  1. Blues For Allah is easily my favorite studio LP. It's really unique among GD albums. They went to the studio with no material, no songs written at all, and they were under no economic pressure to deliver the record on a deadline. They took their sweet time and let things develop organically with everybody contributing ideas. The title track is one of the weirdest things they ever done - totally non-commercial. But everything on the record is first-rate: Help>Slip>Frank, Music, Crazy Fingers. And I love Bobby's pastoral interlude Sage & Spirit as well.
  2. OK, I could probably do this all day long, but we'll go with the "first thought, best thought" philosophy for now. It will change a dozen times after this! Duane Allman/Dickey Betts - In Memory of Elizabeth Reed (The Fillmore East version). I could probably just do an all Allmans top 5 with ease. Robert Fripp - Starless (the Red LP). One note, with Wetton's dark, brooding bass work wrapped around it. One of the best examples of tension/release I've ever heard Steve Howe - Siberian Khatru (Yessongs version) - frenetic, unhinged, virtuosic John McLaughlin - On The Way Home To Earth (Vis
  3. Yeah, the setlists from this period are kind of stagnant, but late April '78 finds the band in another good groove. It's not what I would have picked, but wtf? You'll be surprised for seconds on end!
  4. The music of Yes is bigger than the people who are in the band playing it. As much as I mourn Chris' passing (he's a hero up there with Jerry & Lou for me), the philosophy stated in my first sentence should continue. Plus Chris tapped Billy to replace him, and surely that's good enough. Billy will honor the music and make Chris proud I have no doubt.
  5. That post drums (New Potato > Playin > Let It Grow > Help Slip Frank) was thrilling.
  6. I have fond memories of SYF. In the Summer of '81 I had just graduated high school. Me and my buddy (and eventually GD Tour pal) Smokestack Jack rode around in his AMC Hornet that whole Summer, selling and smoking pot and hash oil and damn near the only cassette that we had in the car was SYF. Is is a GREAT GD record? Fuck no. But there are MOMENTS where it hits. The Berry stuff rocks and I LOVE that Phil bomb at the end of Casey.
  7. I've always thought Reckoning is a good place to start, then for some real rock & roll Skullfuck.
  8. Never in my wildest dreams would I have hoped for a set list like Saturday night. I'm still trying to wrap my head around it. When they closed with Viola I just about pissed myself with joy. LOL Sunday was MUCH more song based, and more coherent - still, that first night. WOW.
  9. This is a big one, for me. Squire is one of my favorite Rock musicians ever. I knew it was inevitable when we heard about his illness 2 months ago, but when I read about his passing on Sunday morning the tears flowed. First Garcia, then Lou, now Chris. He's up there near the top for me. RIP, Fish - you were a true original.
  10. Ooooh that could be good. Even if it's things I might have already known/read somewhere it would be nice to have it all collected in one place.
  11. I really need to get both of those books. I've been slackin'.
  12. Thanks for your unwavering dedication in these threads, Aman. SEVEN GD threads so far - I think that means were over 350 pages of talk about the band! I should print em all out and read the thing like a book. God knows what I've said in these pages. LOL
  13. IIRC when I saw The Firm they did some Death Wish II soundtrack stuff, nearly all of the first record, and a couple of covers. No Zeppelin. ED: I remember saying something like, "Well, I paid 15 bucks to see the violin bow".
  14. #1 - grateful dead #2-#30, no particular order" allmans jeff beck black sabbath bowie cream dire straits deep purple bob dylan emerson, lake & palmer genesis hendrix king crimson the mighty zeppelin the pink floyd pretenders lou reed rolling stones roxy music rush santana src traffic srv uncle tupelo the who wilco yes neil young zappa honorable mention: clash, doors, beatles, judas priest, byrds I didn't even get into Jazz, that's a whole 'nother thing.
  15. I saw The Firm in '85. It was good, but not great. I saw Plant in '85 as well. Good, but not great. Saw JPJ open for Crimson in '01. Good, but not great. So I guess I can say I've seen all the surviving members, but there ain't NOTHING close to The Mighty Zeppelin.
  16. Dark Star Sugaree Scarlet Begonias Help > Slip > Frank Althea Supper's Ready The Knife Watcher of the Skies The Musical Box The Chamber of 32 Doors
  17. Hard to argue, although the 7/17 show I attended comes close.
  18. What Lammy said! Cape Cod is a killer. I saw the 6.24.85 Riverbend show - a Top 5 all timer among shows I went to.
  19. Obsession is such a deliciously weird tune. Druggy as hell, without any really overt psychedelic trappings.
  20. That article was strange to me in that the choices fit the artist, somehow. With the exception being Robinson & Renaldo - I would have thought those tunes would have been reversed with those two.
