Mr Misunderstood (i wonder if jeff's ears are burning?)

Recommended Posts

I DVR'd the show so I could watch any "good parts" later. I wasn't paying much attention while this was on in the background but my ears pricked up when I heard a melody line that sounded familiar. I rewound to the beginning and thought "what the...??" That was definitely a strange moment.

What are people saying here?  He name checks Jeff and gives a slight melodic tip of the hat so it's not like he's plagiarizing.

Is it a terrible song?  Well he gets to join the entire bro-country crowd I guess.

Well there are lyrics in Misunderstood that are also borrowed from another song, but they are attributed.  Borrowing riffs as quotes in songs is also not really plagiarism. Taking an entire song and passing it off as original is.  Clearly this song is an homage and for better or worse (clearly people here think it is worse) it's kind of fun.

LOL...Pretty Cool if you ask me, I wonder if JT will get a songwriting credit.  Song just came out, so have not seen the credits.

Also I like Chris Stapleton and I discovered him from CBS Saturday Morning about a month ago.  CBS Saturday usually has some good music guests as well as a good chef each week.

Here's a little more info on the lyrics from Vulture. http://www.vulture.com/2015/11/wilco-inspire-eric-churchs-new-country-single-mr-misunderstood.html

"...on Eric Church's own new surprise album,Mr. Misunderstood, released during the CMAs last night, Wilco appear via both name-check and obvious inspiration. (What would a great Eric Church single be without a rock-and-roll shout-out?) On the second verse of the album's title track (and further rumination on Church's outsider status), he sings:

Now, your buddies get their rocks off on Top 40 radio

But you love your daddy's vinyl, old-time rock and roll

Elvis Costello, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and think Jeff Tweedy is one bad mother

Mr. Misunderstood, Mr. Misunderstood.

Maybe he means it literally. In his opinion, Jeff Tweedy's mothering skills are poor, ergo Jeff Tweedy is one bad mother.

Hey folks I will color the water a bit and let you know first off as a fan of Eric Church and Jeff Tweedy I'm not the least offended by the pokes at Church, everyone's entitled to their opinion. My .02 is Church is regarded non card carrying member of " Bro Country "

He is often thought of more as a young Merle Haggard or dare I say Willie.

His characters have some depth and so do his recent lyrics notably his last two albums.

I personally think he tipped the cap to another Outsider Jeff Tweedy because he identifies with the risk taking Jeff has done in the past with label.

One of the character flaws I'm personally most pround of is enjoying a variety of music, whilst not trashing others.
I'm unsure if placing the video is allowed, but I will be a risk taker https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rOuF3k_-asA

^^^ I'm not an Eric Church fan, but FWIW the Drive-By Truckers opened for his last tour.  If he's ok in Hood's and Cooley's book, I guess he's alright by me.
