  1. Of the stuff I truly loved, these are the five that spring to mind. Snow Crash - Neal Stephenson A Confederacy of Dunces - John Kennedy Toole Vineland - Thomas Pynchon Typical - Padgett Powell (story collection) Still Life With Woodpecker - Tom Robbins
  2. Cool, glad they did that one. Tuesday's show in Ann Arbor was full of highlights, but that song may have stood out above all the rest. Gorgeous.
  3. John Bonham's thunderous drums, or Keith Moon's.
  4. Missing Train - Richie Havens Born Sandy Devotional - The Triffids Got To Be The Way It Is - Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings Anonanimal - Andrew BIrd Toy Heart - Bill Monroe Dry Well Blues - Charley Patton Good Fortune - Joe Henry Damaged II - Black Flag Dark End Of The Street - Frank Black When I Touch You - Spirit Who Cares - Cannonball Adderley with Bill Evans Virginia, No One Can Warn You - Tift Merritt They're Not Witches - Guided By Voices Mona Roy - Leo Kottke Head Down - Icecream Hands My Father's House - Bruce Springsteen For The Good Times - Al Green If It Feels Good, You Know I
  5. Because I'm one of those people who thinks this band wasn't the same after jumping to a major label, all of my favorites are from their first five albums (plus the Chronic Town EP). This would fit on a single CD if I ever decided to burn it: Carnival of Sorts (Box Car) Laughing Perfect Circle Sitting Still Shaking Through Harborcoat So. Central Rain Pretty Persuasion Letter Never Sent (Don't Go Back To) Rockville Maps and Legends Driver 8 Life And How To Live It Green Grow The Rushes Wendell Gee These Days Fall On Me I Believe What If We Give It Away? 6. This merits additional emphasis. The money must be collected beforehand. Obviously this makes bidding interesting, because if you haven't collected enough money and the bid leaves you in the dust, well, you're out of luck. It helps to have someone who's willing and able to kick in extra at the last minute, though such people aren't always easy to find.
  7. Yes, there are. I live with one. (She's a swimmer herself.)
  8. (She has a new one coming out in March.)
  9. Excellent, thanks very much for that. My memory is a bit better than I thought. ...though somehow I forgot that they played "Precious Time." I've loved that song since Maria McKee recorded it for her 1993 album.
  10. "Stupid" is an understatement. I'm not sure how Carlos Quentin could possibly be packaged with two other players and only fetch two never-heard-of-him guys in return.
  11. I've seen photos of Phelps eating here in Ann Arbor. Should I notify the police?
  12. Of course, I have to remember that I live in Michigan, where high school football isn't that big of a deal ... especially compared to the South.
  13. If you're into it, cool. Do you actually watch high school games (or footage), or do you just follow the rankings and discussions? I understand that recruiting is an industry in and of itself ... personally, I'm just not sure why the average fan would care. To me, the whole point of having professionals worrying about recruiting is so I don't have to. My interest starts when those kids show up on the college sidelines, at the earliest. (Usually much later, if ever.)
  14. "meh" Seriously, our appetite for sports stories has come to this? I don't watch high school football, and even if I did, its scope wouldn't extend beyond the high school a mile from my house, so I have no idea who any of these kids are, whether they merit the rankings assigned to them, and what their decisions mean for my favorite teams. In short, I don't care, and I can't be bothered to care until I see with my own eyes how well they play for their college teams -- if then.
  15. I'm not sure they did, but I haven't listened to that album in a while ... and I discovered over the weekend that my CD has somehow deteriorated to the point where it's no longer playable ... like it rotted from the inside or something ... so I can't cue it up and check for you. They did play "Two Angels" from Blue Earth, but that's also on Hollywood Town Hall. There was plenty from Hollywood Town Hall and Tomorrow The Green Grass. Here's my recollection of what they played (broken down by album, accuracy not guaranteed): Hollywood Town Hall Waiting For The Sun Crowded In The Wings Two A
  16. Just got back from this. They gave us our money's worth -- at least an hour and a half, I think. There were a few first-show-of-the-tour flubs, but it was an amazing show, and featured much of the new album along with all the Jayhawks classics you'd want them to play. Among others, I was hoping for "Two Hearts" and "Settled Down Like Rain" and I got 'em both. The sound guy took a couple of songs to even out the mix (which was painful at first, as we were right under the main center loudspeakers and Louris' voice was up way too high at the beginning), but then it was nearly perfect. I coul
