  1. I made the unfortunate mistake of listening to NPR on the way to work this morning. They were interviewing Diane Ravitch about her book The Death and Life of the Great American School System: How Testing and Choice Are Undermining Education. Scared the crap out of me. I know there are some teachers lurking around here, and perhaps some folks with opinions. Are things really as bad as they sound? Ms. Ravitch pointed out that No Child Left Behind and other "incentives" have resulted in state standardized testing that is incomprehensibly bass-ackwards (a score of 44% is considered "profici
  2. saw Shutter Island tonight. really enjoyed it.
  3. I'm thinking about grabbing the wife and flying standby Saturday from houston to chicago and seeing if we can swing this. who wants to go for pizza?
  4. it's a great idea for a modern sort of newlywed game/hollywood squares kinda show (not in form but style), but the execution is pretty poor. they have the panel give their input, then the douchebag host just makes his own decision. what's the point there? if they had a better host and a bit of a different format I think it would be mildly entertaining. thank cod for parks and recreation, modern family, big bang theory and rules of engagement. finally some decent sitcoms on air.
  5. I was thoroughly disappointed by The Blind Side, but I seem once again to be in the minority.
  6. chronic, progressive and fatal. very sad.
  7. oddly since the show ran over, and the wife only set the DVR to record 15 minutes over, I missed the presentation for director and best movie (as well as Bullock's acceptance--was it any good?). I took Betlmann's advice and got over my Avatar disdain far in advance of the show, in order to avoid having to make repairs to the apartment. to each his own (sucky movie).
  8. I thought Martin and Baldwin were great Clooney was just playing a bit I thought this was one of the better Oscar shows, all in all.
  9. I'll be happy as long as the survivors don't just end up having dinner at a diner, listening to Journey. not that that didn't necessarily work for other shows...
  10. I think it's obvious that this public servant was trying to introduce Christ into a Christless venue, and but for the agents of the state, would have personally administered Christ to the unnamed gentleman in the car.
  11. don't be sorry. I love you just the way you are.
  12. cinema paradiso has long been one of my all-time favorites, and I don't see it mentioned all that much, although I think a lot of posters here enjoyed it.
  13. michael clayton was fantastic good point about 07. I guess I just feel like the overall caliber of the 09 oscar pics is pretty lacking...
  14. cod damn you and your rightness
