wryanj
Given Wilco has put out so many albums, and given the variety of their songs, what songs would you send a new fan to first? Can Itunes popularity ranking truly be trusted? Just curious to hear some opinions... --> Found this site the other day, its called GoRankem. Its Artist's songs ranked in accordance with opinions of true fans. Kind of a cool place to uncover the hidden gems, especially for new fans. Id recommend checking it out, possibly ranking yours? Is this an acceptable top 10? http://www.gorankem.com/artists/1181-Wilco
paulcalypse
Depends what kind of fan they are... I have some friends who are really big folk-country-rock type of people, and I got them into Hotel Arizona, Passenger Side, I Must Be High, and other cuts off the first two albums. They didn't care for AGIB stuff! Figure out what he or she likes, and then send them some songs to match. They will expand from there, I'm sure.
barbkm
I had Heavy Metal Drummer as the ring back on my phone, friend Scott called and was like, Wow, great song. So I gave him my extra copy of YHF and now he's a fan. Not the crazy get in line 4 hours before doors on a freezing cold day in December fan like me, but enough. So, I guess Heavy Metal Drummer works for me.
dark
Varies on the person I was trying to turn on to Wilco and its cool since there is so much variety to tap into

BeShakey
I usually give people a compilation covering their whole career and then direct them to albums based on what stuff they liked. A lot of people that don't think they would like 'country rock' find they like Wilco's early stuff.

Beltmann
Figure out what he or she likes, and then send them some songs to match. They will expand from there, I'm sure. This gets my vote for best answer. One friend first responded to "Heavy Metal Drummer," another to "Hesitating Beauty," another to "Poor Places." There is no formula, only subjectivity.
The High Heat
Varies on the person I was trying to turn on to Wilco and its cool since there is so much variety to tap intoVery true. I tried to turn a guy onto Wilco by lending him "The Egg Album" (as he called it), but he is a blues and rock fan. He hated it. Later, I made him a mix of the band's more easy to access songs from across their career and he liked that mix. Songs like California Stars and Casino Queen jump out and grab music fans who like it traditional.
howdjadoo
I'd be(MORE THAN) pleased with this selection; US 19-track promotional-only retrospective sampler CD produced to promote the release of 'Sky Blue Sky'. A good one for beginners if you wanna try and get into Wilco, theres a few songs off every album. 1. What Light2. I Must Be High3. Passenger Side4. Box Full Of Letters5. Monday6. Outtasite (Outta Mind)7. Misunderstood8. California Stars9. Can't Stand It10. Shot In The Arm11. Via Chicago12. Airline To Heaven13. Jesus Etc.14. I Am Trying To Break Your Heart15. Heavy Metal Drummer16. Handshake Drugs17. Theologians18. I'm A Wheel19. On And On And On

Hoodoo Man
NONE! Wilco is mine! If I turn other people onto them, then they'll get popular and I'll have to share them. Never!

wryanj
I do think it is important to find out what kind of songs they prefer. It's frustrating though--I told one of my friends to go check out Wilco because they are one of my favorite bands, and like most people, he went to itunes and sampled the most "popular" songs, which right now are all off the album Wilco since it was so recently released. So he told me that he like them, but they were not that great- which we all know is far from the truth. Once i made him listen to A Ghost is Born though, he fell in love with them. Its sad to think how many people hear of Wilco, sample 4 or 5 songs and form an opinion on them based on the particular songs they listen to. Hence why i was curious as to what people would recommend to new listeners. Thanks for the replies!
choo-choo-charlie
Based on his usual tastes, I started my brother out on a mix of AM, Being There and the Mermaid Avenue discs. He only casually sampled the mix for several months and didn't think much of it until he used it as a soundtrack for a road trip, then he was hooked. Now he declares AGIB to be the crown jewel of the catalog, although he enjoys it all...
smells like flowers
Went to Solid Sound last year with a Wilco newbie, who I tried to indoctrinate by sharing all my faves... (ST, YHF, AGIB) but she surprised me by liking W(TA) the most. Most immediately accessible, I guess? It's still never gotten under my skin, but to each her own...
