  1. He did, actually I think the best version of that song might be just the Jeff and Jay demo with Tweedy on vocals and Jay playing piano. I like Palace at 4 A.M. a lot, but the rest of Jay's solo stuff has been kind of hit or miss with me. I do miss his songwriting contributions to the Wilcos though, particularly when Jesus, etc. cues up on my ipod. --Mike
  2. Right. YHF's story is pretty much all told with all the press coverage it received along with the film. Kot covered Summerteeth and Being There. And A Ghost is Born is a better album than Sky Blue Sky or AM, it'd be a good fit for the series and it's time Wilco got some love from 33 1/3, the books are kind of hit and miss but when they're good they're really good. --Mike

  4. The song was written by Jeff Tweedy and Jay Bennett. Jay released his version of it on Bigger Than Blue (I think it's vastly inferior to the Wilco version), it was released as a free B-side on the Wilco site in 2003. Sam Jones filmed them working through the song for the YHF sessions which made it to the second disc of the I am Trying To Break Your Heart DVD release, it can also be seen here: . --Mike
  5. This looks pretty awful, if the people behind Epic Movie, Date Movie, et. all never made another film, we'd probably all be better for it. I do agree with you though, Beltmann, this could be a good premise if handled by a better writer/director. Someone get Mel Brooks on this. --Mike

  7. Yeah, we should chip in and find Panther an editor. Bad grammar on the internet is pretty commonplace, but it's like the kid doesn't even speak English. --Mike
  8. Is there gas in the car? Yes, there's gas in the car. --Mike
  9. Do It Again is one of the first songs I remember loving as a young-in, because my Dad had a close friend named Jack and because I was way to young to pick up on the dark undertones. I like this band quite a bit, one of my favorites of the "classic rock" genre. Plus their legendary feud with the Eagles made for some damn fine internet television Yacht Rock 10 --Mike
  10. Thanks for all the great work, Maudie . Here's how mine did... 1. The Beatles: Revolver 2. Van Morrison: Astral Weeks 3. Nick Drake: Bryter Layter 4. Wilco: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot 5. Neutral Milk Hotel: In The Aeroplane Over The Sea 6. The Velvet Underground and Nico: self-titled 7. The Kinks: Village Green Preservation Society 8. Nico: Chelsea Girl 9. The Talking Heads: Fear of Music 10. Eels: Electro Shock Blues 11. Bob Dylan: Blonde on Blonde 12. Radiohead: Kid A 13. Love: Forever Changes 14. Os Mutantes: self-titled 15. The Beatles: Rubber Soul 16. The Velvet Underground: self-titled
  11. In our recent VC Top 100 albums poll, YHF came in first, AGIB in 10th, Summerteeth in 11th and Being There in 25h. Sky Blue Sky was 117th, for what it's worth. I agree that Sky Blue Sky isn't as good as those records, but I don't think it has anything to do with the lack of tension in the band or weaker lyrics. There's just not a lot of tension in the songs and on the record and therefore I personally don't find as captivating a listen as the band's previous output. It's not a bad record, but I am rarely compelled to listen to it in its entirety. The songs are better live for the most part
  12. Yeah, Vampire Weekend made a fine record. I like the stuff that influenced it (mid 80's Paul Simon, the Talking Heads, etc.) a lot more, but there are some great songs on VW, and it's a endlessly listenable. There are a lot of diverse tastes here at VC, just look at the 100 greatest albums thread, if there are a lot of similar records that keep reappearing it kind of makes sense if you think about, because on some base level we all came here because we like a certain band, Titanic Love Affair... err... Wilco and therefore it makes sense that we'd have a couple of other overlapping artists a
  13. Well the new (and soon to be former) president of the school was essentially a political hire because he's in tight with the governor of West Virginia, who essentially micromanages every aspect of the state (except you know important stuff like our failing economy and dropping population). Morgantown is nice enough, but it's got nothing on Ann Arbor. Michigan has a better football tradition, even though WVU is probably set up for better short term success than Michigan. Things are basically similar to Florida State's situation in the mid-90's in the ACC, the Mountaineers have better talent and
  14. I agree with this more or less, though I always thought of Jay Bennett as Tweedy's McCartney. Like Lennon's first album without Paul Plastic Ono Band, A Ghost is Born is a damn impressive, chilling work. Imagine is great, but after that the quality dropped off a bit. I am not sure what direction Wilco is headed in at the moment, but I hope the new record is better than Sometime in New York City and Back to the Egg. --Mike
  15. A deal is a deal Cryp, and even if he was pressured by hourly calls by our fine state's governor to sign it, he did agree to pay up if he left. I think we're going to be a lot better than 4-8 this year, probably 10-2. Wvu will lose to Auburn and then drop our token "shit the bed" game, who knows who that'll be against this year maybe Villanova. They'll then sneak up on an unsuspecting BCS opponent that no one gives them a chance to beat and trounce them, while an entire state thinks to itself "why couldn't we play like this when it mattered in the regular season and we had a chance to go the c
  16. Basil, on behalf of the state of West Virginia, please welcome us to the TOSU bandwagon this year, under the principle the enemy of my enemy is my friend. We're even willing to forgive you for 87 and 98. --Mike
  17. Setting Michigan up for the inevitable asswhipping by WVU in a bowl game that's coming their way. I could get behind this. Just a word of advice from a long time Rich Rod observer, be prepared to see four plays on offense run over and over and over again, and ponder just how the hell this guy got labeled as an offensive genius. However, when those plays work, they tend to really work. And he's a good recruiter. And as someone who is, himself, bolting from his native West Virginia to nicer pasteurs in the midwest in two weeks, I am not really in position to complain about how "he done us wrong.
  18. Bon Iver was released last year, and I believe re-released this year on a bigger label. Vampire Weekend leaked in December and came out officially in January. By March, hipster backlash already started. --Mike
  19. Let's Fight is probably going to stay in the can, it got a pretty tepid reaction here actually back in 06, a lot of people hated the synth strings. Fear not though my good friend for great things are scientifically proven to happen to anyone who works in an electric boogaloo reference. TheMaker's description of the slow-burning song with guitar freak out at the end is spot on. This template might soon become Wilco's "Wes Anderson token slow motion shot" if it hasn't already. In other words there are times when it's really works, but because they've done it so many times already it might star
  20. I love their very first album, I've fond memories of stealing it from my father's CD collection so much at one point I just left it with my stuff. Working with Rubin could be an interesting move for them, but I am not sure I like the idea of an all covers disc. --Mike
  21. Yeah, that's spot on. This is a good direction for them to be headed, it's the first new song they've debuted live that I've been legitimately excited about for awhile. --Mike
  22. One Wing is pretty good. Sunny Feeling didn't bowl me over right away, but I think it might be a grower. Both of these are pretty interesting though. --Mike
  23. I watched that last night also. --Mike
