Now Drinking...

Recommended Posts

I picked up some of this last night, but have yet to try it:

Just seemed like something that the wife and I would enjoy. (We both love a nice stout with a good piece of chocolate.)

You had it?

How be it?

You will enjoy it. I got a bottle for my wife as a birthday present a couple of years ago. Very well done, as is every Ommegang beer that I have had. Rich, flavorful. The chocolate is definitely apparent.

Speaking of nice stouts, this one is simply amazing:

Amazing as in; you won't believe the aroma after pouring and it tastes every bit as good as it smells. Seriously, you have to try one and you'll know what I mean..

Yeah they are like $9 a bottle but it's worth it.

Man, we totally disagree on the Creme Brulee stout. I like some stouts with a lot of vanilla flavor, but that one was way over the top for me. I can definitely see how some people like it, though - and I would expect if you like it, you really like it.

Yeah it's definitely over the top. It's by far the most flavorful beer I have ever tasted and can see how some people might think it's a little too flavorful. I could only drink one that's for sure.

That creme brulee stout seems like something that I need to try, whether I will like it or not remains to be seen. But it sounds interesting.

Is it a regional brew? I've never seen that label around Chicago.

I would think it would be available pretty much everywhere there is a beer/whine specialty store. It would be in the section with the single bottles, definitely top shelf.

had one of these last night...

Basically their stock BW spiked with a Belgian yeast strain (for their "odd year release").

Not bad, a little sweeter than I'd like, but worth the 5.99 I paid for it. I bought an extra one to lay down for a year, we'll see how it improves over time.

For some reason I just can't drink IPA's anymore... Or any beer with A LOT of hops.. I was drinking a lot of Dogfish Head IPA and just got tired of it. And now anything too hoppy makes me borderline queasy. It's a shame because it used to be one of my favorites. Strange how that happens.

Lately I've been sticking to crappy American beer, the occasional Sam Adams, or stout like I listed earlier on special occasions.

Best summer drink (even famed New England food critic The Phantom Gourmet put it at the top of their list). A beautiful mix of the best iced tea out there on the market and lemonade. Not too much sugar either. Only about 13mg per serving.

We hit 60 today in New Hampshire and it looks like spring outside. There's no gray sky today, only blue sky and that yellow thing that I haven't seen in quite awhile.

:cheers

It's actually a very Phil Collins day. And by that I mean No Jacket Required. :monkey

Had a couple of these over the weekend. It tastes every bit as dark/stout as it looks. Sort of has that smokey taste that Guinness has. Also 9+% alcohol but it's hidden pretty well by the stouty goodness. A very good beer (as one would expect from Sam Adams), one of the best stouts I've had.

man, that is unfortunate...did you get sick offa ipa's? that happened to me and whiskey...i can't even be in a room when a bottle is opened or i get queasy (maybe you can return the "that's unfortunate" remark that i tossed your way at the beginning of my post). i love dfh ipa's. also stone ruination. that's what i've been on lately.

Had that Omegang chocolate stout the other day and it was surprisingly drinkable for a 7% ABV brew. Tasty, to be sure. But, of course, "drinkable" can also be used as another word for "there isn't much to it." Sadly, this was the case. I mean, it was enjoyable, but if you are looking for something to get lost in, like a really good Trappist, this is not your beer. And for the price, it's certainly not bringing bang for the buck. Unless it was all just too subtle for me to catch.

It had a very foamy head that did not dissipate... ever, which was nice, but it wasn't as thick as the head on a stout on something like a Guinness. More like a porter. The chocolate was there and so were the malts (very subdued), and just the slightest edge of hops. That's about it. Went down TOO easily. Without even hardly noticing. A little bit disappointed. I'd be curious to hear your take on it, though. See if you get more out of it than I do. Hopefully you'll be able to find some.

Maybe I had just psyched myself up for it too much. Maybe it's a food beer. You know, it could be a really good food beer -- maybe a richer meat like lamb, venison, or even duck might pull out more of the flavor. I didn't hate it, just not rushing out to spend that $14 again. Although, if I knew that I had a meal including any of the above, I might think to get it again.

I didn't get sick off of an IPA, I just got tired of it for some reason.. I think It started when I had a Sierra Nevada Holiday beer (very hoppy) that didn't sit right with me. Then I went back to a DFH and couldn't finish it.. The overwhelming ammount of hops made me queezy... :ohwell

I love Dog Fish Head's other beers though, but I wish they weren't impossible to find. Anytime you do find DFS it's one of the IPA's.. At least around here.

The giant, foamy head is from the Belgian yeast. The lack of body to the head compared to Guinness is because Guinness (draught and "widget" cans & bottles) are nitrogenated rather than carbonated.

Now drinking: Guinness Extra Stout. Can't ever go wrong really....

Couple weekends ago I had one of these at a bar in Aiken, SC:

It's Guinness and Shock Top.. Pretty darn good. They had a whole menu of Guinness hybrids (Guinness/Newcastle, Guinness/Blue Moon, etc. etc). drinkingbeer.gif
