Winston Legthigh
^ The best.I did not know this: Brother Theodore provided the voice of Gollum in Rankin/Bass's Hobbit cartoon.
Sir Stewart
Oh wow, I didn't know that either. My brother (not named Theodore) took a film class and he came up somehow, and it turned out the instructor used to work for Brother Theodore when he had his one-man show in NYC in the 70s. He gave my brother a playbill from the show. Looked nuts, of course. I remember his very early appearances on Letterman (brown set), and 10 year old me thinking it was Mel Brooks in disguise. Winston Legthigh
I remember being very upset around the Andy Kaufman / Jerry Lawler brouhaha. It was very unsettling for me. I was 12 or 13 around then.
bjorn_skurj
Yes, I do remember Letterman's morning show and wow, been a LONG time since I thought about Brother Theodore. I remember one night being heavily under the influence of mescaline (early '86 I am guessing) and watching Letterman and being convinced he was out of his mind on mescaline too. NoJ
Letterman featured an article describing the arrest of a kid at my university who was arrested for stealing a burrito. He shoved it down his pants because he was drunk or something. Flash forward 29 years (um, yikes) and it turns out I know the guy.

NoJ
The Super Dave era was kinda fun. About the last time I watched DL too. What was that, circa 1986-87ish?
uncool2pillow
Behold the genius of Brother Theodore. Good stuff. I also loved Chris Elliott's Marlon Brando.

Moss
This one sticks out in my mind. Hunter Thompson and Letterman in a hotel room. My second year of college, living in a cockroach infested apartment, looked forward to Letterman every night and i so distinctly remember watching this:
Magnetized
Wow, CBS just confirmed Stephen Colbert as Letterman's replacement. Didn't see that one coming, but brilliant choice. My prediction is that he will NOT do the show in character, although he'll probably figure out some way to not discard the blowhard entirely. This is exciting news! Maybe John Oliver will be succeeding Stephen. He did great as Jon's replacement.
Analogman
I am know I am in the minority here - but I don't care for his show or The Daily Show. They must have offered him a lot of money.

ih8music
I'm almost certain that The Stephen Colbert character will die with the Colbert Report. Not only is it undoubtedly property of Comedy Central, I just can't see that working on CBS. What we'll get for the Late Show is the real dude... which should be a pretty good fit. I'm honestly a little bit surprised that Colbert is taking the risk of walking away from something so successful as the CR... but it's a once in a lifetime opportunity, so I can imagine that it's gotta be damn near impossible to say no.I think John Oliver has a deal with HBO right now. Yep, and it's set to premiere here in a few weeks.
Lammycat
It's always weird when they get a "replacement" for a show. It's really just the name of the show and time slot, right? There's still gonna be a Top 10? Still Paul Shaffer? Still same running bits? What's the point of naming a successor if in reality it's going to be a different show anyway. Is it the time slot? calvino
I am assuming Paul is leaving, too --- could be wrong about. I bet the Top Ten List will go, too. I remember there was some issues with bringing the Top Ten list from NBC to CBS when Dave made the switch, I think it was determined that Letterman "owned" the rights to the Top Ten List, not NBC, of course I could be wrong about that, too. Happy for Colbert --- good for the City of Chicago, too (He is a Northwestern grad and Second City alum.)

jff
I think this is a mistake. Can't blame Colbert for accepting, though.
Mr. Heartbreak
He's a talented guy, and I think he'll be great. I will miss the character he plays now, but I have to admit I have not watched the show regularly in quite some time.
LouieB
I will miss the character, although I must admit he breaks character more now than he used to. He is a funny guy so it should work well. Very sharp, LouieB
Lammycat
Never saw more than an interview or two from Colbert. If that's a character/persona he plays it's going to look pretty awkward in the switch.
LouieB
The character has to go. He can't do a satire on an hour national network show like that. I think he will be fine interviewer, maybe even better than Letterman who sometimes gets lazy. I have to admit I don't watch Letterman at all anymore. I think it was time for him to go awhile back.
