For gogo (and anyone else interested)...

I tallied up the different songs played at the three Bay Area shows and I come up with 56 over the course of the three nights. So just one shy of the LA trifecta. Interestingly, it would have been exactly the same if they had played You Never Know in San Jose. It was on the printed setlist for that night, but got cut due (presumably) to time issues...

And seven songs were played all three nights in the Bay Area, by my count:

Art Of Almost

I Might

Born Alone

Dawned On Me

Whole Love

Impossible Germany

A Shot in the Arm

Thank you!! I guess I can be OK with one short of LA. :)

I'd say this was definitely my favorite of the three Bay Area shows. Tweedy said that the venue was so beautiful (it really is :wub) that they were going to play all "tender and beautiful" ones last night, and they totally came through on that, to start off with anyway. Muzzle of Bees/Via Chicago/acoustic Spiders all in a row just knocked my socks off. And then it got so much bouncier and sing-alongier as they night went on, it was really maybe a perfect set list for me. :dance

What's the word on White Denim? How's their show?

I've enjoyed White Denim 2 of the 3 times I've seen them now! Sunday night in SF they went a little nuts with an extended jam, which is totally not my thing (although several people I talked to said they liked that night the best, so I guess it's all just a personal preference thing). But in San Jose and Oakland they played some cool songs, bouncy and guitary and almost funky at times.

I wouldn't characterize it as loose and goofy - I thought it was tight and dynamic. Lots of stage banter, which was totally the opposite of the more workman-like and schedule-conscious performance in SF on Saturday. And no one who was there for the encore will ever need to ask for more cowbell again, thanks to the masterful roadie bell-work.

That's my kind of encore! When Wilco decide to do it, they can out-Stones even the 1972 the Rolling Stones on any given night, I do believe. By that I mean play the hell out of some straight up Chuck Berry-inspired rock 'n' roll!

That encore is the King(pin) of all encores, reminds me of the 1st night at the UIC in '09:

You Never Know

Heavy Metal Drummer

Just a Kid

Kingpin

Monday

Outtasite

Hoodoo Voodoo

I'm a Wheel

That one was great, but this oakland show seemed like one to remember, wish they brought some of this stuff out on the east coast

Thanks for the review. They have an instrumental on their latest album that segue's from the previous track and I wonder if that's what they played. Maybe you're already familiar, but if not, they are "Burnished" and "At the Farm", respectively. Anyways, I've been curious about their live shows. Thanks for replying gogo and enjoy the Wilco out there on the West Coast.

I guess I should qualify my "loose and goofy" assessment. Obviously it depends on your perspective, but I certainly wasn't saying it was a bad performance in any way.

The mood on stage just seemed a bit silly at points, like when Nels had some sort of inopportune pedal problem at the end of Via that basically wrecked his solo and could only kind of sheepishly shrug at Jeff. Or when Jeff went over to Pat during Nels' Impossible Germany solo and whispered something amusing. Or when Jeff flubbed the "Have to keep my mind out of this" line in "Hate It Here." :lol

Or for that matter, Jeff's whole spiel during Kingpin when he said to the crowd, "Aw, you remembered" to scream after 'How can I?' "That's adorbs," he said. He then went on to have the audience members try to "lovingly sigh" at each other instead of screaming during the next pass before quickly nixing that idea. And finally, he recounted the "flipping the bird" incident from last week's Wiltern show and had us all flip the bird so he could take a picture with an iPhone.

Anyway, I consider all of that evidence of goofiness and a loose, free-wheeling sort of show — and I haven't even mentioned the shirtless roadie striking again — so that's mostly why I wrote what I wrote above. I personally wouldn't characterize it as a tight performance though it certainly was dynamic in a sense. Mostly, it was just a very fun set...warts and all. :thumbup

Oh how I wish MT and I would have stayed for one more show. I will keep my fingers crossed we will get a similar set next week in Chicago. Gogo, we missed you and your sisters at karaoke on Sunday. Next bay area shows you won't be off the hook. :-)

We're sorry we didn't go! Although, none of us can carry a tune, so maybe it was just as well. :) Next time though, definitely! Have a great time next week, kisses to you and MT. :cheekkiss

Is Wilco playing a secret show in Chicago next week? I don't see any Chicago show on their schedule.

Oops - I meant Seattle - how silly of me. I never post on here and I decided too on whim whilst being slightly distracted by my 4 year old! I guess distraction = inaccurate info!

Perhaps is also means that I'd sure love to see the band in Chicago... a trip to plan sometime soon.

Loved the Fox show over the Warfield show! The band was excellent both shows as always but seemed looser and seemed to be having a bit more fun in Oakland. Maybe people would say they were sloppier but I like that there felt to be more innerplay between band members.

The S.F. Warfield show felt like the band was going through the motions a bit and lacked something. Don't get me wrong it was incredibly polished and controlled set but maybe a bit too much so since there seemed to be some tension on stage in S.F.

The Warfield is a dump. Sound was good but it didn't envelope you or have the percussiveness of the Fox. I had never been to either venue before so didn't have any pre-conceived notions but the Fox is a much nicer and better sounding venue then the Warfield which has crappy (narrow) seats and the sound felt like it was just coming from the stage but not projecting out and filling the space like the Fox.

Both great shows I just preferred the show in Oakland. Can't wait to see them back home at the Paramount in Seattle!
