Wilco — 7/18/12, Vienna, VA (Filene Center at Wolf Trap National Park)

Recommended Posts

Another very muggy, but very fun evening! As promised, the band played mostly songs they hadn't done the previous night so that those who attended both shows got a pretty good sampling of the current state of the band over the two gigs.

I'm sure someone will break it down by album or by figure out the stats on how many different songs were played over the two nights or whatever people do, but suffice it to say that if you're anything more than a casual fan — and chances are if you're reading this, you probably are — and are able to, it's always worth it to get to both nights. :thumbup

Personally, for the most part, I preferred Night 2's selection of songs. I mean, Laminated Cat, Candyfloss and Dreamer alone made it a stellar show, and then add in songs like Kamera (which actually doesn't get played too often these days) and Can't Stand It and you've got the makings of a fine evening. I heard that Red-Eyed>I Got You>Outtasite was on the printed setlist again, but got cut again for time reasons. That would have made for a pretty sweaty conclusion. But as Jeff said, "We can't play all night. The park rangers would arrest us." Once again, the band finished up right at curfew at 10:55 p.m. with a rollicking Dreamer. :dancing

At least we got Airline To Heaven — of note...Nels didn't play lap steel on the song for the first time I can remember, instead using a bottleneck on one of his regular electrics — and Christ For President tonight. A friend pointed out that they always seem to play Christ in the Washington area, obviously as a nod to "that capitol town" and the political scene therein. (I suppose Capitol City would also fit into that scenario, but that wasn't on the docket this time around.) After the mini-Guthrie start to the encore, in one of the few comments he made all evening, Jeff said, "Thanks, Woody, for writing songs that mean as much now as when you wrote them."

Other than that, Jeff didn't say too much of note. Relatively early on, he asked if he should call the crowd "Virginians." There was, predictably, a mixed response. So, explaining that he didn't want to say the wrong thing, he simply offered up a "Woo...Wolf Trap!" So I'll echo that. Woo...Wolf Trap! It's kind of a weird place with some of their rules and relative strictness, but also is a pretty nice venue for a concert. About as intimate as a shed could be, I guess, and with quite good sound to boot IMHO.

So anyway, this was the complete setlist — as played — for Night 2 at Wolf Trap:

Misunderstood

Art Of Almost

I Might

I Am Trying To Break Your Heart

Born Alone

Side With The Seeds

Spiders (Kidsmoke) (acoustic arrangement)

Impossible Germany

A Shot in the Arm

This was a fun, fun show! First off, I love a show that starts out with Misunderstood. Then some semi-rare songs like Kamera, I Must Be High, Candyfloss (!!!--my request), I Can't Stand It and Airline as the encore opener--well, I couldn't have been happier.

Well yeah, I could have been a LOT happier with better seats. Both nights I was was off to the side. Night 1 Nels side, night 2, Pat. But I got up close for the encore, and tomorrow night in Charlottesville I control my own destiny, since it's GA. Hello, line.

Wilco makes me so happy!

I thought tonights show was pretty damn great. I feel like the shows I've attended the past few years have been fairly formulaic (still awesome but..) due to the promotion of albums. Tonight was different. Kind of throwback while at the same time having some new twists to old(er) songs, plus the Guthrie covers. Not sure if I like the "different" version of Kidsmoke more than the more rocking version, but it was cool. Another song, can't remember which, also had a faster tempo and a little lower decibels than usual. Nels was scorching from the get go. Jeff was in a great mode (which isn't always the case), and his voice was flawless. I haven't been keeping up with any setlists so I don't know how it compares to shows on this tour, but this was a really solid show.

yeah it was a good show. wilco shows dont quite excite me like they used to, but i was pretty damn happy when they came out and started with misunderstood. this was my 5th wilco show, and i think there ended up being 7/8 songs they played that i hadn't seen them do before, so moments like "oh my god, candy floss!" made the whole show worth it. setlist overall was very good for a semi new album promo tour. wolf trap brings out a lot of casual fans (not an insult by any means. wolf trap crowds have always been great in my opinion) so i imagine that played into the setlist a bit. all in all, fun show.

that being said i couldnt help but silently hope that the band sees a significant change or two in the near future. this lineup can certainly rip it up live, but it'd be very interesting to see the lineup evolve somehow. maybe not kick anyone out of the band, but have nels or someone else sit out a few songs each night. some of those am/bt rockers and ballads just don't need three guitars or two keyboardists to play 'em. treat the band lineup as more of a collective i guess, where theres no pressure for all 6 wilco dudes to play on every song. won't happen, but i can dream.

id also really like to see them do a whole tour of stuff like the acoustic spiders arrangement. i know not everyone likes it, but i really dig it and i think it'd be awesome to reinvent the back catalogue a bit with a stripped down tour. i know tweedy does it in his (fucking incredible) solo shows, but full band acoustic is different. they did mini acoustic sets during the evening with wilco tour, and it was a nice change of pace.

And I wouldn't mind getting to see John sing "It's Just That Simple" again either. It's been quite a while. I love his reassuring enthusiasm and sweetness up there. It'd be nice to give him a turn in the spotlight again.

also lee ranaldo was fantastic. i was excited to see him since i've probably missed my shot at seeing SY live, and he delivered. i liked his recent solo album a lot more than expected, and the songs sounded great live. i was kinda hoping hed come out during wilcos set, but curfews like wolf traps tend to limit the late set stuff like that. maybe later in the tour, like nick lowe last year

i got lucky as hell and heard that at my first wilco show (december 2008). but yeah, agreed. great song and it'd be nice to see john get that moment in the spotlight more often

I would love this setlist tonight in Charlottesville. I was worried about them playing back-to-back nights and this potentially happening. I REALLY want to see the re-arranged Spiders and Laminated Cat and now I don't see that happening. :ohwell

I know they don't have a set "pattern" or necessarily alternate songs, but I would feel much better about my chances had they pulled these out Tuesday night instead.

C'mon Wilco, PROVE ME WRONG!!!

Chris, whatever they do tonight you know it's gonna be great. Both of those songs have been in heavy rotation so I'll bet you'll get one or the other, maybe both.

I just have a really good feeling about this show tonight!

Oh I know Diane! We all know they never disappoint but it's easy to get selfish when the reality for me personally is that with two small children my days of trying to see multiple shows are on hold for a while. I can assure you that they could play Misunderstood 23 times and I would be delighted!

Again no songs from Wilco the album, not complainin', just sayin. Some great highlights were Kamera, Candyfloss, I Must be High, Christ for Prez, Art of Almost, Laminated Cat, Dreamer. Overall I think I like the first night better, maybe I liked the setlist more or the overall energy, plus I had better seats night 1, but glad I saw both shows, and some great and relatively rarely played songs each night.

i feel ya on this. not sure if different lineup or "collective" is the answer, but maybe guests sitting in, and maybe they could play a few covers (none played these two shows). My friend who only came to night two said the setlist was kind of "wilco's greatest hits" and i thought the same about night 1. They are a terrific band, never disappoint, but they may be at a bit of a plateau (or maybe i am after seeing 8 shows in three yrs). That said, the thought of not seeing them for more than a year (supposedly they will record and not play live much next year) is a bummer. Also, they really could ditch I'm the Man who loves you, Walken, Hate it Here, HMD, HSD once in awhile (Neither HMD not HSD played last night, encroyable! a good start! They were both played night one of course).

This was a great show. Very muggy, but not nearly as hot as I'd feared. I've seen this band 6 times now since 2007, and this was probably the second-best of those, with only the "Evening With" show at Strathmore topping it. Great energy, great setlist, great performance.

The sound was fantastic, and the band seemed to be in great spirits despite the visible empty sections in the pavilion. I also appreciate that they got in as much music as possible, with Lee Renaldo starting right on time and what seemed like short breaks between him and Wilco and between their main set and the encore. A little more banter is always nice, but they packed in as many songs (and good ones!) as they could.

This show was fantastic, and I was lucky enough to pull front-row seats a few nights before the show. The band just keeps getting better. If you feel like they've reached a plateau, or they're just not doing it for you anymore, I suggest sitting out for a year or two. The last time I saw them was in 2010, and this time they blew me away.

FYI, Spiders has not been rearranged or reinterpreted, at least not the way most people in this thread think. The acoustic version is the original version of the song, which appeared in the band's sets as early as spring 2002. Check out 4/27/02 for a good soundboard source, if memory serves. The acoustic Spiders was the first song I saw Wilco do live, on 10/14/02, again, if memory serves. They've been my favorite band since.

I can confirm that Red-Eyed-->I Got You and Outtasite were on the setlist to close the show, but were not played.

gabe those early versions of spiders are what igrew up on and 10.14 was some epic wilco

Like.

It's funny that there are now people on this board who have no memory of the disappointment many of us felt when we first heard the album version of Spiders. That version has grown on me in the live setting, but I'm overjoyed that the original has returned.

Then again, I never saw a show with Jay Bennett, Ken Coomer, etc. Not exactly an old timer myself. There was a guy next to me at the show who first saw Wilco in 1996 at the original 930 Club.

Must admit, somtimes, I think the same thing about linclink - a person with same member name as linclink plays the same role(promote live releases and the band in general) on another board I frequent - not a complaint, just an observation.
