Yeah, I like it.  I'm going to have to spin it a half dozen more times before I can compare it to You Are Not Alone.  The production is gorgeous.  There aren't any songs I dislike.  But I'm still waiting to see if it grabs me as a whole.

I am surprised this thread has so little traffic. This Mavis album is the closest thing Jeff has come to doing a solo album so far, since he plays a wide variety of instruments, wrote a number of songs, and Spenser plays the drums on nearly every track.

She's on NPR's Talk of the Nation right now.  She said some funny things about working with Jeff!  Even impersonated his nasal voice.  Bold!

Listening to her do that made me incredibly happy.  I want video of it!

Interesting way to look at it. I wouldn't have thought of it. Writing songs for somebody else to sing seems quite different from a solo album to me. The Chelsea Walls soundtrack on the other hand would be my pick for the closest things to a solo album from Jeff.

Oh yea,, that's true.  I was kind of kidding about the solo album thing, but he plays a surprising number of different instruments including a variety of keyboards and sings back-up.

I missed the original broadcast of the Talk of the Nation interview but it's available online. Here's the link: http://www.npr.org/2013/06/26/195907958/gospel-legend-mavis-staples-on-sixty-years-of-song

I too listened to the NPR stream of the new album and really enjoyed it. Just ordered it on Amazon today. I suspect the only reason people aren't talking about it more is that there's so darned much to talk about right now, after Solid Sound and before AmericanaramA. It's a good time to be a Wilco fan!

This interview is awesome! I love the Tweedy impressions, haha.

I have been listening to the new Mavis as I got the record in the mail. It was cut by Chris Bellman (one of the best) and sounds very good.

For no good reason, I never bothered to get her previous record.  I've only heard "Can You Get to That" and a few short clips from this record.  Sounds great so far, and I intend to get a copy.

I love that Spencer has become such a great drummer.  He banged on my drums at Lounge Axe in 1997.  How old was he then?  One?  It makes me happy to know that he stuck with it. :badger

It's funny--I watched the Blisters set at Solid Sound with the 18-year-old daughter of my friend. She enjoyed it and thought Spencer was cute but she said "He's really got to do something about that squinched face when he plays." It's true-he's good and his moves are very fluid, but he looks like he's concentrating really, really hard. The kid takes this seriously! Their set was very well received, by the way.

Drummer face.  Mine is more like this :omg  Staring in a zoned out fashion but not actually looking at anything while my hands and feet do their work.  A girl I sort of know accused me of staring at her while I was playing once and it was kind of embarrassing.  I think I've trained myself not to do that quite as much.

This album is pretty good.  Its quite different than her last, more folky and not all the way gospel/soul.  Not sure if that kind of style/production works as well for her, but its still a decent record.

I agree totally.  Her voice is much more subdued than usual, which I get the feeling is a question of age at this point.  Putting her in a more low key musical environment may have been a conscious decision at this point.

I am loving this record (thank you, local library, for having awesome music).  It is really fun, sounds great, and the songs are catchy.  I like when I can remember a song later on and kind of keep enjoying it even when it isn't playing.  Celestial Shores and I Like the Things About Me are among my favorite tracks.  It does seem like a pretty short record though.  I was surprised when it ended.

Me too!  Did you see that the announcement talked about the whole weekend commemorating 75 years of her music?  Or maybe 75th birthday makes more sense.  But anyway, they said special friends and guests!  That could be very, very good.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed!  Also really really hoping the Nickel Creek reunion tour goes through Newport round about July.

Just saw a link to this trailer for the new documentary we knew was coming..."Mavis!"  (not sure I approve of that title, complete with exclamation mark, ouch.)

Cameo by Tweedy and some footage from Newport earlier this year, including dueting with Rachael Price of Lake Street Dive.
