jw harding
Give the Brokedown a play for a little fun:https://archive.org/details/gd87-08-16.prefm.ladner.4170.sbeok.shnfHigh-larious! Anyone else think the music to Brokedown sounds a lot like Masterpiece?
mountain bed
That was the first Dark Star> The Other One I ever listened to and it's one mean sounding segue. When they're out exploring on a Dark Star, the last thing you'd expect them to play next is TOO. And then there's an UJB jam sandwiched in the middle! This is, by far, my favorite '69 recording. It isn't followed by TOO, but try on the 11/2/69 Dark Star for size! That one, and 4/22 are my favorites from that year. Other than the obvious, "just exactly perfect" 2/27 Live Dead version.Ha, no shit. That Boulder Weekly article is noise, too. So sick of the bitching on the 80s fb page/elsewhere. Pay up and go (or try to) or shut up and stay home. Whiners that have tix and whiners that don't want tix and whiners without tix that think they may have wanted tix but aren't 100% sure if they would even use the tix because Jerry is dead and if they had the tix could they bear Trey and on and on and on and on.The 80s page has been so insufferable for the last month that I've been reduced to telling people to STFU all the time. It's sad over there, folks.I think the ticketmaster monopoly on selling concert tickets has been firmly established as a reality of the concert industry that there is no way of getting around. It sucks, but what rock have some of these people been hiding under for the past 30 years? Let's just magically break all sorts of contracts and keep all the tickets for true Deadheads. YEA!The thing is, for as long as I can remember GDTS only got about 25% of the tickets anyway. They were lucky to get ANY. Ticketmaster is like the IRS - you just cannot get around 'em. It's sad over there, folks.Yep, I had to unfollow the 80s Facebook page. Too much spam from people bitching. Personally, I have zero interest in the Soldier Field event, but I'm not going to go online and cry about it every day. I mean, I feel sorry for folks who got shut out, but geez...get over it. Been listening to some of the better known highlights of the Europe '72 shows, stuff I have only played once or twice before. Right now I've just worked my way through parts of 5/10 and am making my way through just about all of 5/11. Man, they are just so much fun during this time frame. I'm actually looking forward to that Academy of Music Dave's Pick coming up, although it looks to be a much more Bob-centric than Jerry-centric pick. Still seems like it will be enjoyable. Winston Legthigh
There's a recent interview with Trey A. about the upcoming shows (I think it was in Rolling Stone?) - what he's doing to prepare, etc. He mentioned that 74 and 77 are his favorite years. I don't have any shows from 74. Are there any Dick's Pick's or Road Shows that ya'll can recommend? Thanks in advance.

All tunes from the last shows in 74 at Winterland.

How about a Dark Star> Gamehendge> Terrapin?
calvino
I can't imagine them doing any Phish tunes --- I wouldn't mind if they did one or two during the weekend, though - but I don't see it happening. A "The Valley Road" or "Stander on the Mountain" would be most welcomed, though.
jw harding
Doubt they'll do any Phish, not appropriate. How about a Jeff Chimenti deep cut? Hope they just play the classics. At the Alpine Valley reunion shows they threw in a few curveballs - newer tunes by Mickey and Bob. I'd estimate that there are about 90 great songs that need to be played, so a few good ones will probably be left out.
Lammycat
There's only about 60-70 or so tunes they'll likely play the whole weekend (if sticking to the format they used the last 20 yrs or so of GD). It'd be cool if they dusted off some stuff that they do with the offshoot bands (Golden Road, Mason's, Viola Lee, etc.). Agree that any Phish tune making the cut is highly unlikely and not really the place for it, anyway.

Also, can't go wrong with most any show from the summer Wall of Sound tour. For official releases, there's Road Trips Vol. 2 No. 3, Des Moines and Louisville. And DP vol. 12, Providence and Boston June 1974. And my personal favorite (and not just because it was my first GD show), Roosevelt Stadium 8-6-74, a monster show. Don't get the official release of that, they chopped it up with the previous Philly show. I can hook you up with a great copy. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Thanks in advance.I know everyone will expect me to say this but you need ALL of 'em. 2/24 (latest Dave's), 3/23 (1st Wall show), 5/14 (Dave's #9), 6/16 & 18 (RT), 6/26 &28 (Dick's #12), 7/31 (Dave's #2), 8/4,5&6 (Dick's #31), 9/10&11 (Dick's #7) & the Movie soundtrack (Oct). Off the top of my head I think that's it.
calvino
Sadly, I think most of the official 74 releases are OOP and a bit pricey. Of course excellent 74 recordings are out there for download.
Analogman
I was reading the Robert Hunter interview in Rolling Stone and noticed this: What are your favorite covers of songs you wrote with him?I liked Elvis' "Ship of Fools" a lot. And who's that band that did "Ripple"? Jane's Addiction. That was incredible! I almost dropped my chewing gum. Of course he means Elvis Costello. That would be a trip if Elvis did some Dead songs. I am thinking he could have done Looks Like Rain.
Lammycat
I concur with the Jane's take on "Ripple," too. Superb. Probably my favorite cover of a GD tune.
calvino
That 'Deadicated' cd is a great one -still listen to it quite a bit. Link to the 2nd part of the Rolling Stone interview with Hunter - it's a good read. http://www.rollingstone.com/music/features/grateful-deads-robert-hunter-on-jerrys-final-days-we-were-brothers-20150311?page=3 Enjoyed the bit how Weir always put a copy of Hunter's lyrics in his back pockets and ending up washing his pants with them still in there... Analogman
I don't think I ever owned it - but I recall hearing it somewhere back in the early 1990s.
jw harding
Jane's cover is pretty amazing. Took me a few years to figure out it was the music to the Other One with Ripple's lyrics.

worldrecordplayer
I've always had Deadicated, haven't listened to it in a many years, will give it a spin, thanks for the reminder. Those Hunter interviews in RS were excellent.
jw harding
It is? Huh...never realized that.Yeah, it's not really obvious until they start the fade out and it's just the music to the Other One. Stephen Perkin's brother was a big Deadhead, and some of the guys in Jane's were fans to some extent.
Winston Legthigh
Thanks to all for the '74 suggestions. One question that I think I already know the answer to: Are Dick's picks even available? (Available meaning: not having to pay beau coup bucks through eBay/amazon?). My primary source would be downloads, since I don't have easy access to a record store. As for the best GD cover, my vote would go to Los Lobos' West LA Fadeaway: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmhcTxhDCS4

Amazon is a good place to start because you can get decent used ones for a decent price. I would send them to you if I knew how. Have them all on an external hard drive and iPod....
