  1. Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid, directed by Sam Peckinpah. Probably my all-time favorite film. Stars Kris Kristofferson and James Coburn. Lots of Westerns actors in the film, too. Bob Dylan has a bit part that's pretty memorable (and did the soundtrack, too). Come to think of it, the soundtrack/album is underrated, as well. After Hours. Scorsese film that doesn't get a lot of mention. Camera angles, plot, actors/actresses, wit/humor, etc. all excellent. 3 O'Clock High. Another 80s flick that I'll watch every time if stumbled upon while surfing.
  2. Oh shit I forgot about Jay. My bad.
  3. Hmm...I'm not seeing anything in reviews about a guest percussionist last night. It's just been Joe Russo on drums the whole tour, too. What'd you eat last night...?
  4. Should be letting the new guys have more input. Kadlicik, from what I've listened to, needs to be able to breathe outside of the confines of the Garcia role, too.
  5. Yeah, the manager's make the set lists most nights? Kinda odd. Nice set lists, though....
  6. There's another guy on drums? I wasn't aware of that..... The back-up singer chicks, from what I've heard, add a nice flavor to the sound. One chick's name is Sunshine Garcia something-or-other and it's NOT Mountain Girl and Kesey's kid that Jerry helped raise. Weird, eh?
  7. I'm not panning the band, mind you, but have yet to be floored by anything I've heard. Without the drummers (no disrespedt to joe russo, either) I'd just as soon catch a Phil & Friends show, preferably in the original quintet formation with Warren/Herring. I look forward to the shows and I'm sure it'll be a fun night of tunes I love to hear.
  8. Yeah, I've seen DSO, JGB, Phil & Friends, Ratdog, etc. a lot of times and have no expectations whatsoever that it'll compare to GD music. I just want it to be better than what I've heard on the downloads/archives.....
  9. Thanks for the review, blombekr (if that's even your real name). I've liked some of what I've heard on livearchive but still am not completely sold on them. I've heard good things about this tour and how they sound in a live setting so I'll reserve final judgements until after the Denver shows this weekend. Glad you enjoyed it.
  10. I'd imagine the same way all the other artists got the nod; Jann and his small circle decided on it. That's not a wise-ass remark, just an acknowledgement that the "system" is pretty vague and dependent on a handful of folks. I wonder what the process is for deciding on who gets in but I'd imagine it's pretty informal.
  11. Anybody? Somehow I got sucked back into this debacle again this year. Took last year off. They keep saying how strong the competition is. Horseshit. This is the weakest batch of contestants I've ever seen. All this talk about poses, look, wardrobe and such is now out front whereas it used to be a side thing. this show blows. Yet, i continue to watch....
  12. Hey, it was just a nickname. His real name is orca.
  13. I'm sure there are and I'm all for those alternatives over zoos, etc.. But I think a coomon mis-conception is that animals are tracked down and yanked out of their environs and forced into zoos.
  14. Not for nothing, but a lot of the aniamls held in captivity (zoos, aquariums, etc.) come from rescues. I don't know about this particular whale. There's the possiblity (from what I read) that the wahae was playing with the trainer (or at least thought of what it was doing as playing), too. I don't know the song everyone is referring to but the first thing I thought of was that it was too bad that a woman who loved animals to the point of dedicating her life to caring for them was killed by one.
  15. I was curious about this because it seemed like I caught a shitload of them, so I checked DeadBase: It was in the rotation for less than 4 years and the longest gap between times played was 49 shows (between NYE '82 and September of '83). Besides that, it was played quite frequently. Again, never hated the tune but as an encore I'd often start heading to the lot early to beat the slow rush out.....
  16. Never been a big whiskey fan/drinker but dating a gal for the past year who loves Jameson & ginger ale has made me appreciate it a bit. I get crazy on too much of it but it's a nice switch from beer or wine over the course of a night out.
  17. I didn't mind it TOO much in the first set closer spot but didn't care for it as an encore. Kind of a poor man's U.S. Blues. Only tune ever to be removed from the repertoire by fan request. Pretty funny, that.
  18. Ditto. There are a lot of tunes I wish were longer just because they're too short. "The Wheel" by the GD comes nto mind as do several Clash tunes. "The Core" by Clapton comes to mind on the long tunes being longer point. That song could never end and I'd listen. In terms of "pointless jamfests": I'll never understand this. If a musician has extended/free-form playing in a tune then that's not pointless but rather the intent. I understand it's not for everybody but saying it doesn't serve a purpose kind of goes disagrees with the intent of the musician, imo.
  19. I was at the Oxford shows and it was a fantastic time. I did that summer tour and the scene was fine. There were large crowds but everything was still pretty mellow. The shows were very solid there. There's some nice banter from Phil in response to "let Phil sing" chants. Garcia chimed in too about calling for for crew to sing (Kidd, Steve, etc.) There was a dude circling over the audience in a paraglider during Birdsong, too. He landed in the crowd. Great memories of those 2-3 days there.
  20. Doubt it. Stu Allen (of JGB) takes over starting in CO this spring.....
  21. Yeah, not to end the set, though.... it was Richfield, Oh, though. Bobby left stage after He's Gone right before drums ue to equiptnent issues, apparently.... http://www.dead.net/show/march-21-1994 1994 was, overall, a pretty crappy year for GD music, imo.
  22. I listened to two versions on the way to work today! I've always been a big Brent fan and "Blow Away" was one of my favorites. There's a really nice version on Dozin' at the Knick. A great one from Cincinnati '88, too. I always got the vibe that Weir wasn't that into it (or most of Brent's tunes, for that matter), but the drummers and Garcia almost always wailed on it, as did Brent, of course. the ending always left room for some vocal improv, too. Great tune, imo.
  23. Why'd he leave the stage? Must've been equiptment trouble? Never heard of him laeaving the stage 10 min. before the end of the set....
  24. Very solid show. Nice versions of Blow Away, Scarlet->Fire, Iko, Lovelight. Archives: http://www.archive.org/details/gd1989-07-07.senn421.zaleski.89616.sbeok.flac16
