Synthesizer Patel
I'm confused. Is everyone even talking about the same thing? I think the people that say that art is only as good as the one perceiving it are usually trying to justify the fact that they like something pretty crappy. Whether you like something actually has little bearing on the quality of the art. It just happens to be your preference. For instance, I can recognize that there are many talented jazz musicians who have made some very fine music. But I don't really like to listen to jazz. That doesn't mean that jazz music is not good art. The converse of that is also true. I enjoy watching The Big Bang Theory. I find it entertaining and a pretty good sitcom. But I would never argue that I find it to be great art or a pinnacle of the medium. exactly. i'm going to stop now - my head hurts.
Atticus
the only thing you can say is that their opinion is inherently invalid, and therefore worthless. when she's not selling immigrant babies, Speed Racer is saying that opinions are inherently valid, not invalid. bleedorange
I think the fact that you think anyone needs to justify liking something that you or anyone else thinks is "crappy" (I realize in your world it IS crappy, not that you THINK it's crappy) conclusively answers your first question as "no" huh? So, to use an earlier example, Thomas Kinkade paintings are not "crappy"? Everything has artistic merit as long as someone likes it?
Guest Speed Racer
and when you don't like things and yet still see value in them, what happens then? or is that not possible? I go, "I don't like that, but it has value," and then I go grab a burrito. It's not like we're trying to stick a human into a stapler here; I don't know why you think this is difficult. Atticus
isn't artistic merit reflected in the fact that the art has fans?
Guest Speed Racer
when she's not selling immigrant babies, Speed Racer is saying that opinions are inherently valid, not invalid. I'm mostly in the business of smuggling adults. The babies are really messy. Just FYI.
Atticus
isn't artistic merit reflected in the fact that the art has fans? and doesn't it just become "good" art when the fans of it don't annoy the piss out of you?
broc
If that were the case then every single one of us would feel like ralphing when Nels solos during Ashes. That's one of the funniest things I've read on this forum in ages. And I agree.... Nels Cline - Mr Brown Note
tinnitus photography
can someone please grab my burrito?

bleedorange
isn't artistic merit reflected in the fact that the art has fans? No, I think there is more to it than that.
jff
and doesn't it just become "good" art when the fans of it don't annoy the piss out of you? That would mean Wilco concerts are often a place to hear shitty art.
Guest Speed Racer
No. Then why do people keep raving about W(TA)?
jff
Then why do people keep raving about W(TA)? I don't know what you mean.
lamradio
I think talent and skill must be present to classify art as being good art. After that, it's completely a matter opinion whether someone likes it or not. Nels Cline is an incredibly talented and skilled guitar player, although I recognize that some people don't like him at all...
Guest Speed Racer
I don't know what you mean. I know, right? Kind of a lame album.

Guest Speed Racer
also, so you put someone in front of some speakers and play them a Nels Cline solo once. they don't like it. you play it to them 50 times, and there opinion changes. That trick must not work on lesbians because I've heard Leave Me Like You Found Me over 50 times and it still makes me curse my working ears.
Atticus
this was all a lot easier when we just enjoyed wilco on ction's terms. before he moderately left.
lamradio
That trick must not work on lesbians because I've heard Leave Me Like You Found Me over 50 times and it still makes me curse my working ears. If you've taken the time to listen to it 50 times, it can't be that bad..
Guest Speed Racer
If you've taken the time to listen to it 50 times, it can't be that bad.. If I start an album, I won't get up to skip something.

bleedorange
I listen to full albums, too. I don't skip any songs.
