will I be yelled at for standing/dancing at a seated show?

Recommended Posts

going to Ithaca tmrw. its a seated show. Now, I'm no crazy dancer with flailing arms but I dont understand

how anyone can sit during any concert!   I plan on standing and moving during the show. Will people yell at me,

throw stuff at me and make me feel guilty?

I'm scared! No Kidding.  I've seen some nasty stuff go down at non-Wilco concerts between sitters and standers.

I just want us ALL to have a good time. :-)

I'd say that the odds are good if everyone else decides to remain seated.

TRUE STORY: I was ejected from a Pearl Jam arena show about 20 years ago because I was slightly bouncing and swaying in my front row seat as Sonic Youth were on stage. I'd had words earlier with an abusive security goon (he asked to see my ticket every 5 minutes even though I hadn't moved from my seat) and he gave me the stink eye the whole time until a bunch of security guys showed up to escort me outside. The people sitting near me all told them that I'd been behaving myself, but out I went. One of my escorts apologized as he threw me out and said, "Sorry man, he called in and said that you were out of control. He's a dick."

wow. that is a bummer. and simply insane. What theater was that at? And Pearl Jam in 1995? People were sitting - in the front row even? WTF? You should have gotten your money back. There are no terms and conditions on the tickets about moving in your seat, are there? Im sorry that happened to you.

I simply cant NOT dance during Wilco. I cant even listen to them at work on my headphones without having to stand up and tap my feet along. Its seriously difficult to not dance a little and share in the movement and music and moment.

I always politely let people know behind me at every single concert I have been to that I will be standing and dancing.  I have a center orch, center section seat. I will probably be killed.  My friend has an aisle seat. Are my chances any better in an aisle?  I don't go to GA shows because of a bad experience I had once at a GA concert where i was practically crushed alive. And in this case, Wilco arent playing near NYC anywhere else but this seated theater.

Explain this if you can, how can ANYONE sit down during HANDSHAKE DRUGS? or OUTTASITE...or now, RANDOM NAME GENERATOR?

people say well, "it's an older crowd". What does THAT mean? I'm Tweedy's age and shit, if he gets to stand and move around the whole show, I want to as well!   I just saw a bunch of Who concerts over the past 2 years and every single show, the first 10-15 rows at least if not more were on their feet the whole time. Talk about an older crowd!

I am not going down without a fight.... a polite one.

oh, and hey, I only JUST saw that your profile picture is Keith Moon! guess we have the same great taste in music!

Anybody who's been to concerts with me knows that I have a similarly hard time keeping still, but I would say that no matter how much you need to boogie, you should try to strike a balance between satisfying your need and maybe creating a vortex of bad vibes around you. I mean, I'm with you--why would ANYONE sit during a Wilco show?--but the fact is some people do. In those situations I can be a pretty animated chair dancer. In the future, if it's that important to you to stand, I would suggest GA shows for Wilco. I don't think you'll run into a mosh pit with Wilco fans.

If I was going to the show and was near you, we'd start a movement!

Oh how I wish you would be at the show with me. Not only would be start a movement

we could start a revolution!

Even if I wanted to go to a GA show, there are no other concerts near me, as it is, I've got to

drive 5 hours to see the show and take of two days of work! I think I deserve a dance or two!

I will seek that balance you speak of, grasshopper.

I'll probably talk my friends aisle seat for more leg swinging room, and air drumming as well

He'll be happy cause he'll get upgraded to a much better seat. But in the end, being physically

closer to a band is less important o me than connecting to that band's music.

Sometimes at concerts even when I am in front row, I close my eyes to be transported

by the sound. Oh gosh, I'm weird, aren't I... (And yes I was ever so slightly a deadhead growing up,

but more mod/punk rocker)

Thanks for the advice!!!!

I got harrassed at Wilco at The Hollywood Bowl for standing/dancing.  Some jerk-offs seated in the garden boxes behind me and my fiancee didn't like us standing during the show andresorted to passive aggressive statements and throwing water at us.  I opted to not sit down for the rest of that show.  If someone is going to be polite about it and ask me to sit, I'm going to comply (but probably going to stand again at some point and just move off to the side, out of that persons point of view).  I'm definitely a stander/dancer at any concert I cattend, especially Wilco shows.

I love the should we stand or should we sit thread. It's been a while since we've seen it.

The best thing you can do is ask the person in front of you what they're planning on doing and hopefully you can convince them to stand. Since people have such a herd mentality these days once people see that people are standing up they'll stand up too. But unfortunately there are a ton of people at Wilco CONCERTS who for some reason think they bought tickets to Wilco ThePlay and that they should sit and watch it like a movie.

In a perfect world the first level of any venue would be for standers and the upper level or levels could be for sitters and people could freely choose where they wanted to be based on their preferences.

As for whether or not you'll get yelled at, sadly I think the chances of that increase all the time. For some reason there are more and more jerks at every Wilco concert. My first show, zero jerks. My most recent show (Solid Sound), literally a hundred jerks or more.

If my wife and I feel like standing and dancing /moving, then we're up and boppin'. That's why we are there, to be moved by the music. She's less concerned about others than I am, so she's usually up, then I join. Is it arrogant? Is it douchey? Sure, just as much as expecting no one to stand and dance at a rock show is arrogant and douchey. It's a coin with 2 sides and I can understand them both. Everyone paid money and feels as though they deserve a certain experience due to buying a ticket.

Lately, depending on the act and prices, we have been choosing to, if available, sit in the last row of a section. The chance to freely dance overrides being closer to the stage.

If they venue doesn't tell you to sit and you can handle the possible backlash from others, dance away.

i had to shoot from the soundboard at a Steely Dan show here recently.

you would not believe the outrage and vein-popping anger some old seated dude had for us, who were obviously obscuring the heart-stopping action that Fagan and Becker were laying down on stage for the first 10 minutes. get on your fucking feet, gramps.

I have a disability so it's sometimes hard for me to stand for 2 hours.  I have been to one Wilco show before and was in the balcony.  I ended up having to stand the majority of the time, and I sat down for a couple songs that aren't really at the top of my favorites list.  When I saw Wilco last week in Kalamazoo I made sure I got front row of the balcony, as I was anticipating the crowd in the balcony to stand.  Ended up being awesome seats by the way.  Throughout the show, I looked back at the rest of the balcony a few times.  The only time that more than maybe 20 people total stood was at the end of each set.  That kinda surprised me.  But either way, I ended up being able to sit the whole time and still got an great view of the stage.

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!

I'm gonna dance my ass off tonight !! I can barely contain my excitement for the show and I haven't even hit the road yet for the drive to Ithaca. My first wilco show!!!!!!

I consider myself a pretty Considerate concertgoer. I dont hog space. When

I've had great seats for shows like front row I've let shorter person behind me swap seats.

As for tweedy saying something well id love it but maybe he doesn't dance at concerts!

At The Who shows last tour around uk and USA a 70 year old Roger Daltrey told the audiences to get up off their arses! In Amsterdam apparently a fight broke out I the front and the guy standing was pulled down by the seated people and his shirt was ripped!

I've often thought about this question at concerts when I apologize to people in advance for me standing, why am I saying I'm sorry? I should say that I feel bad their experience won't be what they hoped, but as humans, why must I apologize for not sublimating my desires to a stranger?

I'm overthinking :-)

Anyway thanks again for all your stories and support. Just like they have "all ages" shows they should have "all dancing shows". I know, that's what GA is for but if the venue doesn't do GA whatcha gonna do?

Hope to dance will y'all one day at a show!! ❤️

Casey I have a friend in a wheelchair. It's hard for her to get "great" seats cause she sits in designated sections. She can sometimes stand and she did at U2 in Dublin. She felt terrible for the full time wheelchair folk! You just can't make everyone happy all the time

Glad you got great balcony seats!

Dance your heart out and have a blast, Courtney S! But maybe the aisle will give you a little more freedom to move around. I personally can't wait for the opportunity to hear the Star Wars songs live, and it might not be pretty, but just try to stop me from moving to the funked-up groove of Cold Slope/King of You. Plus, how many times have Jeff et al said they feed off the audience's energy? How they gonna feel the love if everyone is sitting still?

Letter to band I posted on WILCO Facebook page that sums up my amazing experience:

https://www.facebook.com/wilcohq/posts/10153620893460421

I FOUND MY CIRCLE OF FREAKS AND WE ALL DANCED ABD THERE WERE SO MANY OF Us it was joyous. The bouncers let us all go up to stage while the front row stodgy people lost out. Jeff commended us dancers for ceasing the moment. We were an awesome crowd in Ithaca. Dancing was the rule not the exception!

I loved my audience members. They made a special show THAT much more special.

Thanks everyone on this thread. Your support really helped me find my inner dancer courage! :-)

See you on the dance floor folks! ❤️

A few people were standing during Star Wars, and it didn't seem that anyone bothered them to sit... A handful more got up for Handshake Drugs. Then Camera came in, and simultaneously everybody in the theater said "Fuck this shit!" and got up and got shakin.

I must be getting old as even I don't mind sitting at some shows nowadays... Maybe this is the way to go..  A seated 30-minute set, and then rocks out. Everybody wins.

You're funny! I did look back a few times, since I snuck to the front and I did see most of the audience up, and loving the show. So yeah I think it was a win-win for everyone. Seemed like the band loved us back!

And if the sitting works for you, go for it. I'm up there in age and was wiped out after the show, but I am unable to sit during a show! Though I did fall asleep at The Cure back in 1984.

See you on the dance floor sometime!
