Thankfulness 2013, Part Four: Public Figure

Recommended Posts

Ok, this thankfulness meditation might get a bit tougher. You are probably going to have to search your mind to come up with someone worthy, because let's face it, public figures have a way of getting all their warts thoroughly exposed to scrutiny.

What I mean by a "public figure" is someone who is currently alive and is well enough known that the general public would know the name. I have to admit, this is a tough one for me. I can't think of a lot of public figures...politicians, actors, writers, athletes, religious figures, etc....who are what I consider good and kind and decent people. But I know they do exist! Hence, a bit of a meditation.

So who out there are you honestly thankful to have in the world? Who do you admire and feel grateful about?

I'm going with the Dalai Lama. What a beautiful perspective on life he has, and what a wonderful sense of humor as well.

I love this quote:

"Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible."

-Dalai Lama

George Clooney and Jennifer Lawrence. Both are uber-talented and make smart career choices. He is probably the biggest star in the world and she has shot to superstardom, yet both are still down-to-earth and have a wonderful perspective as to what it means to be hugely famous. (Clooney's interview in Esquire was excellent, by the way.) It's nice to see that in Hollywood.

I'm thankful for Bob Dylan, honestly. I think enough of the general public knows who that is or at least knows the name. Discovering Bob's music totally opened a new door of musical, literary, and melodic exploration for me. Through Bob I've grown to love countless other artists and have ventured into dozens of books that I now love and reread constantly.

Rush Limbaugh.  Ignites my self-righteousness like gasoline.

In all seriousness, probably Bob Dylan.  This is strange because I would never consider him to be my favorite artist, but he is definitely responsible for more of my cuts-like-a-knife songs than anyone else.
