  1. That's hilarious. One of the all-time great Bloom County moments. I always loved Oliver Wendall Jones, the smart computer whiz kid. Hysterical. For those who don't know, Breathed has some kid's books out. I love his full-color illustrations. One of his recent stories, "Mars Needs Moms" was bought by Disney and is supposed to start production next year with Rober Zemekis at the head, using stop-action animation like Polar Express.
  2. This Sunday will be the final strip of Opus (formerly Bloom County). Kinda sad, I think. It was a GREAT cartoon in its heyday. Berkeley Breathed, the cartoonist, says he's bowing out for 2 reasons, one being that the newspaper just isn't as big anymore...especially for cartoons. I found an article that elaborates on the other reason: Apart from changes in the newspaper industry, the other big factor in his decision to quit is the nasty tenor of the current presidential campaign. "What made it immediate and clear was the unpleasantness in our national discourse, which I get deeply s
  3. Lovie's voting like 99 percent of other African-Americans? Shocker. Wayne Huizenga is saying he'll sell the Dolphins should Obama be elected President. Some estimate Huizenga could save himself 60 million dollars by selling before Obama's tax plan takes effect.
  4. I take it to mean it was a "Colbert exclusive" because Tweedy used Colbert's name in the middle of the song. When or if this song appears on an album, that probably wouldn't be the case. Lots of good band name/songs listed.
  5. Ditto everything you said! (maybe not so much the Obama part, but the song made me feel so good I might even be OK with Rosie O' Donnell being Pres.)
  6. Pixar's next film is called Up (http://www.pixar.com/featurefilms/up/), and I found the following blurb at slashFilm.com: Monday night Disney held a test screening for Pixar
  7. "Up On The Roof" - The Drifters "Race For the Prize" - Flaming Lips "I Just Want to Be Your Everything" - Barry Gibb "Very Special Love Song" - Charlie Rich "Red Dragon Tattoo" - Fountains of Wayne
  8. It's got fans-go-nuts crowd-pleaser written all over it. If not on an album, it's GOTTA be a live staple. How many other bands have written songs with their band title in the song name? I thought of 3: - The Story of Yo La Tengo - Belle and Sebastian - Okkervil River Song
  9. WOW!!!! Been a long time that a live TV Wilco performance gave me goosebumps. That was great! What a cool little rockin' number that was!!!!!
  10. A very intersting opinion column in the Wall Street Journal. Here's the first few paragraphs...with link to full article. Obama and the Politics of Crowds The masses greeting the candidate on the trail are a sign of great unease. By FOUAD AJAMI There is something odd -- and dare I say novel -- in American politics about the crowds that have been greeting Barack Obama on his campaign trail. Hitherto, crowds have not been a prominent feature of American politics. We associate them with the temper of Third World societies. We think of places like Argentina and Egypt and Iran, of multitude
  11. Yes, 10:30 central time. I Shall Be Released is a good guess.
  12. I have no clue. I think a new song is possible, as they're supposedly releasing an album early-ish next year. Maybe they have a new song that somehow ties in to the politcal climate (or the older Jesus Christ for President, perhaps). But I'll guess one of these: Either Way, You Are My Face or Side With the Seeds.

  14. I'm only letting myself listen a handful of times to any new songs, so not to spoil the next album. But the song from the 26th is my favorite post-Sky Blue Sky song so far. VERY beautiful.
  15. (Perhaps all future Pixar info can go here) - Pixar this week is showing brand new animated shorts involving Mater from Cars on the Toon Disney channel. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week at 6:56 ET, 5:56 CT, 6:56 PT. They're tall tales stories from Mater and involve him in Looney Tunes-like scenarios. I saw "Mater the Greater" last night, and it's quality is as good as all Pixar efforts. And it was quite funny. For those who don't get Toon Disney, all three of these "Cars Toons" will be shown through the day this coming Saturday, November 1st on the Disney Channel. And then --
  16. This could be the kick in the ass that the Republicans need AND deserve. Who knows who will be the Republican nominee in 2012, but it surely will be much stronger than the middle-of-the-road, bland McCain. This line is interesting from the above article: No president has had the support of such a majority (if Democrats get to 60-40) since Jimmy Carter won the 1976 election. And that sure worked out fantastically.
  17. Of course, many Christians (including Catholics) don't take the Old Testament literally. On another note...must see TV tonight? David Letterman vs. Bill O'Reilly
  18. This will be great. Any live Wilco is good Wilco. A new song is doubtful, but would be WONDERFUL*. *Assuming it's not titled, "I Love Obama and Want to Squeeze His Man Breasts"
  19. I'll stay out of the Obama is or isn't a Socialist debate. He's definitely said things that one could interpret as having a touch of Socialism, but none of us really know what's gonna shake down in an Obama presidency. As for "Unwelcomed Guest", it might be my favorite Bragg/Wilco song. This song and Another Man's Done Gone both share AMAZING vocals from Tweedy.
  20. Here's another: "The Unwelcome Guest" To the rich man's bright lodges I ride in this wind On my good horse, I call you My shiny black Bess To the playhouse of fortune To take the bright silver And gold you have taken From somebody else And as we go riding In the damp foggy midnight You snort, my good pony And you give me your best For you know and I know Good horse 'mongst the rich ones How oftimes we go there An unwelcome guest I never took food From the widows and orphans And never a hardworking man I oppressed So take your pace easy For home soon like lig
  21. At War With the Mystics isn't their best, but to me, it's still a great listen. Sound of Failure, Vein of Stars, It Overtakes Me (the 2nd half), Mr. Ambulance Driver, Pompeii, and Going On are all BEAUTIFUL songs....musically and lyrically. Yeah Yeah Yeah and The Wand add some much-needed grit to the record. If it's the Lips' worst record, that proves how PHENOMENAL the Lips (who've been around awhile) are.
