kencoomerislockedinmybasement
Good show. Weird show. Good show.
bböp
Someone else has probably done this already, but a quick Google search reveals that the mayor of Cedar Rapids is a guy named Ron Corbett and he apparently has five kids--four boys and a girl, judging by their names. The oldest is 17 and that's one of the boys, so it seems that the girl who disrupted the show tonight wasn't telling the truth about being the mayor's daughter (big surprise). Preferred B
Yeah, I heard her (sitting in the seat directly behind me) asking, "Is that me?" after Jeff said he was dedicating the song to the mayor's daughter, but I was kind of hoping it was true anyway. Thanks for the sleuthing, P. I always love "So Much Wine," but sometimes I get the feeling that people who aren't familiar with it don't get that it really isn't a funny song. It was bound to get some appreciative laughs after that dedication, though. Of course, the "Via Chicago" laughs were somewhat mysterious.
WilcoOfTheDay
Damn, I was hoping to start some bad press for the CR mayor. Got some good laughs from Tweedy about her, but glad she eventually left so we could move on. Good set list, liked the new song live. I was never NOT obsessed, but back to being more than mildly obsessed with Mr. Tweedy.
WilcoOfTheDay
Via Chicago laughs = The girl sitting beside me started laughing hysterically at the first line (I dreamed about killing you again last night). After everyone around her didn't, she said "oh, this is a real song?!?" Newbies
H.Stone
Thanks for the recap. The "Is Glenn here?" bit is really funny...except that the mayor's daughter sullied it. Clearly this show wasn't on the dry campus.

terrapin
Via Chicago laughs = The girl sitting beside me started laughing hysterically at the first line (I dreamed about killing you again last night). After everyone around her didn't, she said "oh, this is a real song?!?" Newbies Why is it that someone's honest reaction to a lyric is wrong because "everyone around her didn't" react in the same way in which she did? I've always found a lot of dark humor in Via Chicago, and that first line works nicely on a variety of levels. The Handsome Family songs live in the macabre too -- there's humor in So Much Wine. Do we want to "correct" her emotional response to a loaded lyric simply because it's not received with the same reverence we've accorded to it and then call her a "newbie"? Man, tough crowd, I'd say. WilcoOfTheDay
Come on, are you serious terrapin? I was obviously not being serious. I was just explaining the laughter. Tough crowd, yourself, I'd say.
deepseacatfish
I was pretty stoked about this show, ignoring the mayor's daughter issues, "In A Future Age" & "Mountain Bed" were awesome to hear, "So Much Wine" was perfect for the moment (and an awesome song to boot), and I am always happy to hear "Laminated Cat/Not For the Season." Plus I had seats right in the middle of the front row, so had a great view. The opening band Snowblink was actually better than I expected, nothing phenomenal, but pretty enjoyable set. winterland121072
A quick drive from madison (3 hours) and we were at hotelvetro... Show started out well, but as noted, as jeff sang, "dreamed about killing you again..." the crowd burst into laughter. My impression was that the crowd found irony or something in jeff saying this to the crowd. Jeff asked why people laughed, someone said chicago is funny in iowa, jeff retorted, "not as funny as iowa is in chicago..." Here is my take on the mayor's daughter event - I was aisle two rows behind her...As noted, during passenger side as he sang "spill my beer," a loud bottle fell and jeff laughed. After the song Jeff sarcastically asked if Glen was here. The Mayor's daughter started pointing at the person sitting next to her and saying, "he's right here...he's here...he's to big of a pxxxxy to say he's here. Glen's my best friend...I'll give you a million dollars..." Funny to hear jeff say, "now we know who you are." Jeff had started strumming the opening chords to Born Again and continued thorughout the event. He bantered and she eventually quipped that she was the mayor of cedar rapids' daughter. She swore and the crowdy booed her. Ugly event. went on for about 5 minutes or so. He dedicated So Much Wine to her and stared at her while singing. Initially during So much Wine she was waving her hands in hte air during the song in a trippy / grateful dead spinner kind of manner. She stopped eventually and got up during Jesus and left. The crowd cheered. Ugh. She came back at the end of acuff rose with no fanfare. througout the rest of the show several bottles were dropped. Beyond that jeff was in prime form. Highlight for me was Wilco the song. Not my favorite song, but seeing the complex fingering was impressive. He nailed it and it was a request. Made me appreciate the song a bit more. seemed to me that jeff didn't enjoy himself as much. the sound system was a bit strained at times with distortion - anyone else notice that? the stage right speakers? Madison was a completely different show. The crowd was nearly silent, here it was rowdy - a good rowdy mainly with a touch of ugly. Easily worth the drive...wish he did more shows like this. iamnotjerry
It was a memorable event, anytime one gets to spend time with Jeff Tweedy in an environment like the Englert, it is a Win Win!Review of 3/30 Show

Mr. Heartbreak
Thanks for all the reviews and setlists, bbop. I have been pretty fanatical about writing down setlists ever since my first Dead concerts in the early 80s, so I always like seeing what's being played at shows, and your detailed reviews add a lot of color.
