  1. Those are sweet hobbies. I'm not trying to down on you or anything, but come on.... you didn't somewhere inside of you want to start something by posting a picture of your new gun, without any attached comment to contextualize exactly how it enhances the general political thread conversation? It seems a little disingenuous to pretend otherwise.
  2. Also, Jim is still totally making music. He has a new album out this week that got reviewed in Pitchfork this morning. I think he talked a lot about being less interested in working on music, and more interested in film in a couple interviews years ago when he moved to Japan. That impression seems to have stuck in everyone's mind. His musical output has been limited, and a bit more obscure than his Drag City hay day.
  3. Notice I wasn't a big enough dork to post a picture of my compound miter saw to try and troll a thread about the political climate. You have a fetish. That's why you're posting pics in a political thread. That's why LouieB responded to you. It's what you wanted. That's why I said it was lame. It's like we're having a conversation about legalizing marijuana, people are comparing risks, benefits etc. Then I post a big picture of a bong and am like "Check out my new bong! Anyone got a problem with that?" Immature.
  4. The performances are up now at www.thedailyshow.com They did the two tunes that have been released so far. Tweedy and Spencer were not along, looked like some of the same band Mavis was performing the You Are Not Alone record with. Coolest part, is they're streaming another single exclusively at the Daily Show sight. It's called "Far Celestial Shore", slightly folkier and less funky than the other stuff we've heard so far. Really pretty.
  5. I'm reaching for an unfair prejudice word for stoners, but I keep laughing them off. You're being stonerist? Stonerphobic? Sober supremacist?
  6. Here's why the NSA business has not kept this thread active: it's non-partisan fascism. The finger pointing doesn't work, it hasn't really even gotten action on the dumb-dumb news. This whole business started under Bush with the Patriot Act (double speak nomenclature) and has continued, and really been extended under Obama. It isn't a democrat vs. republican issue. It's a federal government overreach in the name of safety issue. The fact that everyone is so in shock over what Snowden said shows how naive this country has gotten. Call me a cynic, but my response is "Well yeah.... I'd ki
  7. The trailer had the least "rockin" song she's done in recent memory. This might be the most "rockin'". I am interested in both.
  8. I'm sure if it's anything like the last two it will blow my mind, and make most other people's music seem dumb.
  9. Wait, I mean Funkadelic. Those two get mixed up in my head.
  10. So much Parliament influence on this record from what I've heard (obviously a Parliament song too). But the gnarly fuzz guitar, and grindy bass over spare funky drums on "I like the things about me." Very cool.
  11. It would be good to get some reflection on the AGIB process. The creative process has been well documented. The interesting part for me is how Jeff was doing some of his best writing at the time, and taking new risks on the guitar to great effect, yet was apparently barely functional in the studio due to being at a personal low with migraines, pain killer addictions. How was that for the band? Leroy left right after. And then how was it for Pat and Nels to join up when they were aware of that reputation? And then how was it for Jeff to get way better and have the new guys vote of confide
  12. I see what you've done there, yet they're still not quite the same thing.
  13. Had the GOP not stepped in they would have thrown all of that money at highways, and bridges. Phooey.
  14. Sometimes you just gotta spend some money.
  15. I saw Morgan Freeman on the Daily Show yesterday. It reminded me how much I'd like to sit down and have a drink and chat with the guy. He's brilliant, unassuming, charismatic and funny. I would love to have the guy over for dinner. Who's at your imaginary dinner party?
  16. If they're not finished recording an album in the next month or so, the chances of it coming out this year are slim. I bet we'll see the next one in 2014.
  17. The most fascinating thing about our pointlessly binary political system is the irony that conservatives are supposedly for individual freedoms yet have moved to constrict them when they don't suit their religious superstitions. Liberals in hopes of guaranteeing prosperity for their fellow citizens are more willing to require them to give up some of their income for the purpose of prosperity. Being more or less a liberal it's easier for me to think around the second irony than the first.
  18. Oh, I didn't read the start date. I was gonna say Wilco's next album should be a pretty sweet treat to listen to, and some kind of surprise.
  19. Totally. This place is a good outlet, but I couldn't think in those terms constantly. The idea reminds me of some of my more tedious friends in college.
  20. I'm not sure if a Sunday talk show host is the best battleground for keeping the criticism of journalism substantive. It's kind of like saying someone gave Chucky Cheese a cheap shot, when the real discussion should focus on culinary arts.
  21. I think that was more than a little hyperbolic. To me the most curious part is what was the Justice Department looking for when they dug in to the AP's records? That's the curious part, but it will probably remain a secret since they seem to be worried about keeping intelligence a secret.
  22. Not true. David Foy, March 2, 2006, Karachi. Several Americans, and scores of U.S. hired security guards, and police have died as well in 13 embassy attacks in the last 11 years. Also, while Smith's mother has stated publicly that she thought Obama killed her son (for some political gain I suppose, I thought the story says they were covering it up for damage control), I don't think we can synthesize the rest of their families' opinions. I merely wanted to indicate that some of the media usage was cheap drama for selling ad revenue.
  23. You don't think someone using their loss of life as a political chip would get stale? If I lost someone I loved I would find a Fox frenzy very stale. They have, and will be investigating. That's just proper procedure. Several of these types of attacks happened during the Bush years and no one made much of a story about it.
  24. Yeah, that whole deal has gotten pretty stale. Here's some fresh outrage: http://pitchfork.com/news/50672-catholic-league-disses-david-bowies-the-next-day-video/ Apparently David Bowie can't do what he wants with Christian imagery without infuriating the Catholic league. Apparently they consider calling him "bisexual" a great big dis.
