bböp
Even though I seriously doubt he'll ever see this thread, I figure it's worth starting one anyway. Consider it a new Nels appreciation thread, if nothing else... Somebody should go find and post a link to video of one of the recent performances of "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" by the Flaming Lips with Mr. Cline from New Year's Eve/Day. Psychedelic heaven! And if you happen to be in New York City this week or next, Nels has a show with the Singers on Friday night at Le Poisson Rouge. Next weekend at Rockwood Music Hall, he's reprising his Pillow Wand duo with Thurston Moore (1/13) as well as playing in a tribute to Jim Hall (1/15) as part of the New York Guitar Festival's Alternative Guitar Summit. Then it's back to that band...
lamradio
playing in a tribute to Jim Hall (1/15) as part of the New York Guitar Festival's Alternative Guitar Summit. I really hope tapers are present at that one.
bböp
Incidentally, Nels' ability to fit seamlessly into so many different scenes and play and assimilate such a wide range of styles are a couple of the traits I most admire about him. And why I think he's such an ideal fit for Wilco, fwiw.
Albert Tatlock
Well, I think he's the only one older than me, so that makes me feel better about being a fanboy (though a picky one).
Magnetized
Nels is amazing and an integral part of what makes Wilco great. I think everyone's getting on board with that now. A while back there were some Nels haters (I remember complaints about "overplaying") but he totally makes some songs, and even on the songs that don't feature him, he adds beautiful texture and complexity. Plus, he's an absolute gentleman and a lovely guy. Happy birthday!
JAK2112
In honor of his birthday, i'm going to share a great Pre-Wilco involvement video of Nels that i found a few weeks ago

calvino
Cool. Is this the Yo Miles band he was invlolved in for a while? From the link: (I never realized he played with Liebman, before).Guitar solo of Nels Cline during a concert of Mark Isham "silent way project" with Mark Isham (trumpet), Dave Liebman (soprano sax), Nels Cline (guitar), Pete Maunu (guitar) Doug Lunn (bass) and Michael Barsimanto (drums) at San Sebastian, 2000. jff
From the link: (I never realized he played with Liebman, before). I guess that means Nels has done at least two Miles-centric bands. Thanks for the info.
JAK2112
This one's less notable for Nels' playing and more so for his acting and dancing, but thought i should share one more for those who aren't that familiar with the Geraldine Fibbers
kidsmoke
Nels, we love ya, baby! Keep bringing the joyous rock!
tinnitus photography
this was my first introduction to Nels:http://www.discogs.com/Nels-Cline-Trio-Silencer/release/2368813
jff
this was my first introduction to Nels:http://www.discogs.c...release/2368813 That's a great one. Maybe my favorite of the Trio releases. My introduction to Nels was a Mike Watt show promoting his Ball Hog or Tugboat album. I was just blown away, amd went on a several year (pre-internet) hunt for Nels cds after that. The first one I was able to find was Destroy All Nels Cline and it took me probably five years to find it.
lamradio
It really is something to see when Nels is without Wilco.

I guess they were worried that kids would try it at home?
bböp
Here's one video of the Lips and Nels doing "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" from a few days ago:
SarahC
I'm only 45 seconds in on that video and it's incredibly epic. Wow. Happy birthday to Nels!
