  1. Here we go.... from Politico. McCain is bringing this upon himself. Frankly, I think it can be easily argued that McCain and the rest of the Keating 5 did far greater damage to the US than Ayers ever did. $1.2T plus a lot of people's retirements.... very very bad. Yes it's old news; yes McCain wasn't the nexus, but his culpability is not denied.
  2. My husband and I make north of $100K. Here in chicago it never feels like enough.
  3. That for me was the kicker -- I agree that her command of the issues was merely surface, talking points at best. However, when in the last 15 minutes she spoke about what the VP does every day and then just gave lip service to how Dick Cheney had been conducting himself, when Biden finally spoke he just evicerated her. I was watching the C-SPAN split screen and you could see her turning red. The differences between the two answers were stark and frankly scary. Also, can you imagine her as President of the senate? God help us....
  4. Actually, Cleavon Little in Blazing Saddles is more like Obama than Cowboy Troy.
  5. I didn't have to to know that it allowed me to walk into an abortion clinic if I wanted to. One that was clean, safe and best of all, legal.
  6. Yeah Kyle, I just saw that. This illustrated perfectly what Biden's strategy should be tomorrow -- answer the questions as well as he can, engage directly with Palin as little as possible while being a gentleman (but not condescending), and then get the hell out of dodge.
  7. In all fairness, Couric asked which ones she disagreed with. If I were answering, it would be Gore V. Bush (2001) but hey, that's just me.
  8. This is 1000% true. I am sure she will do just fine. Right wing conspiracy theorists will have little/nothing to hang their hats on. I mean, she isn't going to answer the questions (which are heavily scripted I wager) for Palin. Gov Palin will get to do that all by herself.
  9. I came out of the dojo earlier -- it's about 8 blocks from Wrigley -- and walked past the first bar. I didn't need to see the score to know that the cubs were losing. Lots of glum faces. To those that recall, I am not not a cubs fan. I just prefer the Sox (white ones that is).
  10. Would you want to know if Obama read "Muslims Today" or "William Ayers Journal"? Clearly I'm making it up but you can see how what one reads can influence thinking.
  11. QFT QFT x2 Just harken back to the last time you wanted someone to be president -- that clearly hasn't worked out so well. So just be like George Costanza and do the opposite of what you would normally do -- that will be a winner!
  12. "People who don't want it" will be the first in line for it soon enough.
  13. I just keep wondering when some non-finance company like ADM or GE or something will suddenly default on its loans and have its credit rating (and stock price) plummet. The crisis is real -- short term debt that is routinely lent and paid back is basically frozen right now, and not just here, but globally. This is one of the engines that drives our country and allows big and small business to conduct business and do simple things like make payroll. So the relative misconception that this was driven by "wall street fat cats" is largely wrong and worse, paints the problem with a frighteningly br
  14. "Theraputic abortion" is what it is called. At least it was in 1965.
  15. In reading this editorial by Fareed Zakaria, I came across this comment that I think really sums up why McCain is not suited to be POTUS.
  16. just a question.... would you have used the word "males" above if you were talking about men?
  17. I spent the weekend in the company of many people I rarely see; it was my 30th HS reunion. This was the only reason I would have missed the debate Friday. Anyway, when I got to one of the pre-parties on Friday night, I got the news that one of my best friends, John Kauffmann, from that era (and beyond) had passed away about a year ago -- suicide. I looked at the messenger blankly, then started bawling uncontrollably. John was like one of his beloved Labradors -- big and floppy, gorgeous and fun-loving. But he had a dark side that would render him sad and numb from the setbacks that life inev
  18. I didn't meet her in person either (I don't think) but fell in love with her wit and fearless way she lived. RIP Nat.
  19. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is one of my favorite movies of all time. So is The Verdict. So is Butch Cassidy. So is The Hustler. So is Slapshot. Basically, any movie with him in it was made better because he was in it, plus he was in so many great movies (see list above) that became more memorable because of him.
  20. He won't dump palin. It will make him less of a MaverickĀ™ since he would be caving. And if she quits, its more of a "Gee, I guess I can blink!"
  21. The disingeuous injection by McCain into this mess in DC (couched in Country FirstĀ®-speak) and his ever-present flailing about would be laughable, except that he is playing chicken with my kid's future. Fuck him, and I really mean it.
  22. Congratulations -- you win the "ignore" award for the rest of this election cycle. Your comments have added very little to the discourse other than to make generally baseless, wild comments like someone blindfolded and spun trying to hit a pinata. On another note, my 20 stepson has a savings/checking account with WaMu -- fortunately it is protected with one of those stupid "regulation things" (Roosevelt era) that so many people seem to hate. My husband gets to call him tomorrow and talk to him about how/why things are so fucked up.
