  1. Unseen Power of the Picket Fence > Wilco's post-YHF output. --Mike
  2. I'm tired of being the "creative decline" guy, newborn, but I can't crush nd5, and then ignore your post. Question: Would you need to see the 1970's Disney film Gus starring Don Knotts and a field goal kicking mule more than once to determine it's not Citizen Kane? (1.) I like your enthusiasm, but let's not get carried away. I honestly can't see how someone honestly can't see that people who may differently could just as easily be right. ction has the final say on all of this anyway. I am probably close to guilty as this with the other side, as I do have hard time understanding how
  3. @We're woking on that buddy. Great post, though, I agree with everything you said. I will say though, there's a balance and a four paragraph rant about how disappointing their new material is can almost be as annoying as a simple "Wilco sucks, lol" post, at least the latter is easy to ignore. --Mike
  4. It's probably Not For The Season, done in the 2002/2003 YHF tour "Laminated Cat" style. Company in My Back, Can't Stand It, Kamera, Poor Places, Hummingbird and War on War are also ear worms. --Mike
  5. Love GtrPly's mix, and weirdly enough "Something On Your Mind" was a last second cut from my mix as well. Really dig Harlan County (hadn't heard that before) and Amphetamine is mind-blowingly good. Looking forward to hearing yours, mthomp, there's a lot of stuff on that one I like: Spiritualized, Kings of Convenience, John Cale, Karen Dalton, Fairport, and most of the bands on it are on my "to check out" list. --Mike
  6. Thrilled for this, can't wait. --Mike
  7. The Velvet Underground Talking Heads R.E.M. Yo La Tengo Sonic Youth The Beach Boys The Byrds Eels Wilco Big Star Buffalo Springfield Love Sparklehorse Califone --Mike
  8. . Nice change of pace from Wendy and Lucy. --Mike
  9. Maybe better was the wrong word to use, as technically Cline, Bennett and even Tweedy are probably better players, but Buck's parts always seem perfect for the song, which I don't always find to be the case for Wilco's guitar's players. The greatest musicians in my mind are the ones that fit their skills around a song, as opposed to fitting the song around their skills. That sounds too much like academic bullshit, though. I think I really just like the sound of Rickenbackers, and that's what Buck uses. --Mike
  10. What!?! How could your opinion be so completely different from mine? This statement is the complete opposite what I believe. Therefore you must be completely and totally wrong. . I think this is also patently fucking wrong though. I mean if you want to add a since 2004 to the end your sentence and pretend Monster didn't happen, I could get behind it. I think Chronic Town, Murmur, Reckoning, Fables, Life's Rich Pageant, Document, and Automatic all sit alongside the best Wilco stuff. Muzzle of Bees is probably my favorite song by either band, though Losing My Religion and Driver 8 are
  11. Oh yeah, she has that rare ability to engage me in away that within the first two minutes I am not really thinking that I am watching a movie, I'm just paying attention. Her stuff feels real in a way that most directors don't quite make it to. Have you seen her first two features? River of Grass or Ode? I've been meaning to check those out. I felt Wendy's situation in the film was pretty believable, I could see how in the hands of a different actress or director that character may have grated on me (if say... Diablo Cody has written the script I'd have been throwing shit at my television wi
  12. Some further thoughts on the awesomeness of this mix. --The sounds Van Dyke Parks got on his records in the sixties never cease to amaze me, I remember driving around Charleston listening to Song Cycle over and over one day and thinking if this record came out today let alone 67, it would completely blow people's minds. He invented Elephant 6 with that album. --The Jansch song is a real gem, hadn't heard anything with orchestral arrangements from him before. --I once spent two hours trying to convince my friend Sharon that the 60's Nirvana was way better than Cobain's band. Like almost
  13. For more chat about ACD, check out the Son Volt thread in the Someone Else's Song thread. Son Volt. Edit: There was a new thread about this that got merged, this post went into that, I didn't randomly make a post linking to a thread inside the thread itself. --Mike
  14. Off the top of my head... Muzzle of Bees Poor Places Chinese Apple Jesus, etc. Wait Up Sunken Treasure She's A Jar Laminated Cat New Madrid Misunderstood I Am Trying To Break Your Heart Hummingbird We've Been Had How To Fight Loneliness Please Tell My Brother Wreckroom Wanted Far Far Away Ashes of American Flags Reservations --Mike
  15. Wonderful, and also possibly the saddest I've been in awhile after watching a movie. --Mike
  16. Appears to be. Chinese Apple better make the cut. --Mike
  17. I was thinking about this today, and while it's hard to tell without the benefit of knowing where Wilco goes next I think quality wise SBS and WTA are closer to Green and Out of Time than the last three R.E.M. records. Green was the first R.E.M. record for me at least that didn't really work from start to finish, and Out of Time like WTA had a couple of killer moments (Losing My Religion, Near Wild Heaven) and some missteps (Radio Song, Shiny Happy People). Green and Out of Time certainly aren't bad albums, but their I.R.S albums and Automatic For The People are much better in my opinion in th
  18. Everyone should at least illegally download the new deluxe edition of Reckoning that came out this week. --Mike
  19. ction, Whilst discussing the band Wilco on a popular internet message board, what's the best reason to give for the band's creative downslide on the past few albums? Firing Jay Bennett? Jeff not wanting to write awesome songs like Misunderstood anymore? Can Ken Coomer be blamed for all of this in some way? Thanks, --mp21.
  20. I usually don't count the final "nothing at all," there has to be an official ruling on this, bböp's been to more Wilco shows than anyone else I think, I think he should get to make the final judgment. --Mike
  21. He looks away with this one, but the look on Sarkozy's face is pretty wonderful. This is also being discussed in the RTT, where I found these pictures. I think we have way more important things to be worrying about in the world at this stage, however if a Republican did this, I would be outraged. How's that for self-awareness? --Mike
  22. Anthony "One Time" Branca... he was called because he said everything one time. --Mike
  23. Yankee is probably my favorite album either band put out, but R.E.M has a few more great albums (everything they put out on IRS is absolutely killer). --Mike
