I don't know. Malone played a different position, but at his peak he was quite a force. I'm not saying Malone was as good as Jordan, but for a few years, he was very comparable in his overall ability to take over a game and lead his team to victory. "killer instint" = knows how to win, WILL NOT let another player or team impose their will on them when the game's on the line, the opposite of Kirk Hinrich. I NEVER felt like, with Jordan on the team, that Chicago would lose a playoff series. In fact, even in his rusty comeback season, I was shocked when Orlando beat the Bulls. I remember a

Yeah, and I was rooting like hell for the Bulls. I felt Utah had everything it needed to win a Championship, but Malone lacked the killer instinct that Jordan had. Similarily, the Nuggets might actually have all that's needed to go the Finals, but NO WAY it's gonna happen.

The end of the game reminded me of the what seems like 50 times the Bulls would somehow beat a seemingly better Utah team in the Finals. How did Denver lose last night? My answer: Phil Jackson > George Karl

Caught Leno last night. It's easy to see why his show is so popular. He did a bit where he goes to an apartment complex and gets residents to act out movies, using costumes and even later-added special effects. William Shatner showed up to play Captain Kirk in a Star Trek bit. All very silly but fun. Terry Bradshaw and Jay had a good exchange. Blink 182 did their thing. And check out this song by an 8 year old piano-playing prodigy....pretty good little tune: http://www.nbc.com/The_Tonight_Show_with_J...-51909/1107581/

I don't think the stream is up anymore....maybe just a temporary glitch with Wilco's server....?

The Jayhawks (including Louris, Olson, and related)

I like Mark's solo stuff as well as the Harmony Ridge Creek Dippers. But those HRCD albums are a little hit and miss. For example, on Pacific Coast Rambler, the Mark-dominated songs (Give My Heart To You, Pacific Coast Rambler, and Call the Light) are exemplary. But there's also some pretty lame and/or uninspring stuff like Elijah or Welcome Home Jim. I agree overall that Gary's lyrics are very mediocre (or worse), but Sound of Lies has so many great sounds (including Gary's great voice), that it makes for a better listening experience than pretty much all of Marc's solo stuff or the HRCD. Dash 7 didn't even make the top 20?! You all are complete idiots.

I agree that Letterman's show was great at COMEDY for a long time, especially at NBC. But what happened to Letterman's focus? Is he trying to be funny or is trying to be John Stewart? I prefer late night "comedy" to be off the wall, silly and just funny without having to inject a political angle to it. It's very hard to make political jokes or skits that don't irritate or offend a good chunk of the audience. Making jokes and skits about how dumb George Bush is EASY. Making jokes and skits that are timelessly funny is HARD. Letterman was BRILLIANT at this at NBC. Dave's silly conversations

I, too, really like Sound of Lies. A very, very solid disc. Hollywood Town Hall will always be my favorite....it's SO great. But on certain days I'd put Sound of Lies at least even with Tomorrow the Green Grass. -
I hope you're right, actually. I've never been a Lakers fan.

Just 2 more weeks with Leno at the helm. Leno says his last week (May 25-29) will include some of his favorite guests, including Mel Gibson, Billy Crystal, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Wanda Sykes and his last guest will be Conan O'Brien (!). And Leno promises "something special" for the last show....he doesn't want to spoil whatever it is. Conan will take over the following Monday, June 1st. I grew to like Leno a lot. He's a class guy and his opening half hour was very strong. But I can't wait to see THE king of late night TV take over the Tonight Show (with Andy Richter!!).

My Darling is my least favorite song on Summerteeth, but I think Jay's ragged version is actually more interesting than the Summerteeth version.
-
Anyone in favor of having the Lakers/Nuggets and Cavaliers/Magic play a 3-day long best-of-three? The next 2 weeks are just pure masturbation. Must we wait ANOTHER 2 weeks for the inevitable?! Gimme Kobe vs. Lebron......NOW please!

Post inane comments about the new Wilco album
jakobnicholas replied to myboyblue's topic in Just A Fan
"Solitaire" is obviously Jeff's tribute to the Statler Brothers. -
I thought this might be a joke thread after others have been asking if Wilco has lost it's "edge". Now their TOO edgy? Ha. That's funny.

Yeproc is streaming the new Minus 5 album "Killingsworth" along with the new Young Freshfellows album. I've listened a couple times and the music sounds very solid. The lyrics are weird and/or strange and or funny....typical Scott McCaughey. http://www.yeproc.com/news.php?articleId=6084

This post makes NO sense to me. "Too eclectic." Bull Black Nova and You and I "cannot be reconciled" musically? WTF! Do you write for Pitchfork?

I hope I agree with you about the new Son Volt. I've always liked Farrar's voice and understated nature. And I've always liked the feel of Son Volt's music. I think I like the new Wilco more than you. You Never Know and Sonny Feeling are the clunkers in my opinion....forced and/or lazy pop songs. But the rest is VERY solid, I think....better than Sky Blue Sky. Guess I'll weigh in sometime in July.
-
I find this EXTREMELY difficult to believe, but when the actual Son Volt disc is in stores and I can buy it and listen to it, I'll be anxious to see if you're right. Just so you know where I'm coming from, I think Trace is brilliant. The next 2 are very good. But Son Volt's remaining albums as a whole have been on a decline since....with some very good song nuggets thrown in along the way. I prefer most of Jay's solo stuff to Okemah....mostly a snoozer for me.

I agree that Lakers are better if Lebron and Kobe aren't counted. BUT....I've been amazed at how the Cavs seem to respond to Lebron's positive leadership. Phil Jackson, to me, is the biggest worry for Cavs fans. Jackson's been through it all so many times and will NEVER panic and will always have a strategical answer during the series. And the Lakers winning in 7 is very possible. I don't know. I just have a feeling about Lebron. Something special with that guy. Normally I'd NEVER pick a team just because of one player, but it just seems different with Lebron.
-
I agree with that...though, to me: Celtics' Heart > Magic's skill. Will Lebron stay in Cleveland? I hope so. No offense to the Knicks, but they don't deserve to get Lebron just because they have the big bucks.
-
AND he made the all-defensive team. I really hope Lebron stays healthy for the next 10 years. I live in a non-NBA city, and I'll watch the NBA if Lebron's on. My only hesitation thinking he could be better than Jordan is Jordan's will to win was so strong. Only time will tell if James' will is the same.
