Turnips
This might have been covered at length so forgive me, but I was watching the YHF doc again the other night and the only thing that's stuck in my head is Jay doing My Darling. It's such a pretty song and IMO Jeff's vocal on Sunmerteeth just doesnt do I justice like Jay's. Does Wilco ever play this live? I'm guessing no, and so is there some kind of weight to the song that makes it inappropriate now? Curious about this...
Shakespeare In The Alley
this was always one of my least favorite summerteeth tracks. its not bad by any means, but it doesnt do much for me. and jays version, like a lot of his solo songs, falls completely flat for me. Turnips
well it's not a very "wilco" song right? it seems more of a solo singer/songwriter type track, and maybe too ballady for Wilco in general. But I really think Jay nails it. Lyrics and melody are heartbreaking
linclink
a live version for you...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ds_ZU0oXxM
Turnips
yeah see that version is too twangy, I dig the more minimal interpretation and i guess since Jay composed it, I'm feeling the authenticity of his own version
Vacant Horizon
a live version for you...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ds_ZU0oXxM that was a great show. did anyone see the giant turtle on the table during the interview? i hope he didn't fall off:)
choo-choo-charlie
I think it's a sweet tune. There are better tracks on Summerteeth, but it fits in nicely among the group.
remphish1
When I saw Jay solo back in the day he played My Darling and Venus Stop the Train live in his sets!
lost highway
I could put it in a box with 'Leave Me Like You Found Me', 'I Thought I Held You' and ship it to Abu Dhabi. But that's what's great about Wilco, different people find beauty in different tunes.... even Jay Bennett's rendition. More power to you. On a related note, anyone ever here what Jay did with Car's Can't Escape? Not my favorite, but again, someone out there found some glory in it.
remphish1
I like the music in I though I heald you..Lyrics not so much but I would still like to hear it live one day!
choo-choo-charlie
Aw, I like "I Thought I Held You." In fact, I don't skip any tracks on A.M.
bleedorange
Aw, I like "I Thought I Held You." In fact, I don't skip any tracks on A.M. Me too. I always really liked "I'm like a songwriter/You're the reason I've run out/Run out of metaphors." I also like the Summerteeth version of My Darling. I can never decide if it's just a sweet lullaby or a promise to a young child that the problems/divorce of the parents has nothing to do with her and they want to reassure her that she will always be loved. A little bittersweet and the production adds to it.

A little bittersweet and the production adds to it. I always liked the idea that Tweedy wrote most of the A.M. songs as a guy on a couch with an acoustic guitar. I like the raw approach to everything. My Darling could probably be both, considering the emotional place Tweedy was in at the time of Summerteeth. I also like the slowed-down synths from "Nothingsevergonnastandinmywayagain" in the coda of My Darling, then the big wash of sound right at the end...and then "When You Wake Up Feeling Old" comes swingin' in, bouncy and happy... worldrecordplayer
Is there a complete version of that Sessions show circulating? And once again, any time I watch video of that era of Wilco, the first thought that pops into my head: what a difference Glenn makes.

And once again, any time I watch video of that era of Wilco, the first thought that pops into my head: what a difference Glenn makes. Video or audio? I think there's a full video somewhere -- and the full audio is out there. It's actually one of the better recordings from that year. I think Ken's work was great while he was in Wilco. In Jeff's words around the time of Ken's dismissal, "it's not that Ken isn't a good drummer, it's that he isn't the right drummer anymore..."
Choo Choo Charlie
Jay's rendition of My Darling on the DVD is great. Don't dislike the Summerteeth version either. I always thought it was quite sad that Wilco didn't pay a proper tribute to Jay in the form of a concert. Re. Glenn - I much prefer his mini-kit work with Loose Fur. He's a great drummer who I think is even better when faced with less things to hit! Saying that - the standing on the drum stool party piece doesn't impress.

I always liked it on Summerteeth.

Turnips
twangy might be the wrong word, I was referring mostly to that descending line between verses. It's nice but I just like the more melancholic vibe with Jay's
