As a life long NYC area resident I got to say I have had many great pizzas. None though have blown me out of the water. As an aside I am attempting to spend a few days in Chicago later this year to give Chicago pizza a good fair chance (what are the must haves?)...Also the pizza I had in Rome was blah...

But what exactly is okonomiyaki? At its base is batter (made from flour, eggs, water, cabbage and cooking stock) paired with your desired combination of cheese, vegetables, fish and meat. In the city of Osaka, where the most popular version of the dish originated, all the ingredients are cooked together (by grilling on both sides) before the pizza is topped with a sweet brown sauce, mayonnaise, katsuobushi (bonito flakes) and aonori (seaweed flakes).

Now that may be the most spectacular tasting thing on the planet... but that's not pizza.

Best pizza in Chicago is Lou Malnati's.

Gotta get a pan pizza with the butter crust, spinach, mushrooms, and garlic. It's spectacular.

They have locations all over the area, but the original is on Lincoln Ave. in Lincolnwood, just a few blocks north of the city limits.

Every pizza has it's place. I don't think there's any reason one region should have supremacy over the dough/sauce/cheese combination. There's a lot of shitty pizza in Chicago, too, and some damn fine ones in the Twin Cities. Hell, I don't mind frozen pizza half the time.

I crave different pizzas as if they were different foods, much like I don't consider Diet Coke and Coke the same drink.

Agreed. Sometimes I crave a cracker-crust pizza. And, on that tip, I loves me some Imo's (St. Louis-style), with sausage.

Too bad we don't get any of that around here.

Chicago-style pizza is nowhere near as cracked up as people from Chicago make it oput to be. It is good, though. NY-style is better. New Haven style is the best.

CO-style sucks. It's waaay too doughy. F-in' Beaujeaoax or however they spell it.

If I'm in the mood for Chicago deep dish, there's nothing better. But that's once every few years, not something I normally crave.

I'm a big fan of CPK and CA-style pizza in general. Medium crust; chewy & crunchy, flavorful sauces, creative toppings. The Wild Mushroom at CPK is always fantastic.

I have yet to taste a frozen pizza that tastes decent - i.e., not of plastic or other chemical enhancers.

They sell them at the Whole Foods near me. It's damn good.

Cracker crust.

Although, I don't know if they ship it out of the Chicago area.

Damn tasty, though.

Actually I like the pizza in Boston the best. NYC is pretty good though. Chicago has very little decent thin crust pizza. I eat deep dish, but mostly after all these years I am sick of it. I think it is overblown really. Malnati does make good deep dish however.

Just had Aurelio's last night. Not thin-crust, really -- more a medium crust. Still, really tasty.

This is so true- it's all cut into squares on crackers?! What the heck- so not good. I agree with the above comment on New Haven style pizza, although I've only ever had it here in Chicago at Piece.

the shitty thin crust cut into squares is the worst. I think the best places in Chicago to get real pizza are, Santullo's, Luigi's (on Clark in Lincoln Park) and Piece.

ha, thanks Winston on the Milwaukee pizza shout-out. We do have good pizza here but of course, overshadowed by nearby Chicago and our stereotype of beer-brats-cheese.

Classic Slice in Bayview is amazing as well as Mama DeMarini's in Bayview...not to be confused with Dom & Phil's DeMarini's.

Zaffiro's on the East Side seems to win awards all the time. Yes, cracker-thin crust style at Zaffiro's is very very good!!!
