  1. RIP, Kate. The matriarch of a remarkable musical family.
  2. Critical reaction to preview screening That piece links to additional ones. Interesting reading.

  4. I once loathed Queen, but have grown to appreciate them. They'll never be a favorite band of mine, but I now enjoy hearing certain Queen songs on the radio. Probably due to nostalgia (I grew up in the '70s). I really didn't like Andrew Bird the first several times I heard his stuff (and I even saw him live with Bowl of Fire). Then his music evolved, and by the time he released Armchair Apocrypha, I was a fan.
  5. Do they also think "I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better" is a Petty song?
  6. I'm not the sort who enjoys festivals, but SLY & THE FAMILY STONE???!!!!???!!! link Coachella 2010 lineup VANESSA FRANKO | The Press-Enterprise The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival has announced its 2010 lineup with Jay-Z, Muse and Gorillaz headlining the eleventh year of the festival, which takes place at the Empire Polo Field in Indio on April 16-18. Other bands performing at the festival include Them Crooked Vultures, the supergroup with Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones, Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl and Queens of the Stone Age front man and desert native Josh Homme. 7. While I acknowledge the possibility that Leno's account may be entirely accurate, I'm sensing some serious spin there.
  8. Despite being a Wilco fan from day one (and a UT fan before that), I have missed nearby Wilco shows much more often than I've attended them. Sad to say, I have a pretty poor track record for actually getting out to see them. In general, though, I'm not someone who often goes to multiple shows by an artist. I've seen Wilco more than any other artist with only a few exceptions (Elvis Costello being one). 9. Hope you're back home and healthy soon, Greg.
  10. This may have been the only piece of blasphemy in your post, but I agree with it. Though I still love The Who. Have to say I agree with that last part. Just as one example, "The Rising" was a steaming pile of crap.
  11. News flash: Jeff Zucker's had a stick up his ass about Conan O'Brien for 25 years. From Deadline.com NO JOKE: Jeff Zucker Had Conan Arrested By Nikki Finke | Thursday January 14, 2010 @ 11:10pm It's just been brought to my attention that, while they were Harvard undergraduates, Jeff Zucker '86 called the cops on Conan O'Brien '85. (I never saw previous reports about this.) According to articles in both the Harvard Crimson and Yale Daily News, Zucker, then president of the university's Harvard Crimson daily newspaper, dispatched the police to the Harvard Lampoon office after O'Brien, wh
  12. Have you ever seen old Leno stand-up footage from before he got The Tonight Show? He was seriously funny, and his material was fairly edgy. Back then, there were very few comics who could "blow him away without even trying." It's all those years of lowest-common-denominator network-approved humor that turned Jay into what he is now. But once upon a time, he was great.
  13. Ultimately, I agree with you. I just thought I'd float the idea...
  14. Problem is, if Conan goes to Fox and his show is at 11:30, I don't see how Fox can provide a sufficient lead-in for him to garner decent ratings. Their local news is from 10-11, and there's another half hour to kill, somehow. If they put him on at 11, he may still suffer from a poor Fox lead-in, but he may benefit from people who don't care about local news switching over after their 10 PM prime-time shows end. But he'll be competing directly with Jon Stewart, and I have a feeling there's a fair amount of overlap between their audiences. I don't know ... it'll be interesting, whatever happ
  15. Conan may be free to go elsewhere Conan's Exit Confirmed by Kim Masters The late-night nightmare is almost over. Conan O’Brien is leaving NBC and receiving a payout—and he’ll be free to appear on another network before his contract expires, Kim Masters reports. The NBC-Leno-Conan war is close to ending, according to a knowledgeable source. According to the outlines of a settlement, Conan O'Brien will leave NBC and the network will make an as-yet unspecified payment. The comedian will be free to appear elsewhere on television well before his contract expires, despite earlier threats fro
  16. From Salon Conan forever Big Red won our hearts as Leno became the Voldemort of comedy -- even, shockingly, to his fellow comedians By Mary Elizabeth Williams It's a battle bigger than the one between Team Edward and Team Jacob -- and even more one-sided. Though it looks likely that Conan won't be coming back after his show goes on hiatus Jan. 22 while Leno triumphantly skulks back to 11:35, in the late-night court of public opinion, you can go Team Conan or you can go home. A new Tvguide.com poll showed a staggering 83 percent of respondents saying they wanted Conan – whose show has
  17. Never cared for Kimmel, but perhaps I've misjudged him. That was 100% awesome.

  19. Yup, Conan's letter seems to have been misinterpreted by much of the media as a final departure from NBC, but until Leno agrees to return to 11:35, the possibility exists that Leno will retire after all, and Conan will remain where he is. Of course, now there are reports that the main culprit in this debacle, Jeff Zucker, is actually threatening to keep Conan off the air for the duration of his contract unless he accepts the 12:05 slot. So, in addition to being an idiot, Zucker is apparently evil, too. Conan hasn't done himself any favors lately by starting to take shots at Leno -- if Le
  20. Very nice photos. I'm missing Chicago really hard right now.
  21. Been listening to it for a while now, and I like it.
  22. I'm plenty interested in college football, but my discussions of it don't usually take place here. The Kiffin hire is fucked up. Not being a USC fan, I rather hope it blows up in their faces exactly the way the pundits seem to think it will. On the other hand, I do want USC to keep thrashing Notre Dame every year, so...
