  2. Younger Than Yesterday is my favorite as well, their cover of My Back Pages is one of my favorite songs ever. Sweetheart of the Rodeo was huge in my development as a music listener, it really got me interested in country-rock, which lead me to Wilco, ultimately. Notorious Byrd Brothers and 5D are a close tie for third, and Untitled is a great record. Clarence White is one of my favorite guitar players. --Mike
  3. Some thoughts on this thread... 1.) I wonder if there was an internet back in 1970, Rolling Stones fans would have made a 15 page thread about John Lennon's "I roll a stoney" line in Dig a Pony. 2.) I admire Bobbob for being willing to go to the mat for the artists he likes regardless of how hip they are, as much as I hate to admit there's nothing that really makes The Velvet Underground better than Van Halen other than personal preference. I prefer the Velvets catalog (no Squeeze doesn't count...) to almost anything else in music, but that's just me. I prefer The Royal Tennenbaums to Col
  4. Back in the mid-nineties when I first started really caring about sports, WVU's m.o. was building huge first half leads against great teams like Camby's UMass, Iverson's Georgetown, Kerry Kittles and Nova, Artest and St. John's, and blowing it in the second half. We made the tournament once in the nineties, and ironically enough sent Bob Huggins home in the second round on a buzzer beating three-pointer by Jarrod West (they lost to Utah in the Sweet Sixteen). In the beginning of the 00's, the program was really struggling. They didn't even play home games in Morgantown one year, as asbestos
  5. That Arizona game was a little closer than the final score indicated, but I thought WVU played pretty well, particularly in the second half. Duke's certainly not going to sleep on us after that Belmont game, it should be interesting. --Mike
  6. Here are two previews Handshake Drugs, When the Roses Bloom Again. --Mike
  7. I think you may have seen the Soundstage 2003 show, where they closed with Kicking Television. That aired on PBS. --Mike
  8. I don't hate Michigan by any means (nor do I like tOSU), but my current status as West Virginia citizen requires me to jump for joy over anything that gets into the way of Rich Rodriguez's success, I hope you understand. --Mike
  9. "Tonight I feel like Elvis longing for his long lost twin." Why isn't this song a hit? Anyway I love Mr. Barzelay, I'll have to check his new stuff out. --Mike
  10. Street Success might be the great "lost" song in the Tweedy catalog. He basically used the melody for Kicking Television, I think Street Success is the better song, the lyrics are great. I don't know if we'll ever hear Millionaire again, unless there are Loose Fur demos and outtakes that surface. --Mike
  11. I've always found Aman too be one of the most consistently entertaining borders here, and seriously it's not that difficult to use the search function.... I think Orson hit the nail on the head, Wilco is really starting to sound like a "Super Sounds of the Seventies" compilation, which isn't in and of itself a bad thing, but these songs don't quite have the same resonance as their earlier material did for me. I agree with you on Shake it Off, that's probably my least favorite song in the band's catalog, but I kind of like Leave Me Like You Found Me. It's got a pretty nice arrangement, it
  12. Yeah I really like this EP a lot too. The original Handshake Drugs is really cool, More Like The Moon is one of my favorites of theirs, Magazine is an excellent pop tune. Great stuff all around. --Mike
  13. Were you at the Brooklyn Loose Fur shows in 2002? Were they even more amazing than the boots sound? Did you want to beat up the guy that yelled out Judas? --Mike
  14. Jeff's plays the guitar on it, I assume Leroy's on the organ, though it might be Mike he was with them by this point. --Mike
  15. Yeah, I feel the same way. I can get behind the sentiment, but compared to other Wilco B-sides and even other "break up" songs in the bands canon like Cars Can't Escape or most of Summerteeth it feels pretty light. --Mike
  16. I can see a lot of parallels between it and A Ghost is Born as well, it has definitely has the live feel with intricate parts, and guitar breakdowns. I think Born Again in The USA has a similar feel to Sky Blue Sky, but it's a little more successful as a whole. The last two Loose Fur records have been a pretty good indicator of where Wilco is going thus far. --Mike
  17. Leroy's last shows were the Bridge Concert Benefits in October of 2003, Jay's last show was the fourth of July of 2001 in Chicago, Nels and Pat first shows were at Otto's in Dekalb in May 2004 (though they both played with the band in September 2003 the first night of the Auditorium show on Handshake Drugs). I think Coomer's last show was Thanksgiving of 2000 in Chicago. Glenn's first show was in June of 2001 at the First Avenue in Minneapolis. Not sure about the others, but there's a start for you. --Mike
  18. Yeah I didn't mean to refer to him in the past tense, I'll fix that. --Mike
  19. He is credited with "feedback" on You Are My Face in the linear notes, so I assume he helped construct the short noise fade out at the end. --Mike
  20. I'd give the slight edge to the Buckley version over Cale's, and I really like Leonard's as well. Wonderful song, and I am not saying that just to get "indie cred," Leonard Cohen was a hell of a songwriter.... and still is --Mike
  21. Nice to see Reservations getting some love, and it looks like a great set. I kind of liked the band's two encore system where they'd usually play more introspective slower songs in the first encore leading up to Spiders or even Not For The Season back in 2002/2003, and then in the second encore they'd play the Being There rockers, I'm A Wheel, and The Late Greats. I really like Hummingbird as a closer also. --Mike
  22. Yeah I completely agree. You Are My Face is credited to Tweedy/Cline. --Mike
  23. This video has actually been around for awhile, it was streamed on the band's website leading up to the release of the Kicking Television DVD. Beyond it no footage of the concerts have surfaced. --Mike

    poor places

It's sampled from the Conet Project boxset http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Conet_Project. Wilco actually got sued for not clearing the sample. --Mike
  25. There's one show, I think it's the Summerfest 03 gig, where Mike plays guitar on I Got You. He started appearing with the band in the summer of 02, I believe. At first he just worked the laptop, but by the fall 2002 shows he was adding keyboards and by 2003 he was basically a full fledged member. --Mike
