Wilco — 4/22/15, Dallas, TX (McFarlin Auditorium)

Recommended Posts

I'm working on little to no sleep, so this might be a bit of a shorter recap than usual. At any rate, not a huge amount to say except that in its first performance of 2015, the band seemed to pick up almost right where it left off at the Winterlude run in Chicago last December.

That meant the fortunate Dallas crowd got to witness firsthand some of the great things about this 20th anniversary tour — namely, a few rarities from the box set, some deeper album cuts, the hootenanny encore. It certainly seems like that will be the general blueprint for at least this next run of Wilco shows moving forward, which I'm certainly not complaining about (even though I won't be able to make as many of them as I'd like). I expect that the band will continue mixing setlists up, though personally this one was right up my alley. It's always great to hear Secret Of The Sea — I don't know that people realize just how infrequently that's been played over the years — and, in general, to be kept off balance.

Jeff didn't have a lot to say, in terms of Banter Corner. He introduced Nothing'sever... as a song off the album Summerteeth and then, realizing he seemed to be introducing songs more than usual, joked, "This is an experiment in introducing songs. I don't like it." And in that same stretch, he also said something like "I think you guys are warming up to us." (With a few exceptions, the crowd largely remained seated throughout the main set before coming to its feet during the encores, though it did give Nels a standing ovation after Impossible Germany.)

However, to cite just one instance, Jeff didn't take what might have been an easy opportunity to poke a little fun at and/or call out the guy in the front row who took a selfie of him and his lady friend during a song with Jeff performing like two feel away. How people can do that and think the performer doesn't notice is beyond me (though at least that guy stood up the whole show). It seems like maybe Jeff and/or management have given up trying to police photos as much as they have in the past, though I'm sure if someone had been blatantly shooting video in the front row, Jeff would have said something — or had something said to them.

Anyway, despite just a so-so audience in that regard, last night's show was a fun way to kick off a couple weeks of touring ahead. And now I can't get Panthers out of my head...

Wow! 31 songs with an opening act. Hell, it's An Evening with Wilco, as I was hoping before Royal Thunder was announced. Very excited. Thanks, bbop.

Panthers! Several years ago when I saw them at the Moon in Tallahassee, some guy periodically yelled, "Panthers, Jeff!" or "Panthers, Wilco!" throughout the show. When I listen to the recording, I always laugh when he does it. I hope he's there and they play Panthers. He'll probably rush the stage.

Ah...this is what I was hoping for, our own little "winterlude" show. I'll be at St Aug show, can't wait.

Ps - I actually requested Panthers on the wilco world website. Go figure.

just curious...how long was the set. I see on Facebook that they started at 9pm...what time did they end?

That looks like a great setlist. They even threw in a bathroom break in the middle (Impossible Germany). I might have to try to find a recording of this one. Sorry I missed it. But I live too far out to hit a late, midweek concert.

LOL on IG...but I have to say as many times as I have heard it live, I always get goosebumps at the end when they all come together.

They were on at exactly 9 o'clock  and off at 11:02 back on 11:06 done at 11:24.  Great show and crowd around me. I have always loved shows at McFarlin. SMU is such a beautiful campus and the hall always sounds so good. The only drawback is the beer and merch lines are always so long. If you want a poster from these gigs you better get it early. Mine is numbered 83/205. last night they were all gone by 10pm. Very cool collection of merch too. i picked up a very cool retro pennant with the anniversary logo which is the roman numeral 20 with the X's crossed to appear to be W's.

Such a great way to kick off this 20 year anniversary tour, i imagine the set list will change throughout with the amount of rarities that were played last evening. My next stop is Solid Sound! i can't wait.

I really struggled as to whether or not to go to this one

I'm old.

I'm tired.

My concert buddy is in College (my wife won't go to shows with me anymore and my daughter has to be at work at 7am).

McFarlin is a bit of a beast with respect to tickets and parking.

I probably made a mistake...but I'm not falling asleep at work today . It won't be the last time I make a mistake.

Panthers

Either Way

I'll Fight

Cars Can't Escape

Someday Soon

It's Just That Simple

Secret Of The Sea

Give Back The Key To My Heart* [Doug Sahm]

Be Not So Fearful* [bill Fay]

Pretty sure I have yet to see any of the above songs in all my years of Wilco shows. So I'd be happy with any of those.

That is a seven song run that would have just about made me crap my pants. I would have needed that bathroom break in IG that followed it. Though I would have preferred a Jesus, etc. bathroom break, I would not have quibbled at that point.

I feel you.

I've been going to Wilco shows since they started (and Uncle Tupelo shows before that).  They're playing here in about 4 hours and I'm like.....just can't decide if I want to deal or not.

It would be fairly easy to attend, but my wife is too tired to go and that's a hard sell without her.

That said: what is the deal on getting information about show posters prior to the show???

Been a long time since I posted here...

Awesome....looking forward to my 3 shows (Tally, Orlando, WPB).

bbop...you gonna be at any of these? I would love to buy you a beer or soda.

Thanks for the thought, but unfortunately won't be able to get to FLA this time around. Hope you enjoy the run! Look forward to the reports...

Just now reading this. IF he was there last night, he had an easy opportunity to rush the stage since the stage was so low! But no stage rushers, fortunately.

  • 2 weeks later...

I SWEAR I will share the show soon.  Life is not as simple as it used to be and being a DAT taper I need to transfer to disc before I share.  IT WILL BE ON DIME WITHIN A WEEK OF THIS POST.  Typing that will motivate me.

Wilco has a long-standing policy against the videotaping of their shows, and out of respect for this policy, the posting of such videos on Via Chicago is not allowed.

This also applies to solo Jeff Tweedy shows.
