  1. I don't know if you've seen U2 live on their last couple tours but they are hardly comparable to the Rolling Stones, whose shows are basically about playing the greatest hits. On both the Vertigo and Elevation tours, the shows featured a large portion of the new albums, at least five songs. The easy thing to do would be to just play the hits but it's evident to me they believe in the new material. Now whether or not it's any good, you can be the judge of that. But I think they've strived to be a band that makes music that is still relevant, and for me they are. And, yeah, they get a lot of p
  2. Snagged a ticket for the Trouabdour show too. I was trying for the one at the Masonic at the Hollywood Cemetery, a cool place to see a show, but couldn't get through.
  3. You're not the only one. I like that song also. Although apparently I may be among the few here who also likes How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. I don't get all the hate for it but whatever. I've only listened to the new album a few times but so far I'm really liking it, especially the first three tracks which deliver a strong opening. "Magnificent" is my favorite song off of NLOH right now.
  4. Another great one off of All That.
  5. Looks like we were at some of the same shows. My first time seeing PJ was at that Greek Theatre show in Berkeley and while I enjoyed Ten, it was their live performance that made me a fan. I've seen them maybe a dozen times since then, including at their Bridge School shows. Wasn't the show where Eddie got sick at Golden Gate Park, though? I actually wasn't at that show (saw them in Sacramento instead) but I remember hearing about it. I believe they did a make-up show in San Jose.
  6. I like what I heard so far of "Get On Your Boots" but it'll take me a few more listens to make up my mind. As for great U2 songs, I was just listening to U2 on shuffle yesterday and was reminded of what a lovely song "Kite" is.
  7. I don't see why anyone would be upset over the multiple formats. I'm a huge U2 fan (I bought the deluxe edition of How to Dismantle An Atomic Bomb when that came out and all the deluxe reissues of their early albums this year) but I see nothing in any of the extra formats that I feel I would be missing out on. A poster and a download? Come on! It's not like with Bob Dylan's Tell-Tale Signs where you had to pay $100 to get the third disc of the set. I'm fine with just getting the normal $10 album in this case.
  8. I disagree with the premise as well. I'm still a fan of both bands. I think Accelerate is a great album and enjoyed most of Reveal. I'd say Around the Sun was the only one of R.E.M.'s recent releases I found subpar. As for U2, I thought Pop had some great stuff on there (I love "Please" and "Gone") although not all of it works. With their last two albums, they did less experimenting and just concentrated on putting together a good collection of songs.
  9. Seems like a stretch and conveniently timed for maximum publicity for Satriani just as Coldplay get a bunch of Grammy nominations.
  10. I'm seeing them next week in LA and am starting to regret it. Apparently, the reviews from their shows have been pretty bad. Here's one from their show in NYC. http://www.fluxblog.org/2008/11/one-last-trip-to-hell
  11. I already heard it twice on the radio this morning and it didn't make much of an impression. I agree with John Smith. Sounds like Trent Reznor's left-overs.
  12. I saw Green Day perform American Idiot in its entirety before the album came out at a club in LA. It was awesome.
  13. I saw the Pumpkins last summer at the Fillmore (the original one in San Francisco) and thought they put on a good show although a little self-indulgent at times. But hey, that's to be expected right with Corgan. Still, I don't see what the big deal is with them playing an Indian casino. A lot of those places have gotten pretty fancy and get some big name talent. Near where I live in Riverside, Bob Dylan is playing the Pechanga Casino in Temecula in September.
  14. I'll be seeing them twice next weekend at the Hollywood Bowl Thursday and then the Greek Theatre in Berkeley on Saturday. I've seen REM about a dozen times over the last 20 years and they always put on a good show.
  15. I saw this on sale at Best Buy for $7.99 so I picked it up. I'm enjoying it quite a bit.
  16. I guess it's a moot point now but what I meant by a "secret" show was like the pre-Coachella San Diego show they did a few years ago. It was announced on their website only a short time before the show and was on sale at Ticketmaster as Catseye. So basically if you were a Wilco fan who checked their website or Via Chicago you knew about it.
  17. They will reportedly have five different stages so yes you will have several artists playing at the same time. That's always the big problem with these kinds of festivals: choosing between the artists you want to see who are scheduled to perform the same time. Just this past weekend at Coachella I could only stay for half of Spiritualized's set because I wanted to catch all of My Morning Jacket. I hope they don't have Beck and Radiohead on at the same time at Outside Lands because those are the two acts I'd want to see most on Friday. On another note, I'm wondering if Wilco might add a secret
  18. Urban Hymns is the best album by the Verve. The Replacements drunken antics detracted from their talent. Otis Redding's version of "Respect" is preferable to Aretha Franklin's.
  19. It's now official. They're playing. Unfortunately, the website doesn't say what day. I'm hoping it's the same day as Radiohead.
  20. Ladies and Gentlemen, We Are Floating in Space is generally acknowledged to be their best although I'm also partial to Let It Come Down.
  21. Apparently there's a rumor that Wilco will be among the bands playing at the Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco in August that Radiohead, Tom Petty and Jack Johnson are headlining, according to a posting on At Ease, the Radiohead fan message board. Anybody know if there's any substance to the rumor?
  22. A pointless article. Seems like the writer is trying to make a case for a debate that no one is advancing. I'd agree that on the basis of Uncle Tupelo and Son Volt's Trace he's considered one of the elites of alt-country even if nothing he's done since Trace has matched its brilliance. Still, this is kind of silly. Who decides the elite and why does it really matter?
  23. I thought it was great. The effects were cool. I just wish they hadn't cut the setlist. The movie is at least a half-hour shorter than one of their usual shows.
