Standing vs sitting

Recommended Posts

Interesting to see how many show reviews mention how much standing or sitting there is. Tempe was my second Wilco show in a row I was asked to sit down. First time was a few years ago in San Diego during the first song and I was pretty excited but my section took a vote apparently and chose to sit. Girl behind me asked us to sit so I got up on top of my seat and danced for a little then lost the will to have fun. In Tempe last week we were in the balcony and sat until the encore when everyone got up, then sat back down leaving just us. Oh well. Couple my parents' age (60's?) asked us to sit down and I just couldn't not get sarcastic. "You want to wish her a happy birthday? THANKS! We drove all the way from San Diego!" If we hadn't sat for so long, I might not've got sarcastic but....

Having posted this a couple of days ago, Jeff's comment last night was even more hilarious:

Well, it looks like we've divided our audience.....the standers and the sitters (huge applause). I'm not going to choose a side. It's like a red state/blue state thing. I know where *I* stand!" (HUGE applause)

Pretty sure it was right before "Can't Stand It", which made it all the funnier when they got to the chorus.

We kept laughing throughout the night as almost the whole crowd would stand and sit for the slower/upbeat songs. Unlike any show i'd ever been to but not unlike my Bar Mitzvah.

I was at a Mountain Goats show last night at a bar, and I would have given anything to be able to sit down! After working on my feet all day, it was pure torture to be standing around til 12:30 at night. Yes, I'm pretty old. But my ass will never be sitting down at a Wilco show if I can help it! You just can't feel the music the same way, imo.

I was at the Tempe show and stood most of the time (row C - 3rd from stage in Pit). I felt bad because right behind us (but a short distance away) was the wheelchair row. YES, they kept that row as a wheelchair row, EVEN during a rock concert. (Normally, they do broadway shows there). I felt bad, and did occasionally sit down, but overall, it's not our fault that's where they decided to have the wheelchair seating. Am I going to hell for this? Maybe. Do I regret standing and dancing? No. Tough call.

That's great.

I remember getting shit from a guy at a show in Victoria, BC because I stood up during Broken Arrow (he deemed this song unstandworthy, I suppose). My American companions were confused when I apologized to him, not understanding that in Canada,"Sorry" = "Eat it!"

At Tempe, my section (10 rows back from stage on the far right (Pat's side), everyone immediately stood when they took the stage, then immediatley sat down for One Sunday Morning and then stood again for Art of Almost and stayed standing the entire rest of the show. I thought it was great.

Third night of LA was much more of a sitting crowd, with just one or two folks braving the desire to stand and dance and that lasted about the first half or 2/3rds of the show. As they started rocking out, more people stood and it stayed that way through the end. I'd prefer to stand all night, but I was okay with how it went.

Its nice to know Jeff prefers audiences who stand, it feels, to me, like the audience is more engaged and participating when they do.

Well, I sure don't want to see Wilco moving to huge arena venues, like U2 and Springsteen.

I much prefer a space like the 9:30 Club where you maintain the lively, sweaty, standing-only vibe, but for whatever reason, Wilco seems to also enjoy playing at the beautiful old theatres with seating, which is always going to lead to a standing/sitting debate. I'm glad Jeff weighed in on the issue, but I do wish they'd somehow make this preference known at the start of a show. I think a few words from the stage at or near the beginning of the show would do wonders. Something along the lines of "Y'all don't have to stay seated--you can stand and dance if you wanna." There must be some reason they don't do this, but I don't know what it is. Venue restrictions?

having been to every wilco 930 show (i think?) i certainly love me some 930 but the air can get thick in there when they oversell it but ive got my spot ive been going to for 15 years and it never fails me but i think my left ear has been damaged from it.

tipitinas was a great place to see Wilco but you cant beat Charlottesville Pavilion because you can sit stand or do whatever you want and they dont really give a rats ass what anyone does.I think corin wants the place run that way. If you want to be at the bands feet you can do it and walk up basically at showtime. and leave and come back.

Any thoughts regarding the "standing vs. shitting" debate?

Standing or sitting, I do love me some Mountain Goats.
