A Thread for Musical Blasphemy you Truly Believe
mpolak21 replied to hardwood floor's topic in Someone Else's Song
I may never listen to Sky Blue Sky in its entirety again, and it's only partially because On and On and On has been rendered unlistenable by an ex-girlfriend. I don't own a single David Bowie album, and while I love the singles, I don't think I have ever made it through an entire one. I really wish the Velvets had explored the chamber-pop sounds of Stephanie Says and managed to keep John Cale in the band, actually I don't think that's really blasphemy. I geek out everytime I hear Steely Dan, The Doobies/Michael McDonald and Christopher Cross, and it's only partially because of Yacht Roc -
I don't think I've ever seen Glenn play it live on this track, for the live versions Jeff's usually plays the dulcimer parts on an acoustic guitar. --Mike

Yeah, I've been at what is now Wheeling Jesuit University (it's also known as been Wheeling College and Wheeling Jesuit College) for the last four years, I graduate in three weeks. Both of my parents grew up around the area as well, so I've been coming up here my entire life. There's not a whole lot to do in terms of art/culture, but it's been a real nice place to spend four years. The food is great, particularly all of the pizza places-- I think DiCarlo's is probably my favorite. --Mike

What a wonderful song. My favorite tune of theirs is either Draft Morning or My Back Pages. --Mike

Yeah, I learned how to play a regular dulcimer when I was a kid. Everyone that I knew seemed to have one-- I grew in West Virginia. The hammered dulcimer is a little difficult to pick up at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's pretty easy to get some really cool sounds with it. Glenn also uses one on Wreckroom on the second Loose Fur album, Born Again in the USA, and several of the tracks on Mobile. --Mike

I love that cover, so I've listened to the record and the EP (I burned them both to one disc) more than anything else this year. Great band. --Mike

Yeah, I feel the same way. There are some intense scenes-- Elliott Gould's cameo is great-- and I found the conversation between Norton and the teacher to be pretty moving, but it falls into the cliche a little too often for my tastes. --Mike

Yeah, Kotche plays it on the track. --Mike

Larry, I happen to enjoy the majority of what you post and our musical tastes (particularly love for The Minus 5/Loose Fur/Jim O'Rourke/Leroy Bach era of Wilco) are quite similar. And for the most part when you're sarcastic around these parts its quite funny and usually towards people who usually have it coming. I found it quite admirable how staunchly you defended Rob last year, when people were bitching about Wilcobase. But I am not quite sure bobbob is really deserving of this ribbing, as unless there's some history (I know you guys have both been here a lot longer than I have) or posts

Yeah, I voted yes because I like it more often than not, but it really depends on the song. --Mike

The Doors really seem to have fallen out of favor during the past 10 or so years. They seem to be one of the bands rock snobs love to hate. I can't really think of a singular reason for this, other than a lot of people think they're music sucks (not exactly an opinion I disagree with). Perhaps their music hasn't quite aged as well as some of the other bands of the era, part of their appeal in 1967 was that they were dangerous, dark, alternative. Yet compare the first Doors albums to something like The Velvet Underground and Nico and The Doors seem a little light. I did enjoy the Doors radio si

The Kids in the Hall beard sketch got robbed, and also I'd have given SCTV a few more entries, where's Battle of the PBS Stars or the famous Michael McDonald bit. Outside of that though it was a good read. --Mike

I go to college in Wheeling, WV, I am from Charleston, WV. I have been to White Sulphur Springs many times. I actually dated a girl who lived there for awhile... didn't really work out,but it a nice little city. Hope Ken doesn't mind we've turned into a WVa. thread. --Mike

Oh cool, I didn't know that. That's where I'm from as well. --Mike

Yeah, Bill is from Slab Fork, WV which is outside of Beckley (about an hour out of Charleston). --Mike

Yeah, it looks like we're missing about three months of posts January to March 2006, I seem to remember some sort of minor crash at around that time so they might have been wiped out, they aren't in the archives (which start at December of 2005) or on this version of the board. --Mike

What's the price of gas where you are?

I paid 3.42 in Dallas Pike, WV yesterday and went over 40 dollars filling up my 2002 Mazda Protege. --Mike -
Yeah, you have to figure with the RIAA essentially making it their mission to try to stop people from downloading (which at this point is as hopeless as Max Yasgur waking up on day two at Woodstock and yelling "hey you kids get out of my yard"), webboards would be a popular target for them. Unfortunately or fortunately depending on which side you're on there's only so much they can stop. If they focus on Peer-to-peer and bit torrenting, album share blogs will flourish, if they focus on album share blogs, people will figure out a way to keep bit torrenting. I would hate to be a current employee

Yeah, that kind of gets to me at times. It's quite easy to use google, put the name of the song/album you want in quotes, click on google blog search, if you're in a hurry type the word rapidshare or megaupload along with it, viola! There's really no need for any commercial link to ever be posted here, because they're already somewhere else if people would just look for it. Personally, I do download quite a bit of music illegally, and movies as well, but everything I like I try to buy because I prefer the higher quality of CD's and vinyl. However, there's just so much out there that I want t

I'd like to add that Billy Packer annoys the hell out of me, and I really wish they'd replace him with Gus Johnson. Congrats to Kansas! --Mike

Wonderful game, this has made up for the past couple of rounds of mediocre games. Got to say I'm pulling for Kansas, they're due, and John Calipari's a bit of an ass. --Mike
