated from the disbanded Mamas and Papas, crooning "Dream a Little Dream of Me" to Tommy Smothers, tucked in bed with a teddy bear, and Tom and Dick singing and riffing off each other ("My old man's a [insert job], whaddya think about that?" Tommy: "My old man's a negro, whattya think about that?" Dick, looking confused: "Now waitaminute, Tom, we're brothers, and your old man is my old man..." Tommy, of course, sputtering his explanation and looking even more confused...hahaha) The episode ended with Cass, Harry Belafonte, and Pat Paulsen in an episode of "Bonanzarosa!" Brilliant and so, so funny. Lots of cracks fitted in against the CBS censors. It was so great to realize that Brennan & Alissa were laughing as hard as I was. Great humor transcends the time in which it was made. What gift are you presently enjoying? Isn't it wonderful to slow down and just appreciate the thought that went into a gift? pillowy star
Right at this present moment, I am having fun looking into the mirror and seeing what the night did to my radical new haircut (which was a xmas gift I gave to myself ). I look like a wild pixie with everything standing up On Saturday & Sunday, I will be enjoying the whole of Season 6 of "Deadliest Catch", which we started watching by chance in New Zealand, and I got so hooked after only one episode that Rob bought us the whole season on DVD as soon as it came out. Oh joy!

Oh joy! Dunja, I want to see a picture of this new haircut. I'll bet it's really cute! I've also gotten sucked into a few episodes of "Deadliest Catch"...it's such high drama, men versus Mother Nature at her most forceful! All those mountainous grey waves...yikes. 'married..... with children', seasons 5 and 6 I remember when this show was brand new...we were all like, "Wait, you can't act like this on tv!" All the twisted sexual innuendos, Al with his hand down his pants, and the Bundys' unique take on parenting. That must be 20 years ago now, and modern shows make "Married...with Children" look almost tame, but it was groundbreaking in its time. This. I had one forever, then lost it. Kids got me another one this year. It's awesome. What a nifty little device! My little orange tree is producing a beautiful crop this year, so I think I need one of these. Do you know where I might find one? Here's a view of my tree's amusing "four-in-a-row" oranges: If you stood in the right spot and had a keen eye, you could fire an arrow straight through all four. But of course then I'd yell at you for spoiling my oranges.

kidsmoke
I love oranges! Nature's candy! You couldn't brown truck a couple of those my way, could you? I might could...but they are just babies yet. Let's see if they make it through these near-freezing temps we are currently having at night. Man it's cold! Guess I can't complain - most of the country has been shivering for weeks. These are such wonderful oranges, I'm so glad I decided to plant this tree back when! I think it's about ten years old now, definitely earning its keep. What part of the country are you in, High Heat? I know how hard it can be to get a decent orange in some areas like Minnesota. A friend who moved from here to there always tells me the oranges in the stores aren't very good.
pillowy star
Oh wow Donna! I most definitely live in the wrongest part of the whole world! I want an orange tree too PS: Pic of haircut = La Belle

Pampered Chef makes it, but you can find it elsewhere on the interweb. I guess that's kinda obvious.
Edie
I am digging "Just Kids" (already finished), and my book on how to take a picture of absolutely anything that Jake got for me I agree Donna; the post xmas time is really the best part of it.

We used to only get maybe an inch of snow per winter, but the past couple of years we've had accumulation. The sun is still working on ridding us of the 8 inches from Sunday's storm. We don't get Minnesota cold, but lows in 20's, 30's are normal Jan/Feb temps. Oranges from the store are plenty available, but yeah, they usually aren't very good, average at best. It's frustrating when you love 'em.

Guest Speed Racer
The lady's mom got us a real nice picnicking set - plates, silverware, cloth napkins and a cooler for food and a separate one for drinks. We are currently enjoying how pretty it is, as the snowbanks and below zero temperatures prohibit most picnic events for the next four to five months.

Because that would be nice to have... Thanks for clarifying that, Lauren, because I was clueless. Sounds handy! I love hearing of all these thoughtful gifts to allow everybody to relax and enjoy life...the Roku, cozy flannel sheets, your pic-a-nic basket! What a cool gift that is, and what wonderful images it projects of some future gorgeous balmy day with fruits and cheeses and mebbe a nice wine, enjoyed in some beautiful setting! And likely not a thing one would break down and buy for themselves, so it's even more of a treat. Cool!
Guest Speed Racer
I got new slippers for the office which are not only cozy, but emphasize the "business" in "business casual" (as much as slippers can). My last pair were pretty lifeless after three years.
kidsmoke
I got a Go-Girl and can now do the one thing I ever really envied guys being able to do (well, other than getting paid equally for the same work and being able to strip off my shirt on a hot day without getting arrested)....I can pee standing up!!! Too fun, and what a sense of power! I need to find someplace with snow so I can try out writing my name in the snow. Go Girl I can think of a lot of situations where it's gonna be handy. Works like a charm, too.
Guest Speed Racer
A friend wanted to get that for me recently, and I told her I was confident she would only be spending money on something that would lead me to urinate on myself, which is something I try not to dabble in anymore. That was my hesitation too, but...not a bit! Very neat. Thankfully, since I also try to avoid peeing on myself. I hope to save that experience for at least my late 80's or so. "Taint" the simplest concept to grasp, I would imagine.
