suites
So, I took my son (21) to see ZZ. He loves classic rock (Boston, Dire......). Showtime was 8:00. No opening act. They come on at 8:15 and play till 9:25. WTF. They actually sounded pretty good but the arena had -100 energy (sit down the entire show). I am saying that the venue is the worst venue I was ever at and is a shame because 5 minutes from my house. I heard all shows must end before 10:00 so they can get you in the casino. What a joke. I am pretty sure it is the shortest show I ever went to. No opening act and play for 1:10 min. I checked setlist over the past few months...same exact every night. Happy New Year to all on this Board.
A heart I know by heart
That sucks... I know they have covered 'Casino Queen' in the past... That would've made it a little better

Winston Legthigh
70 minutes of ZZ Top seems about right. Maybe too much even...
thejokeexplained
Boy how times have changed! ZZ Top used to play every New Years eve in Dallas back in the early to mid 80's And those shows were epic! One of the last show i saw on New Years eve 1983 had the Busboys open and ZZ Top didn't hit the stage until 11:30. Oh to be young again!
jff
That's a bummer. ZZ has been on my to-see list, but I might not bother. They typically play the lamest venue in town when they come to Atlanta. I hear the drummer phones it in and only tours so he can play golf on as many courses around the world as possible.
lamradio
70 minutes of ZZ Top seems about right. Maybe too much even... Yeah. Reminds me of when I saw the Ramones. They played a little over a half hour and it was just right. Like one continuous song.
Mr. Heartbreak
I think the only time I have ever seen a headliner play a set that short was Sinéad O'Connor in 1990. She had an international hit with her cover of Nothing Compares 2 U, and I saw her at Great Woods. The show was only 70 minutes or so, but you could tell that the songs were incredibly demanding vocally. Sinéad had some pipes back in the day. The show was short, yeah, but people were walking out of there going, "Wow."
choo-choo-charlie
Are you sure it wasn't this band? (jump to 0:40 mark) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ItZyaOlrb7E
jff
70 minutes of ZZ Top seems about right. Maybe too much even... I recently watched a ZZ Top concert video that was on the one hour range. They played all the best knwon songs, but left out lots of really great album tracks. I could see them doing a great two hour show if their hearts weer in it.

I saw them open for Tom Petty at Summerfest (milwaukee) a couple years ago. I'm guessing they clocked in at right around an hour. It was a great show. All of their 80s hits sound great when played with a skuzzy fuzz, instead of the 80s sheen. Was happy to hear Just Got Paid.

Tweedling
I have been on a huge ZZ kick recently. The first 3 albums haven't left rotation for several months. But the last time I saw them they played about an hour and a half. The drummer could really boogie back in the day but seems to just be bored back there, if you ask me.Certified blues is a great jam. If they ever got interested in doing some older less popular/radio stuff they could be an amazing touring group again.I know so much of their stuff has been over played on the radio for so long but Billy is still one of the great guitarists. He's not fast or real slick but he knows the blues and he can rock and roll with the best of 'em.
Atticus
Such a unique tone.
Mr. Heartbreak
Maybe when they get old, they'll start breaking out some cool obscurities. Kinda like Paul McCartney on this last tour, doing "All Together Now" and "For the Benefit of Mr. Kite."Wait, aren't these dudes already ancient as hell? They look like that guy on Duck Dynasty. Beltmann
This July they are headlining our county fair (southeastern Wisconsin, in the middle of farmland). I might go. It's a five-minute drive.
jff
Billy is the only guitarist Jimi endorsed*and Duane was around at the time. What do you mean by "endorse"? Jimi spoke highly of a number of other guitarists, including Clapton and Terry Kath, but that may be different than whatever his endorsement of Billy Gibbons was.
